G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
Today G&L announced the new ASAT Classic Alnico model and a special
100-instrument production of ASAT Classic Alnico Launch Edition guitars.
On July 3rd G&L dealers were sent an email detailing the ASAT Classic Alnico model
and the Commemorative Launch Edition. Here is the text and photos of that announcement:
Announcing the New G&L Fullerton
ASAT Classic Alnico
While the G&L ASAT® Classic is Leo’s final word on the traditional single-cutaway bolt-on axe
with its Magnetic Field Design single-coil pickups, the new ASAT Classic Alnico has arrived to
blend latter-day-Leo with uncompromising Alnico tone. Framed in a classic boxed-steel bridge,
the single-coil Alnico V bridge pickup created by Leo Fender† and specced by Paul Gagon belts
out meaty twang that’ll stop you in your tracks, while individual brass saddles Leo upgraded for
the ASAT Classic offer modern levels of intonation refinement. Flip to the Alnico V neck pickup
and you’ll discover Gagon’s spec offers a fuller tone that leaves those anemic old pickups in the
dust. What’s more, the two pickups pair beautifully for an exceptionally sweet, jangly tone bursting
with harmonics.
These Alnico wonders aren’t just another flavor-of-the-week, having been carefully refined by Gagon
for personal guitars since the late 1970s. About 30 years ago, Gagon was an R&D engineer at another
company when he was tasked with finding out what was so special about the early bolt-on guitars
many players raved about. Gagon tirelessly analyzed many examples of what were considered “holy grail”
guitars, spending time out on the shop floor talking to builders still working in the pickup department
since the ‘50s, all on a quest to discover where the real mojo was – and wasn’t. What he learned from
the builders matched his own engineering analysis. You see, back in the day, the actual spec of pickups
coming that down that old production line varied considerably. Moreover, that nagging imbalance between
bridge and neck pickup was something he longed to improve on, and today, Gagon’s preferred pairing of
Alnico V pickups has arrived to delight the ears of the discerning guitarists.
Like the G&L Legacy, the new ASAT Classic Alnico combines best-of Alnico tone with modern Leo touches
for a brilliant blend of vintage and contemporary. Customers with a soft spot for Alnico tone will be thrilled
to experience what three decades of passionate development have accomplished.
Commemorative Launch Edition
To commemorate the initial production of these Alnico pickups, G&L has commissioned a special
100-instrument production of ASAT Classic Alnico Launch Edition guitars. The Launch Edition features
a Western Sugar Pine body coated in a gorgeous new Autumn Burst finish developed by veteran G&L
painter, Malcolm McLamore. The combination of a Western Sugar Pine body and Alnico magnet pickups
recalls early prototype instruments created by Leo Fender, yet the Launch Edition isn’t a time-warp
instrument: this is a thoughtful remix that blends the best of old-school Leo with 21st century G&L
quality and playability including Plek fret processing.
Two-piece Western Sugar Pine body
Special "Autumn Burst" body finish
G&L #1-spec Hard Rock Maple Neck with Rosewood Fingerboard
Light Tint Gloss neck finish
Gagon-spec Alnico V pickups
3-ply Black/White/Black pickguard
Custom-fit G&G Deluxe Tolex case
Limited to 100 instruments

Not for the ASAT Classic Alnico Launch Edition. G&L has done some past Sugar Pine body instruments on a veryblargfromouterspace wrote:Nice. Any chance the sugar pine body will be available in other colours?
limited run in other models and finish colors. There are a number of them in the G&L prototypes which are up for sale. You might
contact the dealers who have those for sale and ask if they can special order one for you. It's certainly worth a try.

Re: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
Hi Guys,
I have just taken delivery of an ASAT Classic Alnico. It is Blonde (ash) with a Rosewood fretboard. The above tone description is very accurate. The neck pickup is very usable and the in-between setting is really really good! The bridge pickup is very full and bright. The sweep of the tone control is just like the regular ASAT Classic's. Lots of variation throughout it's range.

