Hello, folks. Newbie introduction, and a question

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Hello, folks. Newbie introduction, and a question

Post by Its_Him_Again »

Newbie to the forum, but long time G&L lover.

My dad bought a Skyhawk in the late '80s. Custom ordered in metallic purple.

I also have a '96 L-2000 bass. It's a fretless with a clear finish. Kind of ugly, and I don't play fretless any more, but it was my first bass and I plan to always have it. I got it used for the very good price of $400 with a case in late 1997.

Most recently, I have purchased a Legacy Rustic. It is black with a single-ply white guard and an all maple neck.

My question is about the Rustic. Is it common to find them in colors other than LPB or blonde? I've not seen another in anything but one of those two colors. I am wondering how many were made in colors other than LPB or blonde.

Thanks.

P.S. Here is the guitar. I am planning on undoing the relic work to some degree. Gonna get some nitro paint and fill in the chips, then buff the guitar out. Also gonna try to polish the hardware and see what happens, or possibly just replace it with used non-Rustic hardware. I bought it because of the nitro finish, not because of the relic work. I've always thought G&Ls were great, but the plastic-like finishes have always turned me off over the years. Otherwise I would have owned many G&Ls. I just cannot get comfortable with a plastic finish, despite the good quality of the paint work on G&Ls.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

Nice looking guitar :happy0065: Black is always classy. I think you don't know anything less than I do. The website indeed only lists Blonde and Lake Placid Blue as colors and the Registry is of no help here since your Black Relic is the only one registered! Beyond Butterscotch Blonde, the Asat Classic Rustic has Fullerton Red as one of its offered colors and I think all would agree that this color would not be misplaced on a Legacy. The single registered ASAT Classic 'Bluesboy' Rustic is 2-tone Sunburst. Since this model is not listed on the G&L website it is clear that the site is lagging behind. Good to know other colors are available for the Rustic model. But for an 'exact' answer I guess webmaster Craig has to contact some people at the factory ;)

Welcome!

Based upon the January 1, 2012 Dealer Price List, there are currently
seven Rustic finishes:

Two-tone Sunburst Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Three-tone Sunburst Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Black Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Blonde Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Butterscotch Blonde Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Fullerton Red Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Lake Placid Blue Nitrocellulose Lacquer

For Jos: the G&L Registry does have them listed in the Color Menu list, near the bottom of the list.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response.

Since I posted, another black one just like mine has turned up on E-Bay. And by looking at the ASAT, Legacy, and L-2000 Rustics on the G&L Website, there are examples of five of those finishes. The two-tone burst and black are not pictured. (Obviously I know what the black looks like.)

I'm still very curious about production numbers of Rustics in general, and specifically of Legacy Rustics in black. It is one of the best guitars I've ever played, and I wouldn't mind getting a two-tone burst with a one-piece neck and a white single-ply guard as well. Does G&L keep this information?

Thanks.

I wouldn't undo the relicing at all on that guitar. I'd give it a going over with the Virtuoso Cleaner and Polish, perhaps--and then I would just play the heck out of it!!!
