NGD - 1991 S-500 Signature

Post by offplanetfilms »

This just arrived on my end of the World... a 1991 S-500 Signature in cherry sunburst! She's reasonably light, scaling in at just under 8 pounds. (My Legacy is a whopping 9.2 pounds). Absolutely stunning swamp ash grain... not in completely mint condition, but used with a little real-world usage. Date stamp inside the tremolo cavity reads 72291. (I guess from 22nd July 1991?) Also has individual pickup routes under the pickguard. I'm still getting used to the tone... darker than my SC-3, with a bitey deep tone. She's a proud keeper in my G&L herd!

Great pick up there! I was bidding on this one early on but the price left me behind pretty quickly.

I'm glad to see that it went to a fellow forum member. Hope you enjoy her! She looks great and light swamp ash is hard to come by in a G&L.

Nice looking grain - Overall, it looks like it's in great shape for a 20 year old guitar!

Very nice. I should come back here and browse more often. I have the lefty brother, manufactured prior to Leo's passing, and purchased from Dale Hyatt at the factory 'probate sale' in 1991.

That is nice! I need a Cherry SB in my G&L collection--better go talk to the financial advisor! :happy0007:

I don't think it's a date stamp. I believe it is the internal factory order number. It was used for tracking during
the building of the instrument.

Have you checked the dates in the neck pocket and on the neck heel?

Hope this helps.

:
I think your both right. Of my 80's G&L that has the tremelo date sticker, the code is a date that is close to the
neck pocket date.
Kit's SC-3 is a good example:

The previous owner checked the neck & body date stamps: Jun 29 1991 for the neck and July 22 1991 for the body. As a little bonus since I received it, the previous owner also forwarded a letter from Dale Hyatt regarding the guitars entry in the G&L production log! ...I'll check the letter tomorrow & see what dates are mentioned (if any!)

I also purchased an unusual ASAT Signature from the same guy. I received that one a couple of days before my father passed away, so I haven't gotten my act together with photographing it yet. It has an unusual gun oil finish on the body as well as the neck! ...Also originally came with a letter from Dale about the finish used, but the previous owner has misplaced the letter for the moment (but he sent me a photo of the letter anyway). I'll get those posted soon!
