MYSTERY ASAT !!!!

Post by altwalt »

Hi there G&L fans! I recently aquired a 1988 (or so I was told) G&L ASAT. It is like none I could ever find online as it has a WOODEN PICKGUARD & 3 COIL SPLIT PICKUPS with 3 SEPARATE SWITCHES TO CONTROL EACH! I have a picture of it that shows up in the " G&L PORN site" under Walter Schmidt. PLEASE if anyone out there knows ANYTHING about this particular model, please let me know! I,m curious if it came from the factory like this or did someone modify it? It looks like a factory job as it is done beautifully! I have never seen this pickup configuration or a wooden pickguard! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, let me know! Thank you, Walter

Hi Walter,

Here is your pic:

Second, I have never seen a pickup configuration like that! Do you have any idea what these pickups are, i.e. have you ever looked under the cover?

At first glance the look like a SD '59 in the the neck and a JB4 (or similar models), but the middle pup got me stumped. Not that I haven't seen rail buckers but these fins seems to be particularly beefy and a quick search through SD and Bill Lawrence offerings did not provide a match. It is clear that this is an after market mod and tastefully done.

Not an X2N. Looks like a mid/late-'80s ESP pickup (probably made by Gotoh).

Hi there! Thanks for all the replies out there. Well I KNOW the middle pickup is a SEYMOUR DUNCAN as it is clearly marked SD. I was more interested in knowing if the wooden pickguard is G&L CUSTOM SHOP or did someone make this in their shop (as in aftermarket). Regardless.this thing is a TONEMASTER!!!. So many variations to choose. Anyone out there care to guess its value? It is my 1st G&L and I think it is here to stay! GREAT GUITAR! Thanks again, Walter

The pickguard, pickups, control plate and wiring are not stock. The body is from an ASAT Signature model., but I don't know about the neck since there is
no picture of the headstock. Can you post one?

It is not from G&L Custom Creations. It's either done aftermarket or possibly an employee built (one-off).

You noted that the three toggle switches are for splitting the coils, so that would mean that all three pickups are always on. Is this correct?

Hi there, Thanks again for the response! The neck actually DOES say ASAT on it,plus the guy I bought it from SWEARS it came from the factory this way-but..... As far as the switches go : When in the UP position they are all single coil-in the DOWN position they are all Humbucker. In the MIDDLE position they are OFF. Thats what I really dig about this guitar: So many tone variations. I,ve actually thought about building something along these lines but hey; this walked in my door already to go! Thanks again to all of you who took the time to answer my pleas! Walter

Interesting. If that middle pickup is definitely a Duncan then it is a custom shop model. The only double blade humbucker they have in production is the Dimebucker and that is not one of those. That could be a Nokie Edwards model from the custom shop.

To KILLERBURST: Hey thanks for that bit of info! After researching and comparing pics with my guitar I was able to determine you are dead-on correct! It IS a NOKIE EDWARDS blade pickup. Thank you so much! I am still not for sure if this is a CUSTOM-SHOP model or someone 'modded' it. Anyone else out there have an opinion? Either way, this thing is killer! Thanks again to all! Walter.

To clarify, when I wrote "custom shop" I was referring to the pickup alone as coming from Seymour Duncan's custom shop (as opposed to a regular production model pickup), not G&L. Clearly your guitar was modded after it left the factory.
