Emergency Wednesday Report.

Post by zapcosongs »

SBNT has a freaking wedding at his home in a few days. Under the circumstances, I would have graciously declined a LR invitation. So I'm happy to step in, if only for a moment.

Let's get this out of the way: I'm Ed, and I'm a moron.

Lunch today was plantain chips, an apple and filtered water from the front of my refrigerator.

Pickup covers: They seem to come in just a handful of basic colors. White, black, sometimes creme. In a perfect world, would you like to see more variety in the color of pickup covers to help you make your own guitar(s) more of a unique statement? Why not yellow covers with Belair Green and a black pickguard. Why not silver covers on a black Will Ray, with purple skulls on the guard? This may be an extreme example, but you get the idea. Would having more pickup cover options excite you and stimulate your mind or wallet?

G&L: Many of us here seek out seller advertisements on eBay, Craigslist, looking for a great bargain or find on our next G&L. I'd love to hear about the STUPIDEST thing you've ever seen in such an ad for a G&L guitar.

Have a great evening! - ed

Hi my name is Michael and I cannot say I have not done a few moronic things in my life.

DiMarzio offers a relative rainbow of colors to select for their pickups.

I think this could be a matter for law, though. It is good to restrict ice cream flavors to Vanilla, Chocolate and Strawberry because Baskin Robbins knows the pain of some brat whining about not offering a 32nd flavor they want. There needs to be a law against painting your house baby blue or hot pink. Houses should be earth colors as in some shade of green or brown unless it is a boat. Then it can be blue. It is not that there are not enough color options. It is that too many people have no taste so it is better to remove their ability to make bad choices. You don't leave it up to the drunk to decide whether to drive or not. You take their keys away. I have seen black guitars with lime green pickup covers. What possesses people?

I have read a few stupid ads but I have forgotten them. I saw something not more than a week and a half ago and I wish I could remember it. It was irritatingly stupid too. I can only vaguely recall a guy making a big deal about his guitar being so rare simply because it had an uncommon finish. Yet anyone could order a guitar with the finish so it was not rare, as in limited availability, it was rare because it was not a popular finish.

We know how to find our own. :searching: Welcome Ed!

Seriously, it is cheaper to stock only a few colors that match with a wide variety of choices. This is the trend in most all manufacturing. Cars, for instance- can you get a green interior for your green car anymore? How about blue interior with white seats? Personally, I'd love to see mirrored pup covers to go with a mirrored pick guard- make em disappear. Plenty of aftermarket choices to do these kinds of things. Dyed bone covers are really cool on the right guitar.

That is the best way I have heard it described. For instance, did you know they only made two Copper Bronze Metallic Hemi Daytona's in 1969? both had tan interior...

No, in a perfect world, there'd be replacement MFD pickups in more common sizes, such a jazz bass sized MFD and some EMG sized models.

The P-Bass sized second style SB-1 MFD basically saved my Martin EB-28 bass from exile when the MFD loaded first style SB-1 showed up.

I hate it when I see a G&L advertised as a "Fender clone"!

Face it, there are a lot of stupid ads out there from peoplewho don't know any better.

I'm happy with the basic pickup cover colors, but a cream option for Z-coils and small MFDs might be welcome.

But I really don't need pink or lime green!

Hey Guys,

I can only imagine the stupidity of the ads from the guys who would order the hot pink pickup covers on their ASAT classics!!!! :shocked003:

The funniest ad i can remember is an ad i saw on craigslist a few years ago (although not for G&L). A dude was trying to sell an old gramophone... It was advertised as a GRANDMA PHONE :happy0007: :happy0007:
I almost bought it...cause i mean who doesn't want to talk to their Grandma

Still brings a smile to my face every time i think about it.

First off, Ed...I don't think a true moron would be self-aware enough know he/she is a moron, so by the very fact that you think you're a moron, you're not!! :D (And, BTW, I second Michael's statement!)

Pickup covers...don't really care too much. Personally I prefer the traditional colors and don't think anything else would be able to part my money from my person.

Can't remember any really funny ads, but I agree with Bill about people trying to sell G&Ls as Fender clones...seeing an ad for a Legacy that says "Strat", or for an ASAT that says "Tele" annoys me!!

I'm with Michael, too many choices would end in too many bad choices. Although... think of all the normal colored pickup covers they would sell when people bought used guitars.

This ad isn't all that stupid. The price is a reasonable starting point, the description has a couple of funny lines, but the last picture just creeps me out. Would you buy anything from that guy?!

Ed, I am a Red kind of guy but I can't imagine Red pickup covers unless they were painted to match the body, Now, throw a little Gold Sparkle on some and we may be talkin'.

Stupid ads? What may seem stupid to me today may be the thing to do tomorrow!-- Thanks for jumping in-- Darwin

Dave - I don't find that guy so creepy. Understand though that I get up in the morning and see ME in the mirror. And I can't help wonder whether ZW might not lust for that particular guitar given his sensibilities.

On the ad thing, one ad that amazed me (and I forget where I saw it) was for a late-90's ASAT Special that the seller stated was made by hand by Mr. Leo Fender. Yeah, right. - ed

Rio Grande has some cool pickup cover options, I just never liked their pickups, which are geared towards the "fat" and "hot" market.

I really like the tortie covers. The sparkles are cool, too, though it'd be tough to find an application where they look reasonable, other than whacky over the top Mosrite-esque stuff.

Something that would look cool is an old, '40s-looking grey pearloid, like this: *linky*

Pickup covers aside, I'd be severely tempted to buy a brand new guitar if G&L offered some plastic covered ASATs like the above.

bob is a great flamenco guitar player and a long time friend. his son is a bass player and also a client. bob used to be my training partner before he got remarried. truly one of the nicest people i have ever met. i used to use his shop to work on my bikes. every tool imaginable.
did you know that bob mosher is the "beaver". and wally as well actually. his father wrote that show and based it on his own son. they even cast wally to look like him. when the movie leave it to beaver came out, bob took me to the premiere. a lot of fun.

So typical. There is talk of beaver, but I'm never part of it. Oh well.... - ed
