Hi Louis:
Here's mine, a 2011.
ebony fretboard, #3 neck, SS frets. Natural Gloss on body and neck. The body is the normal config, mahogany body with maple cap. This is how the switches are laid out.
I have not seen a maple fretboard one.

hmm, the volume knob placement is kind of in between the 2 pics i posted above. definitely the better of the 2 configurations though. there is no info on the g&l website regarding the layout, yet i have seen both in recent guitars.astutzmann wrote:Hi Louis:

Hey Louie,
The placement on mine seems to be like the picture in the first one.
I remember seeing that Baby Blue double bound ASAT DLX with DF a while ago, but i think it had a rosewood board... You certainly don't come across them very often

Re: asat special deluxe
its an open cavity so they can be placed anywhere with any config, but this surprises me that its not consistent, especially if its all cnc machined.
Almost as if the holes and slot are hand done.

You could ask, but you won't get an answer.
The cnc machine must be a female. Illogical, irresponsible, and unaccountable.

when i got my bluesboy replacement body in october, the neck pocket was too tight, the neck did not fit, so was the bridge pup route and the string block route. all had to be rerouted to fit right. that does not seem like cnc work to me.astutzmann wrote:its an open cavity so they can be placed anywhere with any config, but this surprises me that its not consistent, especially if its all cnc machined.

Re: asat special deluxe
I agree, when I got that asat special deluxe (#3 neck), there was no room on the high e side, the strings did not go over the pickups properly.
Now, I did not return it, but I took it to a luthier and he had to reroute the neck pocket. He also lowered the action as it was the highest I've seen on a guitar.
That's ok, its perfect now!

something is really off in cnc land at g&l. i mean, i would rather have it too tight, it is easier to take some out than to try to put some wood back in. but 1/16' off is a bit much.astutzmann wrote:I agree, when I got that asat special deluxe (#3 neck), there was no room on the high e side, the strings did not go over the pickups properly.

Remember, they were retrofitting an older built neck to a new body. The dimensions and specs have changed over timelouis cyfer wrote: when i got my bluesboy replacement body in october, the neck pocket was too tight, the neck did not fit, so was the bridge pup route and the string block route. all had to be rerouted to fit right. that does not seem like cnc work to me.
as the instruments were tweaked or changed over the years. The most recent changes I am aware of were done in 2009.
CNC'd Necks and bodies are still hand fitted, which includes removing finish from the neck pocket, during the assembly
process, to insure a proper fitting neck. They may even had dialed the neck pocket a tad smaller to make sure your
existing neck would be a proper fit after they finished assembly. [just a guess on my part]
Hope this helps.

makes sense. as i said, i'd rather have it too small than too big. but they did not remove the neck from the old body at all. it is an 07 neck. i was more surprised that the bridge pup route and the string block route were also too small.Craig wrote:Remember, they were retrofitting an older built neck to a new body. Re: asat special deluxe
After reading what Louis wrote about his neck pocket, and Craig's reply that there have been "some changes", this makes me anxious to check something: has the G&L guitar (Asat) heel width got smaller (I mean on the USA ones) than it was in, say, the mid-2000's? The wide heel, which on mine measures 2 1/4" (as compared with a Fender's 2 3/16") is really roomy and good.
Does anybody know?
Personally, I'd find it a real shame if they reduced the heel width.

That's reassuring, that your 2011 is the same. Thanks!
The slightly wider heel is one of the things I specially like about G&L's.

The neck heel size has not changed and is still 2 1/4". Sorry if my commentNickHorne wrote:After reading what Louis wrote about his neck pocket, and Craig's reply that there have been "some changes", this makes me anxious to check something: has the G&L guitar (Asat) heel width got smaller (I mean on the USA ones) than it was in, say, the mid-2000's? caused you some concern. I was not referring to the neck heel.
Sorry for the confusion.

Oh, okay. It's just that you have always referred to a "body replacement" not a "guitar replacement".louis cyfer wrote:makes sense. as i said, i'd rather have it too small than too big. but they did not remove the neck from the old body at all. it is an 07 neck. i was more surprised that the bridge pup route and the string block route were also too small.Craig wrote:Remember, they were retrofitting an older built neck to a new body. The neck pocket, pickup routes, and string block routes all need to the cleared of finishing as I mentioned.
It's better to be a bit too small then a bit too large when assembling the guitar.

they only replaced the body. but they did not remove the neck from the old body. i did, after getting both the complete old guitar and the new body home. having them to the changing over was gonna cost too much. everything was cleared of finishing when i received it.Craig wrote:Oh, okay. Re: asat special deluxe
My ASAT special deluxe is like the one in the top picture, I figure the bottom one was a first generation design that they later retooled and in my opinion the top picture orientation is not only more ascetically pleasing than the bottom picture but in my own experiences I have found it to be very functional. Especially if you want to do any kind of volume swells and I find it doesn't get in the way of my playing.

The current control setup is the one on the Honeyburst ASAT Special Deluxe. Any version of this model will have the controls like that photo.
Thanks

I think the current (top as pictured) design is clearly the better one - especially if you do any volume swells and/or would tend to accidentally hit the pickup selector switch. - ed
