what should my first G&L be?
i like classic rock and blues but this is gonna be my first g&l and i will eventually get more so i really dont need to combine sounds like blues and hard rock because i can eventually get another g&l for that seperate sound. what im looking for is a classic g&l with pickups that you can only get from g&l. i want there signature sound. what do you recommend?

Re: what should my first G&L be?
Here we go again--
It looks like what you want is any of the models with MFD pickups.
Any of the ASAT models or an S500 or Trinity.....or even an SC-2 or F100.
Go for an ASAT with the large MFD pickups.........nothing else will sound like it.

You don't say where you are located. I assume you do not have a G&L dealer close by to try different models.
You don't say if a tremolo is necessary--this would rule out an ASAT Classic.
The Saddle Lock bridge on the ASAT Special is the best hard tail bridge available IMO.

For a real G&L "signature sound", I'd have to +1 the ASAT Special. It's the model I really have trouble putting down when I'm playing through my G&L herd.

Re: what should my first G&L be?
ASAT Special would be my first choice
S-500 my second.
The Asat special has the saddle lock bridge
which is also my favorite hard tail bridge. Keep
in mind that it has to be set up correctly and
locked or you can get a tinny tone from the
gutiar with buzzes and noises for no reson.
when locked (allen head set screw) it is the
quietest T type bridge made IMO..
THe S500 is the most unique trem model
guitar they have with a switch to add teh
neck and bridge pickups and a separate
treble and bass control instead of two tone
knobs you can dial it in to sound exactly like
you want even if the amp isn't set quite right
for it which means you can use it with other
gutiars very well on stage..

Re: what should my first G&L be?
I will also add the Comanche and ASAT Z-3 to the uniquely G&L models.
BTW, the Z-coil pickups were Leo Fender's last production pickups he made.
I have a request to you: please add your location to your profile. That way
we can help you find a G&L dealer near you. You really need to get some of
the models, which interest you, into your hands and try them out. You will then
know which ones will meet your wants and needs.

Re: what should my first G&L be?
Hi,I just got a comanche which is my first G+L and i could not be happier. The pick-ups offer alot of sound options, and the gtr. plays very well, overall I found it sounded unlike the rest of my gtrs. and have not put it down. Seems the more I play it the more i learn what it can offer, and the more i play it !

I make the decision for you: S-500gnr4life wrote:but i decided its between the s-500 and the asat special for me those two appeal to me the most. but its SO hard to decide.
Then we can go on to the questions about which fret wire to choose.

Re: what should my first G&L be?
I am going to jump in and go with Miles Smiles on this one.... go with the s-500. Ultimately it will give you the most tonal options, especially being your first G&L. The MFD's do have their own unique voice and that voice combined with the Passive Treble and Bass control will give you an exponential amount of options to explore.
Personally my first G&L was an s-500 and was soon followed by an ASAT special. Then Bluesboy, then...... all the way up to 8 currently. If you are interested in hearing some of the tonal differences, check out my week of lunch reports from last May (bottom of page 3 in the lunch report section) I have posted videos each day of different guitars.
Hope that helps you out.
