Lunch Report, 2/2/12: Thursday Confessional

Post by kakerlak »

Not sure I'll end up eating a lunch today. I have a headache that's been gradually worsening since I woke up this morning. Really, I feel hungover, but didn't drink anything last night...

Let's start some arguments. Looks like G&L has more finish colors than ever before. What are your favorites? Least favorites?

Some of my faves:
Himalayan Blue
Tangerine
Natural (always love natural on a good piece of wood)
Honeyburst
Pretty much all of the metalflakes (G&L has about the coolest metalflake around)

Some of my not-so faves:
3-tone burst
Cherryburst
Margarita
Trans red, blue and green

And sorry, but I honestly hate:
Redburst
Blueburst
Greenburst

What non-available colors would you like to see introduced? I'd like to see a Surf Green, Salmon and maybe some subtler sunbursts.

Now it's time to fess up and show your true colors... Who here is also a regular on another brand's forum? I will confess that I'm a regular on LetsTalkGuild.com. I own some Guild electrics and like them for the same general reason I like G&Ls. I also registered on the Gretsch Pages a while back to ask a tech question about my Tennesseean, but had no desire to make it a regular haunt.

Who's been fraternizing with the enemy? What's your post count? I checked this morning and am at 489 on the Guild board, though I'm sure if there was a way to tally up posts from the old G&L board, I'd probably have more than that here...

actually, eating might be the ticket to get rid of the headache.

i like natural, honey, lemondrop, honeyburst, butterscotch and blonde, although i only like the nitro blonde and the poly butterscotch.

i am ok with blackburst, clear blue, clear red, vintage white

hate the whiskey and the metallic solid colors and most of the metal flakes.

i am a member on strat talk, but i have not been there since i joined g&l.

I like honey and lemondrop, too. I prefer a more yellow version of the old tele butterscotch than what G&L has gone with and I always thought their white blonde was too opaque, though I like the color.

Just back from an Italian buffet. Lots of carbs and calories. If eating will get rid of a headache I am protected for years just from today. Worst part is that I still have to do my Friday afternoon date with Ginny at Big Louies tonight because we gig tomorrow night.

Oh boy, I like confessions and I will confess that a Transparent Red over a great wood grain is tops. Clear Orange and natural are close seconds. I like Cherry bursts on nice grains or almost any transparent on spectacular wood grains. For a solid, CAR is tops, Fullerton Red is sweet and certainly Surf green. On the other end (Should be illegal) is black and I do have a black guitar but even a Transparent Black is at the bottom of my list. Blondes are very nice and Transparent Butterscotch is also fine. The G&L Flakes (pun) can't be beat! I have too many sunburst guitars and they are not at all my favorites but are still very nice in their own way. To summarize, I have favorites and wouldn't kick any of the others out.

I thought I was on the Taylor forum only to later discover that it was the AGF. I seldom post but did once on guitars as a sound (pun) purchase. Some guy from Chicago informed me that anyone who thought guitars were any kind of an investment needed their head examined. He was unable to straighten me out. I told him that I felt bad for him loosing money on the collection that he had sold. He responded by telling "Thank you, but I did quite well" :shocked028: :shocked028: I need guys like that to straighten me out. I have lurked on other forums but have never found any of them as enjoyable as this one. I did get a post deleted from the AGF and no one even commented but it disappeared. I had made a comment about the Taylor Road Show which I really enjoyed. My comment was regarding the Taylor acoustic guitar demo saying that they had shown the different tones of the different woods and what else are you going to show with an acoustic???, and that I had especially enjoyed the Taylor Electric demo. This was not well received by one of the moderators and it was gone, no reason , no contact. If you get a post deleted here at least Craig will tell you and explain why. I do try to behave but sometimes a person has to act up just a bit. It was only a harmless comment about acoustic guitars. I have some and love them :shocked003: :shocked003:. I also find it interesting that some of these acoustic owners really own some fine ($3,000 to $5,000 ) acoustic guitars and in the electrics they show Mexican Strats or Epiphone Les Pauls. I would be more impressed if they would at least show a Tribute! In the end this is the only forum I spend time on. Boy, I hope I haven't crossed the line with this post!!!!-- Darwin

I really like G&L's finishes. I am tired of traditional bursts, but they can be beautiful.

Soft spot for fullerton red, especially with a maple neck and white binding.

I really like the opaque butterscotch, also especially with maple. The new margarita looks cool to me.

I don't frequent many other boards. The knowledge/attitude ratio is too low on a lot of them. So i just use search if I am looking for something.

I may not know much but at least I try and be nice about it!

I used to hang out a lot at the Taylor Forum until Bob Taylor blew it up because of critical comments and it became the AGF. I also hang out at the unofficial Martin forum on occasion. I have about 250 posts at the Les Paul Forum, and over 1700 on the Seymour Duncan--so those two and here are the ones I contribute to the most. The LPF is totally GAS inducing for me.

I think G&L does a really good job with their finish options. Then in addition to the body finish, add custom touches like neck tint and finish, fingerboard wood, pickguard and plastics colors; it makes for a lot of exciting combinations. For me unfortunately, if also brings up some "What Not To Wear" moments in the style department.

So, I like most of the finishes--if combined with other features that are pleasing to my eye. I don't care for Transparent Blonde with a RW board--but a GOT neck, or even the white maple, look fabulous to me (like a "Mary Kaye" Strat). Same with the Butterscotch Blonde--GOT maple by itself or with a ebony fingerboard (like my Legacy Special I call "Marilyn") and I'm drooling. I think some finishes look better on a Legacy body than they do on an ASAT body. And top wood makes a HUGE difference in the transparent finishes.

