Re: Legacy Question
I'm not sure, but I'd guess they were making them for Summer NAMM. I have a rare one, very early, one with the serial number on the bridge plate; I've never taken the neck off to date it. I have another that has 7/93 in Sharpie in the pickup route.
What's the earliest one you've found in the Registry?

early December 1991. The earliest one I can find in our G&L Registry is a Black one with DEC 19, 1991
neck date and DEC 31, 1991 body date.
Why do you ask?

According to Greg Gagliano's G&L website: [Quoted from http://www.ggjaguar.com/legacy.htm]Boogie Bill wrote:I'm not sure, but I'd guess they were making them for Summer NAMM. Bill, this would indicate you have a rare Legacy.G&L routinely used bridge serial numbers from 1980-82, but then switched to stamping the
serial numbers on neckplates from 1983 to 1997. In early 1993, G&L had run out of neck plates with
serial numbers and, in order to keep production moving, used some leftover bridges from the early
1980s. According to G&L, less than 40 guitars left the factory with these old bridges.

Re: Legacy Question
I know how rare it is, and not only that, it's a special guitar--one of my favorites of all my guitars. It is the only G&L I've bought new. And after I bought this Legacy, I not only wanted more G&Ls, but I stopped missing my old 1960 Strat that I had to sell after my divorce in 1990. I found the Legacy a couple of years later, and the rest is history, as they say.
To me the finish looks like NCL lacquer, even though I know it probably isn't. The finish, whatever it is, is very thin. It's a 3CSB on alder; very light, lively, and resonant--and I'm sure that the thin finish is a contributing factor to the tone. And, it has one of the "stupid slim" necks on it. Not so slim as to make it unplayable, but it very fast and comfortable. I named it "Judy" for my girlfriend at the time. Don't ask. But the guitar won out over the girl!

Re: Legacy Question
I also have come across a rare early Legacy. The neck is stamped June 23 1992 and has NAMM, Leo and Dale written on the inside of the neck. The serial number on the bridge is G000552 and it is a prototype 1 of 2 made with Malcolm McLamore's first attempt of a green swirl metallic paint job that is also on the pickups, pick guard and headstock. It doesn't say legacy but has Series II on the headstock. It also has the locking patent pending vib bridge. I have heard that necks could have been made and possibly hung up just waiting to get matched up to a body so I hope that this neck was influenced by Leo Fender before passing. If anyone has any more information about this guitar or who it may have been made for please feel free to let me know. Thank you.
If it makes you happy, play it!

Until I saw this post (and Craig's) I was wondering about this Legacy that just sold, I could make outBoogie Bill wrote:I'm not sure, but I'd guess they were making them for Summer NAMM. what seemed like G010xxx (on the bridge) or similar , but that didn't make sense...until now. This must be one of the 40 or so without a numbered neck plate
Red Legacy on ebay
I was tempted to bid, happy to see it went for a little more than some other Legacy's that have been up lately.
