The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.
I just bought a new Korina Collection ASAT Junior II, which was shipped to me via UPS. It's a great-looking and sounding guitar that's a pleasure to play, however, there's a cosmetic issue that has me a bit baffled. As it turns out, the bass side of the fingerboard has dark markings around most frets, most prominently frets 11 through 22. I've attach some photos that hopefully are clear enough. My skills with a camera are what they are.
What would you think causes these blemishes? It's hard to imagine that G&L would let a guitar leave the Custom Creations shop looking like this, but it's also disappointing that an authorized G&L dealer would sell a guitar in this condition without considering there might be a problem. Unfortunately the dealer is in a different state and I wasn't able to inspect the instrument in person before ordering it.
I'll give the dealer a call next week, in the meanwhile it would be interesting to hear how you'd feel about this. I am overreacting?
To me it looks like clear coat has run onto the fretboard during the spraying process. It would darken the rosewood and also soak in immediately. Just a guess.-- Darwin
it seems that when they sprayed the back of the neck, some got on the fretboard (a normal occurrence), but it was not properly cleaned off after. only takes a little polishing to get it off. it is not a permanent aesthetic issue. you can contact the dealer, however taking care of it yourself is very easy, a dremmel polishing wheel, a little steelwool or some 800 sandpaper will take care of it. you are right that it should have been noticed by someone along the way though.
You might try some plain ol' Zippo lighter fluid, dabbed lightly on the "runny finish". The naphta will remove some finishes. Follow up with some fretboard magic/lemon oil, etc. But, yea, darnitall, G&L should have noticed it - ESPECIALLY ON A LIMITED EDITION, that's supposed to be so special...and, the dealer should notice it....

The link is to a post describing a similar problem observed on a Korina at a store.
I just checked out a Korina G&L........the light tint finish got onto the fretboard in a few places. That's not coming off easily. I really wanted a Korina S-500 or Legacy, so I may cancel my order. If so, that will free up a lefty...
