Did we ever get some cool bass postings yesterday. Thanks!
Pizza for lunch today. I picked up a new one so it not leftover.
Thanks for your comments and pictures yesterday. Some great guitars and for some reason there are more bass players here than I had remembered. My venture into recording will continue today but first, lets talk about G&L.
Woods. I have talked about it before but the woods they have used on their transparent colors is outstanding. For Fender, you would find this in their Custom Shop guitars and they now have some choices with the new Select series, and a very expensive choice at that. My first Legacy was a Transparent Red over a beautiful swamp ash body. A looker for sure. I have had and still have some beautiful examples of woods. Today, show us some of your woods, 1 or as many as you like. That doesn't mean they have to be blingy but can be strikingly simple as was one of Kens basses posted yesterday. I have covered this subject before but some time ago. This is especially for some of the recent members. Now, if you have some "Hot" colors, post them too. This is my F-100 Return with a maple cap. Flamed in two directions
The L-2000 Fretless which I no longer own
An ASAT Special
A Taylor SB just for a little splash
and some Birdseye on a S-500 neck
Lets see it for the lumber!!!
Recording Session 2. I'm starting to get somewhat familiar with Pro Tools and have now borderline impressed Ginny so I am learning more songs. I can now edit a bit and I didn't tell you the timing would be great by now, but it improved as we moved on. This cut is a song I heard for the first time a little over 4 years ago. This had some timing cleanup and the band liked it so well we added a rhythm track be Steve to enhance my lead work a bit and included it in our second CD. My friend Jo Kline did the vocals and this gal has perfect pitch. I layered her harmony work. Her whole session took less than an hour and a half. There is more beer time after the fact than the actual recording. Again another Duane Eddy song called Dance With The Guitar Man. Some of you heard this last time. Notice that fade on the end? We're gettin' into new territory! You young dudes remember when these tunes came out???

Here is another song that I kind of remembered but couldn't recall the bridge or the name. I made up something in the bridge that worked and someone told me the name of this song. Turns out it is actually a big band song- Harlem Nocturne. Again this is all 60's sound, I am in a rut.

May as well add a 3rd song. This is an old Ventures song called Ginchy

I am adding a 4 Th song to show how things progress as I get more familiar with ProTools. This is an old song called Apache from our second CD with Steve doing the lead work. At this point there is more time spent on arranging and things get a little more complex.

Probably more music today than you need!-- Darwin

Hey Darwin,
Beautiful pics. I love the sound of Ash, i guess you would say i'm an ASH man.
I love the ash on my bluesboy.....
Here is my Godin Signature Strat. It has a crazy top that is really 3 dimensional, it is tough to capture it on film.

I am very taken with both Gitman's Blueboy and Darwin's Asat special; what are those finishes? Cherryburst? Honeyburst? Real good taste vibe to them both.

I've never been a huge fan of highly figured woods. They look nice, and I can see the appeal that they have, but I've never felt compelled to buy a guitar because of it, especially given the extra costs involved. My favourite finish is of all is blond. It's just transparent enough to show some grain. Ash is plenty interesting for me.

Is there a noticeable weight difference between Alder and Swamp Ash? I'm thinking solid body ASATs.
I'm also thinking they're close, but want to check in with those of you who have both.

Darwin,
Another great topic, and beautiful bass porn! Thanks for the comment on the SB-1. I'm looking forward to learning more about its origin.
I just had Firefox crash with a message about 90% complete. I'll start over, although I'm really itching to log off and play the rescue L2KE...which really didn't need much rescuing after all...
Here's some mahogany under sunburst nitro, from the "new" L2KE. Judging by the chrome, pole pieces and decal I think this one is from '81:
It isn't the most striking wood G&L has ever used, but I'm quite taken with it at the moment.
Sticking with the basses, here's the raw swamp ash on the '82 L-1000. This body is actually from November '81. I think it's the best visible grain on any of my G&Ls. There's no figure, but the grain pattern itself is striking IMO:
Moving on to the guitars, here is another example of a very early swamp ash body under a natural finish:
Again there's no figure, but the grain is very straight and super tight.
The body of my '98 ASAT Classic doesn't photograph well, but the neck is absolutely my favorite wood anywhere in the G&L harem:
This may look like finish checking, but it's actually the grain pattern. Here is some birdseye on the neck:
While we're on necks...this is a blurry shot of plain wood, but we don't see nearly enough skunk stripes around here! This is from the L2KE:
Looking forward to tomorrow's report!
Ken

Hey Lefty, with G&L's anyway, they are very close. I have a legacy in alder that is noticeably heavier than any of my Ash guitars. Last night a student brought in an s-500 that was even heavier than the legacy. But yes, they are all very close.lefty_major wrote:Is there a noticeable weight difference between Alder and Swamp Ash? I'm also thinking they're close, but want to check in with those of you who have both.

The wood really came out of the woodwork today!
Scott, Nice pics. The Godin is alive!
Jamie, Simple beauty, you can't beat it. Ash is also one of my faves.
Lefty Maj, not too late to show one!
Ken, stellar as usual.
Jos, thanks for taking the time to post those! You have more types of wood than any lumber yard I have ever been too. Cool Oavtions BTW.
Alf, lumber even come with left hand grain! thanks for the cool pics. Thanks all -- Darwin
