Hump day.... What's in a name...?

Post by ChrisPcritter »

Lunch is late again as my daughter's school has parent conferences all week..
Lame lunch today... Hot pocket ... Tomorrow I'm gonna BBQ and have pics..

So what's in a Name
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet..

I love telling folks when I'm out playing that not only am I actually
playing a lesser known higher quality Leo Fender masterpeice but
that the pickups in it were the last he designed.. The name for those
of us that it means something to has a soothing quality.. Leo Fender...

There's probably no one else (other than JC) that I never met that hs
effected my life more..

Other names strike fear in the ignorant.. like Evil Kenieve, the Grave
Digger, The B'hole Surfers..

What are some of the names that effedct you in
an emotional way.

PS...
Some writers seem to be partial to certain letters
in names like lord of the rings Soron soromon,
ork's and orikai,
Bilboa Baggins
Good thing ehey weren't partial to
D's.. lol

you never met julio chavez, but he effected you a lot anyway? although i think his middle name was frank as in jfc. some people think it was herbert. as in jhc.
i am not sure if names effect me in an emotional way, i actuall y don't get names. it makes no sense to me why someone is mike, or joe, or john or whatever. i like the way indians did it, giving the name based on a personality trait, or something else unique to that individual. i have a hard time remembering people's names period.

No lunch for me today. I did get my shiny new brother-in-law shipped of to Fort Hood, where he will be training for the next two months. Very nice send off for them at the hanger this morning. I got to tour his Chinook with him, and that made me worry about him even more! The Governor gave a nice send off speech. And they had a killer Bag Pipe band, who played in the 20 degree weather in their kilts and seemed darn happy about it!

Names. All you need to do to understand how important Leo still is to G&L is to do a quick eBay search for your favorite guitar and read the item descriptions.

Other names that mean quality to me? Well, I tend to be brand loyal. I only wear Allen Edmond's dress shoes. I think Toyota makes the highest overall quality vehicle across their entire product line. And G&L is the same thing, to me--just really well executed electric guitars. I only use Death Valley cables in my guitar rig, with a few DiMarzio jumpers as backups.

Trivia, Evil Knievel grew up in Butte, America. About 50 miles south my location right this sec. My Great Uncle Larry went to school with him. He was a knucklehead. Evil, I mean--according to my Uncle and Grandpa. And if you are ever up for a wild time, come to Butte for Evil Knievel days. True Insanity!

And finally, band names have always been my nemesis. Most recently I played with 3 other guys under the name 'Tonight Only'...hmmm...Somebody should start a band naming consultancy.

I'm trying to figure out whether you've met Joan Collins or Jim Croce! Personally, I hope it's the latter ;+) Ha!
(One of my early songwriting inspirations)

Sorry, I'm having a terrible year. So, I tend to avoid Megadeath if at all possible (though I'm certain it will catch up to me eventually). And what can you buy with 50 cent these days anyways?

What was I saying? - ed

PS: Enjoyed your vid on Monday. Made me want to drink beer and give the z-coils a test drive.

Names that have affected me:

Amelia, for reasons entirely personal. Whenever I come across this name, or hear Joni Mitchell's song, I always get emotional.
Dick Feynman, more commonly known as Richard: great inspiration even from half an earth away. Inimitable character.

- Jos

P.S. Everybody knows JC is John Corzine, former CEO of Goldman Sachs and former governor of New Jersey ;)

Lunch was a great salad over a Runestone discussion.

Whats in a name? Would have been a good question for my mother. She named my older brother Darrell and then me. Whodathunkit?-- Darwin

Johnny Carson really had an impact on me as well while I was growing up.

Was sort of a ritual catching the show each night.

I thought of him as family.

For a while I would video tape the stand-up acts. I have a few tapes of greats. Most of it is still funny even though some topics are not relevant to current events.

I saw a ghost hunting show on cable a couple of months back. Those guys hadn't met Johnny Cash either, but they tried to contact his spirit.

Jos - I've never met anybody named Amelia, but it has been a favorite name since the first time I heard Joni Mitchell's song.

I never hear the name Darryl without thinking "and my other brother Darryl".

The most unfortunate name I've ever come across was a friend in kindergarten (this would have been about 1970): Cameron Corder. Life must have become rough for Cam in the early '80s.

Hot pockets the meals of champions, nice report.

I do dig being able to explain the wonders that are G&Ls and how Leo Fender was involved even if most folks think its a copy or worse that Leo perished in the 60's.

the man had so much more he needed to accomplish and left the world a little to early.

Steve Jobs, love him or hate him is another name that changed the way I perceive and interact with the world.

Authors like Robert A Heinlein, Frank Herbert and C.S. Lewis.

As well as one of the greatest inventors this world has ever know... Robert C Baker.

P.S.
I am a bit of a Tolkien fan so with apologies.
Sauron,
Saruman,
Orc,
Uruk'Hai
and Bilbo Baggins.

thank you, i didn't want to be the one to point it out.

i thought some more about names, and some names that do have an effect on me: asimov. my favorite author. respect him on many levels. i'll probably never read all his books, 467 total published if i remember correctly. russell crowe. there is not a day that goes by that someone doesn't tell me i look like him. shoot, most girls who date me usually do it because they like him. oh well. i don't see the resemblance, but with so many people saying so, strangers on the street, there must be something to it.

Right on with Asimov, Just finished Nightfall that he wrote with Robert Silverberg.

Great read.

I love his article "Music to my ears" in the book - Science, Numbers, and I .
It talks of how the major scale and the harmonic series are related.

i wrote a paper in college on that subject "the historical development of dissonance in western musical culture". asimov was an influenc3 on me, although i did this for contemporary music theory class tryig to explain how what previously was considered unlistenable, became widely accepted/enjoyed. indeed the whole major scale, and the rest of the chromatic scale as well is found in the harmonic series. my contention was that as instruments developed, and emphasized higher, more dissonant partials of the scale, people's ears got used to hearing those intervals as more consonant/agreeable. in the beginning only octave and perfect 5th was accepted as consonant, later the major third then minor third. each generation growing up exposed at an early age to these intervals regularly became comfortable listening to them. this went all the way to the 20th century when atonality became acceptable. classical music kind of went on a different path, but the very same things could be observed in the popular music of the 20th century, each generation liked music that was "noise" to their parents ears. with amplification, electric instruments and the use of overdrive/distortion (unprecedented upper partials dominance) the process repeated itself at a much quicker pace.

Fascinating stuff Louis,
if ya ever scan that paper , i'd love to read it.

Traditional Indian music has accepted microtones for much longer it seems than other cultures,
all that high freq. content in the drone strings may have sped up the evolution of ragas, etc.

(just guessing at this point)
