I've never taken the pickguard off my ASAT Classic. Are they routed for a single coil in the neck like a tele? I always assumed there was a bathtub route under there.

i put the bare knuckle mississippi queen in the neck in my bluesboy. if you want a p90 sound in your asat classic, get the fralin steelpole 43 tele pups, and you have the p90, alnico, no routing. i put that in the bridge of my bluesboy.
Louis
Thanks and yes I've read your post about your pickups change.
The polepieces seem adjustable don't they?
As you said these pickups are close to mfd but they're alnicos. Are they fatter? (as the steelpole 43 is 10k I guess it is...)
Maybe it would be wiser than rerout my guitar....

yes, definitely fatter. i also have the steelpole 42's, not quite as fat, but a little more mellow than the mfd's. the polepieces are adjustable, same construction as an m mfd basically, but with alnico magnets.
Louis : thanks this is just what I wanted to hear!!
There's also others p90 like pickups from others manufacturers it's hard to decide between Fralins, Vintage Vibe, SK guitars...

vintage vibe does not make the tele version of the s90, and the sk guitars version (he only shows the bridge) looks a lot worse to me than the fralin, but i have not tried those. the fralin has the rope around them like the originals and a complete baseplate, not just the little square like the sk.
Louis,
It would be good to know how you and your Mississippi Queen are getting along, and how she's doing with your steel-pole Lindy.
I imagine this Asat of yours to have a lovably non-skinny sonic physique, but still with teeth, and some versatility too. Increasingly tempted to do similarly myself.

couldn't get along better. i am as happy as warthog in a mud bath. i think your description is as good as it gets.
You all makes me want to buy one of these p90 for tele set.
I'll just add one thing : I've contacted Pete from Vintage Vibe and he does make the T90!!
And there's a big advantage : you can change the magnets on these pickups and they're about as expensive as the fralins...
So many pickups so little time...

yes I know and I don't know why...
there's also the klein fatman which is cheaper.
I think I'm gonna end up with one of those but I don't know which one
Replacing the neck MFD on an ASAT Classic is insane.
I love that pickup.
I know, I like the sound I've got, just trying to improve it.
Actually, if I could find someone in my area to overwind my current pickups, I think I would do it
I absolutely love the sound of over wound MFDs I desperatly wish that G&L would offer them as replacements , those ceramic magnets really come alive with extra wire.
I picked up a set of asat special pups off some forums a few years ago that the guy claimed were asat supers ,i no longer believe that as i recently checked them and the neck reads 6k which is absolutely amazing and the bridge reads a whopping 12K which i think may need to be toned down a bit.
Cyfer's route, of starting with a Bluesboy, does seem ideal. It has the added benefit, IMO, of moving the magnetic centre of the neck pup a little further towards the bridge, and it needs no modification of the body.
Liking this concept is no criticism of G&L; the Bluesboy is a great guitar, and this is just a hot-rodding of one. I really appreciate my existing Asat, and when I order my own Bluesboy and then fit it out with P90-types, I shall seriously value the design, build and timber qualities of the G&L, and the wonderful wide heel (and, for my preference, wide nut and quartersawn neck). Fender couldn't get close. In fact I can't think where else I could find a guitar I would like better. I shall eventually have Asat Classic, Asat WR, and this P90 version; all horses for different courses and all, in preference to anything else, G&L's.
P.S. your correspondent is now over 60. Damn! It took so long to find the best value quality guitars!
Louis' Bluesboy/P90 mods (darn fine job there!) on the earlier thread led me to ask a G&L dealer (who I bought my ASAT Classic from) if G&L would make a "standard" (regular premier finish, or a Special Deluxe) ASAT w/ P90's. He queried the factory. The answer came back no, and that they had done so on previous special editions, not wanting to take away from those special editions. Other than the recent korina Jr. have there been other ASAT editions with P90's? Maybe I could look for one that is used. Perusing ebay, I haven't seen one that met that description.
Also, would an ASAT Special Deluxe, or Special model, be able to drop P90's right in the existing routs without mod? I don't THINK so, but, I'm still new at this stuff. I'm hoping to be able to have P90's for both pups (Lindy Fralin or BareKnuckles, etc.).
Thanks,
Linwood

i don't know, but nordstrand pickups makes a large mfd pup retrofit with the alnico p90 design. very fine pups indeed.
So it looks like the Classic S is the other potential hotrod chassis, besides the Bluesboy, for doing alt-pickup things with a G&L T-type (with all the other plus points of G&L).
Though does it look like that little "wall" between the pup rout and the neck pocket is thinner on the S than on the Bluesboy?
Can imagine safe, pickguard-based pup explorations (type and position), with any good Tele-type back pup to match.
But still like Louis' solution. Strong body and good pup location. And unless literally identical Strat quack is required, there are two-pup wiring schemes that I actually like at least as much, like the old Fender (USA) JD Tele had.
I spoke with Lindy (lindyfralinpickups.com) yesterday re P90's in a "tele/ASAT" and Louis' info is good, re just DROP IN his into a tele neck rout, and he has others similar. I had a singlecut body made a few years ago that Lindy's P90's worked fabulously for me (my son's friend took that guitar and is currently having a ball with it)! I"m trying to decide what config to do, but using P90's of some sort, as I really like that sound for my music....trying to be loyal to G&L, but can't get G&L's P90's (via auth. dealer) in anything but the Korina Jr. (a FINE G'TAR but, I'd kinda rather have one with some sort of stained body, maybe a deluxe). So, it might end up, like Louis, with a Bluesboy, or a Special, or..(someone help me with a really specially grained/superb G&L, PLEASE)..with Lindy's P90's, or a P90 and a humbucker (Lindy's or Bareknuckle like Louis')....a shame I don't have enough $'s to make up two or three g'tars ....then again, I still have a desire to make my own....Lindy helps with that also (he's local to me)...if you desire to make up something special, don't hesitate to contact him - he's good people, loves this stuff!

mine is p90/p90 the fralin in the bridge and the bareknuckle in the neck.
Louis's setup with the Fralin SP in the tele bridge is my favourite way to go about this. Partly because of the wider string spacing: I find the narrower Gibson bridge spacing, like you would have to use with an actual Gib-sized P90 at the bridge, just too tight, cos I fingerpick. But also because of the tele-type angle of the bridge pup works so well soundwise.
At the neck pup, a regular-width P90 (or P90 in a bucker case, like Louis's) is fine, the strings are spaced closer and everything lines up well.
To put an actual P90-shaped P90 at the bridge, I'd want Lollars F-spaced one, for my fingerpicking big mitts, and so would now need a different bridge (Saddlelock?) and .... we're suddenly making a whole new guitar, and not a modded Asat. Certainly wouldn't carve up a Special just to put a P90 in instead of what it's already got.
But Louis' layout is really sensible.
To come back to the original subject, I wonder what's the difference, sonically I mean, between a p90 tele shape and a hot regular telecaster pickup just like the bare knuckles flat 50's : https://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/p ... blackguard
I'm the kind of guy who avoid to mod if he can
So I wonder if the result will be very different with the fralins steelpole vs mfds + clean boost (I use a seymour duncan sfx-01 pickup booster)
