The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L instruments produced from 1980 to 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

This has me scratching my head. Never seen a first-style in this color. Thoughts? - ed

(PS: None in the Registry in this color in this era)

Hey Ken. Hanging in, thanks. Wife is a CPA and tomorrow is Tax Day. She's been sick the past two weeks, so it's been a rough go. You done with your PT yet? Feeling good? - ed

Oh man, that sucks. Helluva time for a CPA to get sick. Hope she gets to feeling better quick.

PT is long done. Besides, I'd reached the end of any help it was giving. Everyday life just kinda takes over. The thumb is not perfect (never will be), but it's nearly 100% pain free and that was the goal. Anything else is gravy.

Best wishes to you and the family!

I checked the Registry for this serial number. Here's what the (hidden) owner had to say:

"Black crinkle hardware, chrome tuners. Poorly repainted in an ugly clear green. Probably swamp ash body"

I am not aware of SB-series basses being made with swamp ash. The grain I can see through the finish in the pictures doesn't strike me as maple. Could the body be a replacement?

I would not have thought to search the serial number. Great sleuthing!

Should we educate the seller? - ed

It actually looks to be a close-to-correct (for G&L) shade of green, even if it's a refin. Of course, it would look a bunch better on ash and burst.

The grain certainly doesn't look anything like swamp ash. Per GGJaguar's site, the first gen SB-2 had a maple body. That would be a very plain grain, more suitable to an opaque color.

So yeah, it ain't pretty on that bass. The price is good if it's in good shape. Then a proper refin could be done.
