Real or fake?

Found this listing on daBay for what is claimed to be a Rampage prototype. What do you think: real or fake? In any case, nice looking.

It's a looker, & I'd like to believe it's real but " 2002 Signed by Luthier CLF1" in the description bothers me. It would probably bring that kind of money if it's real - It would be a collector, for sure.

First of all, the neck is stunning as is the rest of the guitar. I suspect it is an employee built using a CLF1 waterslide with the rest of the number cut off. I am suspicious of the Tone Pro bridge but who knows. An employee could build it any way they want.-- Darwin

Interesting...I really like the old headstock (like in my avatar) curves,
which this one does well .
I don't see much Rampage DNA, it looks more like
the reissue F-100s to me. Beautiful woods.
I suspect Darwin might be right about an employee guitar .

This looks like one of the guitars that Gene Englehart's son was auctioning off late last year. There's a thread somewhere about those and if I remember correctly they had those type of serial #'s. Of course I could be totally wrong as well.

That would make it a tad more interesting. Like many above, I have my reservations about the TOM bridge too but G&L used those on the Junior in '98 so it's not entirely out of the ordinary. The same can not be said for these LP style knobs though. To me, the body curves look indeed more like F-100 than Rampage but the reintroduction of that model would have to wait another 4 years if this guitar is indeed a '02. Like Darwin mentions a nice Bird's Eye maple neck. I wonder whether the 'CLF1' decal is under the coat or not. The outlines seem to be remarkably visible. So to me it's either a beautiful looking fake (with Warmoth body and G&L neck or something) or indeed an employee guitar.

If there at least were some papers coming with it and a decent hardshell case I might have been interested.

Yes, that is one of Gene's custom built guitars. I have seen this one in the flesh when Dean and I were down there one year for NAMM. I don't recall
what year it was, perhaps late '90's or early '00s. We visited Gene at his home which was not too far from the factory. He had his own workshop setup in
his garage. The CLF1 is cut from an unused serial number.

The seller has really mis-represented this guitar. It is not a G&L prototype and certainly not a Rampage. It is just an employee built guitar.

(And boy, with Josey Wales' Commemorative, sprinter92's guitars, and this one all for sale, what a superb selection at that) If any of us buys this guitar, it should be for the right reasons, not due to some marketing blurb
