my wife is taking up bass and while im fairly savvy on the ins and outs of G&L guitars but i am a babe in the woods when it comes to basses .i am looking at an ASAT bass that has had EMGs installed and if i get it for her i would want to take it back to stock . im wondering if the cavities would have had to have been modified to fit the EMGs . on most guitars i would not consider this an issue but a few years ago i bought an F-100 that had normal buckers in it and that poor thing had been butchered to fit them .
thanks for any knowledge you can throw my way!

I'm not sure about the EMGs, but you may want to try asking over at Basses by Leo. They are very into wiring mods and hardware questions over there.
G&L did use EMGs on basses at a couple of points I believe. They were definitely used on some stock guitars. Could these have been a special order, employee build or a one-off from the factory?

from the pic it looks like there are gaps around the pups so im guessing its not a factory job, but i could be wrong. im decent at repairs so even if i had to fill some routes in the cavities id get by but im thinking im already on the verge of overpaying but our anniversary is rapidly approaching lol

JT,
Those gaps look about right for the large MFD humbuckers that would have come on the bass originally. They are still being used after 32 years, so you can purchase replacements directly from G&L through their website.
What year is this bass? The chrome bridge places it any time after the mid-80s. That transparent blue finish looks sweet. Now I'm one step closer to deciding on that for my '82 L-1000 restoration project!

Re: L-2000 / ASAT bass pickup mod question
received the bass and its in pretty great condition. putting the tribby electronics in it ( currently at the shop, a little too complicated for a hack such as myself) i put the EMGs in the tribute and worked out a trade with my buddy.
All and all got a sweet 90's asat ( after complicated electronics swap and trade )for what seems to be a couple hundred under the going rate. happy wife, happy anniversary, all is good and right in the world.
