G&L Legacy Special
Well Thats 2!!!
Got my new used LS today nice!! real nice !
The prev owner wrapped some strings wrong (it looks to me ) my comanche has no wraps ,after playing Leg for a while seems to go way outta tune then noticed the wraps on headstock pins, other than 1 little knick on body by imput. I like the way it feels and plays, going to get set-up next week!
tobacco burst ,U.S.A. on headstock and gtrs by Leo unlike my comanche.
Will post pics..and register(I know Craig) If you cant see it it"s not there!
Steve....ps wish pics were easier to post on this site!

Congrats Steve! Looking forward to the pics. When you say the string are wound wrong, does the LS have locking tuners and the strings were wound like the machines aren't locking?

I also noticed that on my comanche the tremelo has a small space at the bottom of the bridge and the Legacy Spec does not ?? any reason for this.Would the string wrps cause gtr to go out of tune? and should"nt it have a small gap on bottom of bridge? Its (tremelo bridge) is touching body of gtr! normal for Legacy?
Thanks for any help w/this !

Re: G&L Legacy Special
It sounds like the LS bridge could be raised to a 1/8-3/16 inch height per G&L's initial set-up instructions.timewave wrote:

You'll have to lower the saddles then to get the proper radius and action , but you'll be able to pull up for sharpened notes. I'm guessing now it'll only bend down .

Re: G&L Legacy Special
It sound like you are not able to pull the term up because the back of the term plate is hitting the body, correct? If that is true, Elwood is right and the two posts need to be raised such that the tremolo plate is about 1/8"-3/16" (the thickness of one US standard toothbrush handle) above the body. This is best done by taking off all the strings to avoid damaging the knife edge. And when you're done raising the posts make sure the knife edge is seated correctly again. Restring guitar correctly, do a complete set-up as per the manual et voilá!Elwood wrote:It sounds like the LS bridge could be raised to a 1/8-3/16 inch height per G&L's initial set-up instructions.timewave wrote:

Seems like either the previous owner and/or a guitar tech had no clue how to properly set-up the instrument. Happens quite a bit with techs that try to set-up a G&L like a Fender. Oh well ...

Re: G&L Legacy Special
Before you start adjusting the Trem posts, check the spring claw. You
might just need to adjust the screws in or out to get the bridge plate to
be parallel and above the body. It sounds like the previous owner was trying
to lock the tremolo incorrectly. You might consider taking it to an authorized
G&L dealer who has an experience G&L tech for a complete setup to factory
specs.
Hope this helps.

if he sees no space under the trem, front or back, he does need to raise the trem screws.Craig wrote:Before you start adjusting the Trem posts, check the spring claw. You

timewave, time to take it to a tech, you simply don't know enough about the set up to do it right, let a qualified pro do it.

Louis I do think you are right!!!
Off to Paul it goes! I was just more worried this guy that had it really messed it up!!
I knew I was in trouble when I saw the strings wrapped like that!
Thanks !! But.... Just picked up gtr.... It is able to bend down . That does"nt change my plans I"ll give it to tech. I dont want to mess w/anything...never did.....prob. never will!! Thanks Again All!! OH I thought maybe a string gauge change might do this also. It has 9s maybe it was set up for 10s ?

Yes it does , I do know that it should"nt have all these wraps leading me to think (as the seller said )he really did"nt play much,I tuned so I can play with it til set-up and seems to be holding tune ,thats enough to get me to tech,It still plays very well and I"m just running around some blues progs. and riffin around, nice assortment of sounds .It kinda reminds me of comanche but not.louis cyfer wrote:does it have locking tuners?timewave wrote:Louis I do think you are right!!!

Re: G&L Legacy Special
you can just loosen the string, release the lock, pull the string tight, tighten the lock and tune up.

Re: G&L Legacy Special
I would bet Craig is right...too much spring tension for the string gauge, timewave wrote: It is able to bend down .
Letting the two trem claw screws out some would bring the bridge closer to spec.
It sounds like your plan to bring it in to Paul is the best way to go.

Thanks Guys !
There is always help found here! Well picked up LS from my GTR Guy and what he said about it is this, who ever sold me that gtr was selling something of a prob. and was selling a gtr. he knew was wrong as right, Tech said he normaly spends 1/2 hr on set-ups this was a 2 hr. job to get back into G&L order Trem now floats (up in back and front of bridge) It is a little higher from the body than my comanche, but that could be I had 10s put on the comanche and 9s on the legacy, maybe? He said I was being ripped off by a guy who did"nt know this gtr. could be put in order and trusting my tech I trust his opion!(as I have been going to him for over 10 yrs) Well almost got beat, but turned it around w/help of all you guys and my tech,so buyers beware! There are real creeps out there! Very relieved! I played LS all night after getting back from set-up .I Love this gtr. maybe more than the comanche? Is that even poss ? My hands are a little sore havent felt that in ages!! Could not put down this gtr. Played til like 2 am (when I got a little carried away and woke up wife)They shut down a gtr like a blown amp fuse! Thanks Again All!
