Wound some nice Alnico pickups for this ASAT Classic. As much as i love the MFDs,
these do sound great and are a different flavor. Think we should offer Classics with
Alnico p'pups? - Dave
So, what do you think -- should G&L offer G&L Alnico pickups as an option for the ASAT Classic?
On a recent thread I voiced my support for just this very thing. I would love to hear some sound bites.
From a marketing standpoint it's hard to say how well received this would be from the traditional Tele buying public--for some of the reasons voiced above by Lucifer, although the same arguments could be used against the Legacy.
If I were in the market for a Tele, I would bet this would kick an American Fender Tele's ass for significantly less $$$.
Does G&L need to do it? No. Would it be desirable to do it? I'm not entirely sure honestly. But would it be fun to out-Telecaster any and all Fender versions by introducing a model with nitro finish and Alnico pups. Yeah, you betcha! I would like to see it happen just to observe how the markets and dealers (GC are you listening?) react. Could they still sell you a (Custom Shop) Fender with a straight face while right next to it is a better built, and hopefully better sounding (less icepick anyone?) G&L ASAT Alnico Classic for what will more than likely be a lower price but it doesn't say Fender on the headstock? To drive up the quality : price ration at Fender, competition is good certainly when it is affecting their stalwart model.
And I do know this: the ASAT HB has an Alnico neck pup and sounds great (although that is in a hog body). And going head to head with Fender would be fine as long as G&L does not lose sight of Leo's vision to build the best guitars possible. In that sense I rather would like to see G&L out-Leo FMIC instead of out-Telecaster.
I think it's a great idea. G&L was ready to put alnico's in a few signature models, so why not make them available for the ASAT? In fact, if G&L wants to wind a set of alnico magnet large MFD's, I'll give them a go in my ACSH!

Yep. We've talked about them before and the few options available from Rio Grande. If G&L wanted to make a set, I'd be interested in checking them out, too!
