well, there is a lot of stuff you need to work on, but there is potential. need to work on timing and intonation. also vibrato. it seems you are just plain forgetting about it. the rhythmic variety is also lacking, becomes very repetitious because of it. you use the same 4 note starting pattern so many times, seems like you are letting your fingers taking you on a ride of familiar patterns instead of being in control yourself. also you are stuck in the blues box, need to free yourself of it, and use more chord notes, outlines etc, not just going up and down those 4 box notes. these are all common beginner mistakes, so don't despair, getting them pointed out will help you to get past them much faster. using the same trill so many times gets tiring too. seems like you need to listen to, and just learn more licks, so your vocabulary can broaden, and can express yourself more eloquently. think about licks as words. you put them together in sentences, and we all use the same ones, but if a writer was using a very limited vocabulary to write about a variety of subjects, it would not be exciting reading. another writer with a much broader vocabulary can say the same thing in a much more interesting and exciting way, engage the reader more actively, immersing the reader into the story. the same is true with music. learn more licks and listen to how people use them to form sentences. free yourself from being a slave to your fingers. this is accomplished by doing exercises to achieve finger independence, so you can use any finger in any order anytime. takes time, but a worthwhile endeavor.

please understand that i am not being negative, i would not take the time to write this down if i didn't think you are capable of a lot more, and become really good.
ps. there was also a phone ringing in one of the songs during the solo.

Thanks for your Input. I do appreciate it. These things you mentioned I am working on through an instructor. No where near a great player but just wanted to share the sounds of the comanche.

Nightrain,

You seem very receptive but I thought you should know Louis attended Pasadena Junior College as a music major, then moved on to USC where he majored in classical guitar performance and minored in recording arts.

BTW, I was only able to play the first track for some reason. As far as hearing the Comanche, that track uses a lot of fuzz type distortion. It seemed to mask the guitar's natural voice. Are any of the other tracks done with a cleaner tone? I think if I heard the guitar clean I might be able to understand more of the guitar's sound when listening to it with other effects.

Yes I have several that are clean. Chill and Reminisce. are. Thanks for the info. Guess I should have stated that I'm no virtuoso or will probably never grace a stage just love to play. Career and Family got in the way of ever doing anything musical for money.

yes, he does seem receptive, i think that is the reason he is gonna progress far in this. there is nothing wrong with not being a virtuoso, but i do think as this stage he needs to grab the opportunity to learn and improve, and his attitude is certainly a credit to him, as is having a teacher. thanks for filling him in on my background, hopefully it helps to understand where i was coming from. i am a pretty straight shooter and unfortunately my intentions are often misunderstood, i am glad nightrain can appreciate my input for what it is.

It would have been easy to take offense. But where would that get me. When I first read your post I was like, " Damn I do suck." But then I reread it and took it as my guitar instructor climbing my butt for not progressing in a lesson I should have learned. I asked for all I got by putting my stuff out there and sometimes people come along just to be nice. I do appreciate your honesty. I know I have flaws and I get in ruts and I'm trying to get out of them for sure. I wish I had the tools out now when I first started this Journey in my teens. I can imagine where I might be today. See I'm 41 now and a trucking carreer put the cabash on doing anything musical. Now I work nights for an oilfield company. Benefit is I get to bring my guitar to work with me and can play in between the phone calls and dispatching the drivers.
Thanks, Nightrain

I stopped playing guitar for years and only recently started again. I am waking up and learning new things at the same time. My intellect is beyond where I left off. In the few months since I started focusing on music again I have learned so much that I was not exposed to originally. I have to put in time on guitar but my mind has continued to advance. Some days I pick the guitar and I have leaped ahead significantly. Things are coming together........sometimes even on their own without me doing anything except stirring an interest. Neither one of us are going to play quite the same now compared to what we did yesterday. People can get good at things they only do in their spare time. People are capable of exponential growth. One of the worst things anyone can do is cast in stone a mere snapshot of a moment in time and make it their identity. Your frame of mind is a huge factor. Make everything count. Noodle with your heart. No putzing around!

:happy0065: Hey lou just wanted to say i also needed to here what you said, as i, perhaps on a diff. level of play still find myself trapped on common ground, as you said using phrases as words and adding to your library is always a good habit.
just wanted to say thanks for kickin this sleeping dog.
