Hi, I got a new Tribute Asat Classic the other day, which I love. The shop owner was swapping me for my MX tele.. anyway he showed me the gig bags that they had for the ASAT and it had no decals etc and was of a lesser quality than mine, so I kept mine. My question is : what type of bag should be supplied? Do any of you guys use gig bags and if so which do you suggest? I dont want the guitar damaged.. My other guitars all have hard cases. Is this the best way to go?

G&L makes one of the best conventional gig bags out there. If the one offered to you did not have a G&L logo on it, it was not a G&L bag.

There are a lot of arguments for and against gig bags. There was a lengthy discussion here a while back.

Here's one of my favorite quotes from a different forum regarding the merits of a good gig bag:

We look at bracing, blocking and cushioning.

Bracing & Blocking - Holding the item in the right place in a package so that impact to the package will not allow the item to get damaged.

Cushioning - The ability for the package to absorb impact and not transmit impact to the item.

I have a shake table at my office. I can shake a pallet or one box to simulate a truck ride across your state or the whole country. We do this all the time.

Placing a guitar in an absolutely rigid form fitting hard case and placing the case in a trailer is actually lousy. The hard cases that we use (I'm 50/50 - hard/soft with 21 guitars) transmit vibration right into the guitar. The case vibrates and shakes like heck, so does your guitar. A good gig bag with a strap for the neck (holding the neck in the center of the neck area) will actually absorb vibration and not transmit it all right into the guitar. If you drop a gig bag where the neck is strapped into the center of the neck compartment, the bag will absorb a lot of impact before the neck hits the ground. Drop a hard case and the case will transmit the inertia right into your guitar.

Place a light bulb in a rigid wood box and stick it in your trunk for a week (ouch).
Place a light bulb in a padded bag and stick it in your trunk for a week (better).

i like gig bags. i use reunion blues. i have not seen many hard cases (maybe leaf) that protect better.

Oh, that's right--I forgot--I was thinking it had to be cases. Great marketing video.

Looks like they start at around $200 and go up from there. Not bad for a gigging musician. More than I can justify spending for my purposes.

yeah eddie, I have a fender flight case that came with my strat, I usually use that but I wanted something to keep the G+L in at the studio .

Back to your original question--If your Tribute ASAT is new, I am under the impression that it should come with a genuine G&L bag. Unless something has changed, all the G&L bags have an embroidered logo--Either the white on black, or the one with the grey vertical stripe with a red and white oval logo. Sounds like the dealer maybe not being completely straight. Although not the same caliber as the Reunion Blues, the G&L bags IMO are better quality than all the other most common cheapie gig bags I've seen.

yes. i got so i can take my les paul as well, with the headstock tilt, and still be safe with it. the 2 cases i use are that one, and my wolfpack case, that is made like a motorcycle helmet, injection molded polyfoam with a hard plastic skeleton and a tough nylon exterior. this one is a hard case, but much more protective and lighter than traditional hard cases. only 80 bucks. still has the padded backpack straps.

your fender hard case will not fit the asat, the g&l is longer, and will get scratched at the headstock. i know, i have the same flight case for my strat, the g&l hard case is an inch or so longer to fit the longer headstock.

those g&l deluxe gigbags (one that should come with the tribute asat) are very good indeed. other than the RB, and the john mayer strat gig bag fender has, it is probably one of the better ones.

that would explain it then. Its a shame they dont supply such a quality bag over here, takes a little bit of the sales package.... still a great guitar though!

The Gigbag is only supplied within the USA, they come from a different country to the guitars. For us to buy one would put £100 on the price of the guitars, as we would need to buy, ship and then re-box the guitars so we and the other European distributors do not supply them.

But I live WAAAYYYY outside the USA and I got a deluxe gig bag with each of my Tribby's. Its sounds to me like the Euro distributor can't make enough margin on the gig bags or can't be bothered sourcing them.

As the others have said above, they're great gig bags and more useful than a case IMHO.