Do you have enough experience with Fender Teles and /or other aftermarket Tele type pickups to be able to make any comparisons?
Also we need some photos.................

Re: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
ordered a new Butterscotch ash one the other day, could not resist a good price I found for one. I am excited about it, as overall I still prefer alnico pups to MFDs. What do people generally think about this new guitar? Are you excited about it? OR do you think G&L is "selling out" the ASAT by catering to the more traditional crowd?

IMO, definitely not selling out. Expanding the product line to appeal to more players is a good thing.johnnyqb wrote:ordered a new Butterscotch ash one the other day, could not resist a good price I found for one. Also, making use of Paul Gagon's expertise is a big plus, too.
Just my $0.02.

I'm excited about it too and curious how these G&L Alnico pups compare to the MFD's. Of course first I have to find me one ....
The one thing I'm a bit disappointed about is that although it is stated that only 100 of the Launch Editions will be produced there is no indication in the form of a CCD logo and/or '# of 100' on the back of the headstock. At least I cannot find it when I look at a listing on eBay I'm following. Is it on the spec sheet? Does it come with a Silver COA? How would people know they have a relatively rare guitar?

Re: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
As a separate but related subject I finally realized something when I measured the DC impedance of my pups on the 'Port&Chocolate' Bluesboy prototype. I measured 8.8kΩ for the bridge pup which doesn't jibe at all with the typical 5.6-5.8kΩ for my post-'93 ASAT Classics. And then I realized I was looking at an Alnico pup with non-staggered pole pieces (see 4th picture from top) . The G&L® Guitar Prototype page lists a MFD bridge pup whereas the Spec Sheet just states that it has a Seymour Duncan pup; no type or anything. And I cannot really find a good match with any of the SD Tele pups listed on their website. It is not a APTL-3JD as in the ASAT JD-5 because that one has staggered pole pieces. The best match I can find is their STK-T3B pup in split mode which seems somewhat whacky. Was this some one of SD pups they were testing for the Alnico series? Something Paul was playing around with? Questions, questions, questions ...

Hi Jos, this isn't being treated as Custom Creations, so there's no special sauce going on with certificates and the like, and it's priced accordingly. We just thought it'd be a fun way to kick off the Classic Alnico with this Limited Edition. It'll be noted as the Launch Edition on the build certificate of course.yowhatsshakin wrote:I'm excited about it too and curious how these G&L Alnico pups compare to the MFD's. I was starting to respond that the bridge pup on that BB with the pine body and roasted neck is a stock MFD. Then looked at the pics. Oh, man, I was looking right at the pics being uploaded and the listing and didn't realize the bridge pup had been swapped to an Alnico. Last I remembered it was an MFD in that guitar, so it seems it had one more go round in R&D land before it left. I am really sorry about that! I'd be happy to send you an MFD bridge pickup for it if you'd like, or maybe you'd like to keep it as it is and we update the listing on the site to include the Alnico pickup and a blurb about it being swapped in? I can find out what was up with that and add it to the story. It would be great if you can have a look under the pickup and tell me what you see, and if nothing's there, send me a pic. I'd like to confirm its an SD and not one we wound. Just let me know what you'd like to do and I'll take care of it.
BTW, Paul wasn't looking at Seymour's pickups when he specced the G&L Alnicos, he was doing his own thing. Nothing but love, respect and admiration for Seymour, though. We could have bought his pickups and made great guitars, but we wanted this to be a G&L thing using the talent we have here. After all, these are Leo pickups, so we should be building them in his shop.

