The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

new user with question on a purchase

Post by jfang »

Good morning everyone! My name is Joe and I'm debating selling my two electrics(Agile LP copy & 02 MIM tele) and go for a G&L ASAT.

The one I found on craigslist is said to be a 97-98 model with a serial # of CLF13384

here are some pics.

Were all ASAT Classics in the late 90s made in USA?

Only USA-manufactured G&Ls have serial number that starts with an alphabet, e.g. G, CF, CLF, etc. The imports (Tribute lines) have serial numbers that are numbers only.

Nice looking blond finish on this one.

Yes, that is a sweet looking USA model. It should be noted that according to the G&L Registry that guitar has non-stock Seymour Duncan pups and pics confirm that they do not look like the stock mfd's. Personally, I would prefer the stock ones.

that is usa, but i'd take the stock pups as well. depends on the price. for 500-600 it would be ok.

As others have already mentioned it is USA built. For details on built location of G&L instruments, see: Serial number significance.

BTW, no one mentioned the previous owner (Jim Campilongo) name stenciled on case. IMO he is an excellent
player. Checkout any of his early albums or his work with Nora Jones and the Little Willies. I remember him
posting on the G&LDP inquiring about the ASAT Classic and whether or not aftermarket pickups would drop in.
Looks like he did get one and modified it to his liking.

Hope this helps.

Oh, wow. Jim Campilongo. I used to see him play all the time in SF before he moved out to NYC like all the other Bay Area jazz musicians. Monster player. He's mostly known for playing top-loading teles now.

That alone would be enough for me to buy it. Jim is one of the best, most original guitar players I've ever heard. The first Little WIllies album is my favourite

Blarg, on your recommendation alone, I think I need to check out this album and player.

btw, this Little Willie has nothing to do with The Sweet, does it? That one just won't go home. Ha! - ed

Congratulations! BTW, that serial number puts it a year or two later than it was advertised as. "CLF" serial numbers began around the beginning of '99. I'd guess it's from '99 or '00 by the number.

Welcome and congrats, great provenance on your ASAT. Campilongo's signature Fender Tele looks much the same.
