Howdy,
Looking forward to a late lunch today,
I'll make a spicy plate of nachos and homemade burrito.
I didn't get to making bread last night. Maybe sandwiches tomorrow.
I recently finished wiring up a 4-12 cab with a mix of celestions.
There are 2 G12-25M's on the bottom and a vintage 30 with a 70th anniv. G12 30H
on the top...all 16 ohm, wired in parallel for a cab rated at 4 ohms. I'll be using this
by itself for a while so it was either 4 or 16 ohms. 4 ohms is friendlier to an amp
(like my little swart) with only an 8 ohm tap.
I can rewire it to 16 ohms (series/paralell) when I decide to add the top of the stack.
My buddy who has been working on JBLs,Altec,Gauss,Cetec...etc since the early seventies supplied me with
an old D131 12" speaker he wanted to test. For the most part he hears test tones and sweeps through his work .
I plugged in my guitar that has an old fender lap pickup into the Swart AST and with that JBL it was tone heaven !!
Since then I've found 3 more on ebay...the last two are on his bench getting a gentle restoration
and I'll have all these boxes filled soon.
This was the first JBL my buddy lent to me...I like the old jensens, but
the jbls are amazingly creamy and rich.
Do you have a favorite Amp / Speaker combination ?
How about those of you who play acoustic gigs, what do you use to
get your sound into the room ? I know from experience acoustic amplification can
be interesting for the soundman .
What do you think of Royal Purple ?

...and I really like neck pickups, but this is one fine pony:
(you might have to be signed in to ebay to view it, it's a completed listing)

I'm running late again today,
I'll see if I can come up with a few more cool cab project pics.

Hey Elwood,
Man, you have some great projects on the go! I haven't been around much as it is spring break time and the family and I have headed down to South Carolina

For me it is my Dr Z route 66 with the z best cab. The cab has a v30 and a g12h. I have a few other marshall heads and cabs but they don't come close to the z. I would love to try a Swart - I think i would like it a lot.Elwood wrote:Do you have a favorite Amp / Speaker combination ?
Absolutely love it! I WILL someday own a royal purple G&L. I remember seeing one on here when i first joined the forum - I don't remember who owned it but It was a double bound ASAT that looked amazing.Elwood wrote:What do you think of Royal Purple ?

Elwood, I am finally free for a bit, busy day. Had lunch with the girls at Mc Donalds while we were on the run. Not a healthy but fast choice.
The Royal Purple would be perfect with a maple fretboard and matching headstock!
I love your speaker/cabinet projects and like you I have always been a JBL fan. My favorite amp to use is my Twin Reverb Custom 15 RE. When I first heard it 2 years ago it was destined to go home with me. The fullest, cleanest tone. It has a speaker designed by Eminence like the JBL 15. It has a heavy cast frame. Here are some pics.
I just picked up this Carvin bass amp last week. I have been using two SWR 160 watt amps and wanted more power to drive 6-10 tens and 1-15. This does it well although I haven't gigged with it. but I will still carry one SWR head along as backup. It is an R-1000 , max 1000 watts depending how it is configured. It has many options for configuring. Her it is and keep up the great LR's Great stuff!!-- Darwin

Nice...looks similar to the newer Mackie frames (also modeled after the 80's JBL frames.)darwinohm wrote: It has a speaker designed by Eminence like the JBL 15. It has a heavy cast frame.
here's one suped up for PA applications:
We owe alot of thanks to the Lansing bros.
Here's an old EV 2-15 cab I wrapped with snakekin tolex. JBL E-145 on the bottom and a K-140
on the top. The E-145 've been hauling aroung since I was a teen, the K140 was a CL score, we found 2 for 20 bucks
...they were crusty ...now they are back to working well .
have a good evening,
Elwood

Nice amp collection. Most of mine live in the basement. I keep a Blues Junior upstairs for the G&Ls, and a Gallien-Krueger MB-150 in a travel bag for practices.
I use G-K MB-150s for acoustic gigs with my upright, and they make a great practice amp for the electrics as well. If I need extra volume I run a G-K 1-12 extension cab. These things are great. In addition to a really transparent and full sound, they fit in a bag with a shoulder strap. I have literally carried my upright, amp and extension cab all together for several blocks when parking was tight. It's not fun, but it's feasible. I don't think the MB-150 will break down on me anytime soon, but I picked up a backup about two years ago. It was an oldie from the '80s that was only making fizzing sounds, so I picked up from Sam Ash for about $50. Another $50 to a G-K authorized repair shop had it working just as well as my new one.
I run the upright through a Fishman bass eq/pre-amp, but plug the electrics straight in. I doubled on oud for several world music gigs a couple of years ago. I A/B'd it into the Fishman and MB-150. The sound really came through nicely, without having to tweak any of the settings on the amp. This leads me to assume it would work well for a classical guitar if the need arose.

It's nice to be able to get there with just one trip, well done !
I'm liking the bass amp talk, here's one that is not light at all:
1969 Standel
...and this is where the magic elves live:
good to know...we do live sound for local events and you never know what some acts will bring to the stage.KenC wrote:

Hope they don't bring uprights. They can be feedback monsters. Sometimes you can fix it by moving a couple of feet or turning it relative to low frequency sources. Quick fingers on EQ sliders can also work wonders.Elwood wrote:good to know...we do live sound for local events and you never know what some acts will bring to the stage.
My fist gig with the upright was a college all-night dance fundraiser. Fortunately I had only been volunteered for an hour at the start of the evening and was supporting a belly dance lesson/demonstration that kept the focus off of me . The venue had a DJ who would occasionally interject a few beats when things got too slow for his taste. That was before I discovered the Fishman, and every time he did it my amp went to full-voiced moan at top volume within about three seconds. That probably would have happened even if I didn't have strings on the bass - it was all body vibration. That's when I realized turning sideways to his speakers would drastically reduce the feedback. I never would have though it possible to have a couple of dozen sorority girls belly dancing around me and be very annoyed at the same time. That DJ managed to pull it off, though.
For what it's worth...

Re: Thurs. Lunch Report 5-08
Great topics..
I like V30's in 212 combo's a lot, G12K85's in 412 cabs and EV's in Mesa 112's
mesa also has my favorite 110 that I've messed with in the subway rocket, if I
remember right it's made by eminence..
For my acoustic gigs I take an AER compact 60 and before that I used a Carvin
AG100D.. Very nice.
The amp I'm using now is the Fuchs Blackjack 21 V2 with the Red white and blues..
It's a great amp to say the least..
I'd have to see one of the Royal Purple guitars in person. I love purple but don't like
lavender.. ...
Thanks...