Re: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
Dave,
Your responses are highly appreciated. I understand the rationale behind the Launch Edition and the pricing is very competitive indeed. And a beautiful guitar to look at.
Let me take a look under the covers of 'Port & Chocolate' this weekend first before I let you know what how to proceed. Sonically, there is nothing wrong with the pup so that is not the issue. I will post some pics of what' sunder the hood when I get them. Little early to change the strings but a small sacrifice to make to learn something special. And the picture on the webpage is what I have; you can see there are no height screws shown so for sure it is not an MFD.
Oh, and I would be very interested in what you can find out on your end on that last round of R&D. As I wrote, the spec sheet just states 'Seymour Duncan' as the entry for the bridge pickup.
Talk to you later,
- Jos

Re: G&L announces the new ASAT Classic Alnico ...
My ultimate G&L ASAT dreams have been realized, upon taking delivery of my brand new Butterscotch ASAT Classic Alnico (just like in picture in the announcement). Now G&L, I know first impressions are important, but still! I have never owned such a beautiful ASAT, and I have owned a couple of sweet butterscotch ones before. But 6 pounds 13 ounces?? Really? This is not a semi-hollow folks, just simply the most resonant, gorgeous piece of ash I have owned. The vintage tint seems somehow less swanky than the so-called "gun-oil" tint; and less swank if usually a good thing in my book.
Out of the box, this ASAT was set-up to play, sweet action, beautiful feel and tone (the Sperzel tuners look so sweet with the butterscotch and tinted neck). So that I come across as in-touch with reality, I will say that I am not pleased that the saddle height screws are sticking up out of the saddles a bit. While many of you do not care about this, I have that slight laziness of right hand that has me resting my hand right on those saddles, and feeling those screws dig into the base of the hand along the pinky is a sensation I would much rather not feel. Generally, if I play a guitar in a store and those saddle screws are sticking up, it is bue-bye to that one. Some of you would say, if that is all that is wrong with the guitar, that is an easy fix; I would say in response, that it is even easier to just buy a different guitar instead that has all those screws hidden in their recesses.
Then I plugged in the guitar. OHMIGAHD. Damn, folks, these alnico pups in this guitar are a game changer. This baby sounds like a dream. Bridge, middle, neck, YIKES! You feel and hear the wood, the depths, those alnico tones, and their 3D vibe. Oh, and they work so beautifully with the tone control (so much better than my Am Std Tele--it really is not even funny to compare them. I am stunned). This guitar almost immediately started writing songs for me, if you know what I mean. The tones just transport you to new places, places I have always dreamed about, but never quite achieved.
It is that good folks. A game-changer. Here is a feeble little clip. I started with bridge (then turned the tone down about half for a few secs on bridge), then middle, then neck, then I think I went back down. No effects, straight into my Richter. I just played this guitar for about 40 minutes, and I feel like I had ten shots of espresso. That is how exciting this monster is.

Here is another clip, to show some of the tones of the new pups. I played a little over a loop. To say my playing and the quality of these tapes do not do justice to this guitar and these pups is an understatement, but I figured some of you would rather hear something from these new pups rather than nothing.

At last!!!! I've always loved my Asat, but not the mfd's. I always thought she deserves alnicos!!
I could gas for a butterscotch...
Now I'm VERY happy with bare knuckle flat 50s and a Rutters bridge.
It's my DREAM GUITAR, really!!!

The Asat NEEDS alnicos IMHO

unbelievable vintage tones from this lightweight ash ASAT w/alnico pups. It can't help but remind me of the Fender 52 RI, as it has a similar feel--there is no question though that these pickups are more expressive and toneful than the original vintage pups Fender uses in those.

is this dealer a bit confused? This finish does not have the pine body does it? Also they believe the neck pick up too big for the lipstick tube??

Yes they are a bit confused. The body is indeed pine but the pups look like MFD's because they seem to show hex heads instead of the flat pole pieces on an Alnico. So this should be a pine ASAT Classic. Funny the trouble cut and paste gets you in ...skinnygav wrote:is this dealer a bit confused? This finish does not have the pine body does it? Jos is very observant and I agree. The pickups on mine look like a Fender Tele, chrome cover on the neck and flat poles on the bridge, much different from the MFD,s
