NGD - Legacy Edition

Ok. Things have been so crazy here that I've had this guitar for more than a week, went several days with the package in my house without opening it, and then did not have the chance to play it until a couple of days ago.

By way of explanation, I've missed having a Legacy around since selling mine to another member a couple of years back to fund a different G&L purchase. I had been watching this one on the Bay, and after having a few beers one night a couple of weeks ago, made a "best offer" that I was rather shocked when accepted.
I now have my Hamer Special in the Marketplace, as per the terms of an agreement I have with my wife.

The color of this guitar is so "not me" in a way, but in the end, persuaded me somehow to pull the trigger. I can't really explain it. This guitar is light, resonant and everything I hoped it would be.

Here's a slideshow of photos my wife took when me, my neighbor (who plays [Allman Bros.]) and my oldest kid finally got into that box last Saturday.

Great slideshow Ed. Love the look of anticipation on the faces as the case is about to be opened, and the "I'm not sure about the colour" look on your faces in the next photo! Personally, I think it looks fantastic. It may be a bit bold for some people, but its bold in the best way - unashamedly! Enjoy that beauty

Thanks Jamie! My neighbor really didn't like the color. My kid was actually shocked that I would buy such a thing - but now he wants to try it out. I think he's good with it. Me, just looking at it makes me happy. -ed

How could you not love Bright Screaming Yellow? Besides - the next wonderful DC power outage we have, you can light your house with it!

Does this one have a painted neck?

great pics, and better to pick peanuts and peanut remnants out of grass than carpet. nice color too and matches really well with the stark light maple board. since my guitar buying days are over i have to live vicariously through other members purchases. this one looks like a keeper!

An Iranian friend once told me a story that in Farsi they don't have a term for 'neon colors': the very bright, almost fluorescent kind. So the term they use for that translates to 'screaming color'. Judging from the kid's reaction that term might apply here ...

Holy smo0kes, I just became aware of this post. I have been gigging way too much. Ed, this is a killer, I love it. Sensational with the maple neck. It's amazing how a few beers can help a guy make a good decision sometimes. That is what nice about the bay, It never closes. I bet the better half will soften on the Hamer. Have the son play it and have him tell her he really likes it! I have missed a lot of good stuff on the forum as I have been gone too much for a retired guy, sometimes tired! I may have a few cold ones tonight on Yellow Fever!!!!

Thanks Darwin. I was able to get a good deal because it was a store "demo" - whatever that means. There's not a mark on it and it came as new with warranty.

Maybe Ginny could call my wife on the Hamer? Actually, a deal is a deal, and I think I may now have one too many guitars- if such a thing is even possible (at my skill level, it probably is). Actually, my boy is keen on "our" SC-2, so just one more reason whey THAT one isn't going anywhere, lol.

I think I'll have one or three with you this evening, Darwin. I'm just not going anywhere near eBay. I will be watching my Nationals hosting the Atlanta braves. Should be a great series! -ed

Then stop calling them guitars, and start calling them art!!! My wife has asked me why none of mine are hanging on the walls. I need to follow Darwin's lead and set a precedent that we both can enjoy them.

I've never wanted Yellow Fever before (the color or the infection), but your new one has me thinking. I have seen a couple of used JB-2s in Yellow Fever that haven't moved for a couple of months. I want the next bass to have a 1.5" nut, which means an ASAT, JB, or L-1500. Maybe I need to look at them again.

One of my first G&Ls was a white Skyhawk that had softened to a light creamy yellow. My selling point to my wife (I think Jay Wright calls these "Creative Responses to Acquisition Protests", or "CRAPs") was that it was a really pretty color and I was sure she would enjoy looking at it. In retrospect, it's pretty clear why that CRAP failed so miserably. We were coming up on our 20th anniversary, so I should have known better by then. At least I didn't try giving it to her as an anniversary present!

I've had some success with pointing out how good of a value some are, and how they will probably increase in value over time. Either she buys this CRAP, or she's just given up on fighting it. Anyway, she was actually OK with me buying the Broadcaster that just went up on Guitar Center's site (if another G&LDPer hadn't beaten me to it!

Hey Ken -

Those early white ones do age to a nice creamy color (though this photo of my SCs does not do it justice).

But my wife is a CPA and has exhibited some inclination for the investment/appreciation angle. But I think my Hamer is slipping away since I got a mulligan about a year ago in the context of a bass amp acquisition that was technically a violation of applicable law. - ed

My Skyhawk has one of the prettiest finishes I've ever seen, although it's nothing like it was 25 years ago. The Interceptor Bass somehow ended up with different shades of orangeness in the white finish as it faded. It doesn't detract from the appearance at all, but I do wonder why it ended up looking that way. I will try to get some good photos of it. I was planning to post another "birthday porn" thread when it turns 28 next week.

Really, I don't celebrate my guitars' birthdays. I just noticed this cluster when I was updating the registry a few weeks ago and thought it would be a good excuse to put up some pictures. It's not like I put them around a table with cake and ice cream when everybody else is in bed...

Thanks Scott, Lefty. I don't think I've ever let color so influence a guitar purchase. But I have no regrets at all. This guitar was built with great care and precision, and it just sings. Also, it's on the lighter side of medium weight, which is something that I didn't care much about when I was younger, but is something that matters a bit more to me each passing day.... - ed

I've got a '74 Dodge Challenger that is this color- Yellow Blaze they call it. I'd've gone black pg and covers with such a bright yellow, but hey personal taste is just that.

Regarding black trim, that did cross my mind, but I really like it the way it is now. Maybe if they made a black/yellow/black pickguard. Hmmmm.... - ed

I'm not much of a photo chopper either. Just be thankful you aren't a Cubs fan, they were swept by the Milwaukee this week.