Here's three of my favorite girls: from left is "Mary Kaye", "Marilyn Monroe", and "Jo-Jo". (Miss Leslie's middle name is Jo, so "jo-Jo" represents her red hot mama alter ego!)

Image

I think my least favorite G&L finish of all time has to be the Gold Burst. That one was pretty sick, and thankfully they are rare. (Wish I had one!) :D

I don't think I'd order a Candy Apple red--the ones I've seen don't really look like a true CAR to me. The newer Ruby Red looks very nice though, but I haven't seen it close up yet. I'm not a big fan of natural finished electrics--they remind me of somebodys shop project. I've seen some beautiful guitars with the Green Burst and the Blue Burst, but I have grown tired of them. These days I tend to like warmer colors.

I was always a sunburst guy, at least until I met Miss Leslie; but I really enjoy the solid colors these days. I have G&Ls in 3CSB (5), Tobacco Sunburst, Blonde, Butterscotch Blonde, Fullerton Red, Belair Green (2), Lake Placid Blue, Vintage White, Gold Metallic, Silver Metallic, Blue Flake, and Black.

Here's a couple of pics of some of my sunburst G&Ls:

These are both ash--a Tobacco Sunburst Comanche and a 3CSB S-500.

Image

And here's a pair of my alder Legacys, one currently upgraded with Legacy Special pickups.

Image

When you talk cherry sunburst, nobody does it better than Gibson. This is one of my Les Paul Supremes. The camera simply cannot capture all the shadings of this burst as it moves from the cherry edges to the golden center. Stunning guitar.

And don't tell me you don't like Three Color Sunbursts! What's not to like?

Favourites - Fullerton red, blonde, Spanish copper, clear orange.

Not so favourites - all the greens and blues (except Himalaya blue).

I saw an ASAT in tangerine the other day, it's very nice indeed, almost a burnt orange sort of colour. I reckon G&L's burst finishes are possibly the best out there, but have to agree on the three tone being the least nice of them (it's the red ring that does it for me, Bill!).

I post at TDPRI a bit, that's another forum with helpful people who aren't jerks most of the time. I don't think it has any official Fender links though. My vote for worst board goes to The Gear Page. I get the impression that no-one knows what they're talking about, and believe it to be one of the greatest sources of undue hype on the internet.

Lunch today was turkey lunch meat. No bread, just the meat.

These really depend on body shape, top wood, and pick guard trim. In general, here's how it shakes out.

Finishes I like:

ALL THE METAL FLAKES, Tangerine Metallic, Margarita Metallic (perhaps it is just the Mopar fan in me), Clear Orange, Clear Red, Clear Blue, Black Burst, Honey, Honeyburst, Lemondrop, Natural Gloss, Butterscotch Blonde, Candy Apple Red, Graphite, Yukon Gold, Lake Placid Blue, Cherryburst, Black, Emerald Blue, Clear Forest Green

Finishes that don't do anything for me:
Redburst, Ruby Red, Royal Purple, Fullerton Red, Midnight Blue, any of the whites, Himalayn Blue, two-tone burst, tobacco sunburst, Silver

Finishes I really don't like:
Greenburst, Whiskey, Spanish Copper Metallic, Yellow Fever, Emerald Green,

Other than this site, I have hung out on http://www.offsetguitars.com - a pretty good community for Fender Jag/JM folks, lots of customs builds there. Since we are talking about colors, my favorite feature on that site is The Dressing Room: http://www.offsetguitars.com/dressing_room/index.htm Check it out!

I was writing this as a couple of posts were added. I am copy/pasting from a text editor and leaving everything alone even though I will end up saying a few things already covered.

Colors seem to depend on what they go on. Of course you want a decent grain, flame or quilt on transparent finishes. Some colors look better on a T-style than an S-style and visa versa. The fretboard wood makes a difference as well. Some colors are never represented well in a photo. I think the Natural finish looks like plain lumber from Home Depot in a photo but it is like fine crafted furniture in person. If I could have a large collection I would be open to many more colors. Part of this is having to eliminate some for various reasons not necessarily due to not liking them. There are several finishes that I do not like at the same time as not disliking them either. I just am not attracted nor repulsed by some.

My favorite colors are the Old School Tobacco Sunburst, Honey, Cherryburst, Blonde (white blonde though I do agree that it would look even better if less opaque but I still like it) and Transparent Orange.

Middleground: Yukon Gold, Tangerine, Belair Green, Vintage White and Black.

If I had to choose one flake I like it would be the orange or turquoise.

I do not like Blackburst, Greenburst, Whiskey, Graphite Metallic, regular Tobacco Sunburst, 2-Tone Sunburst, 3-Tone Sunburst and I do not like the Satin body finish option.

I do not belong to other brand's forums. I joined The Gear Page when looking for a guitar and info but I think I have made maybe 6 posts.

My favorite finish color is "Leo Fender G&L"!

I have a 1984 first style SB-2 bass. It's in the era SB/SC red. It''s near the top of unapproved colors for me, but it's such a nice instrument, so what!

I'd take it over any other second style SB-2 basses hands down (later Leo-era examples included).

I had never really thought of a having a "favourite" so i went to the basement studied the finishes i have and came up with a list

Fav's (in order)
Turquoise Metal
Fullerton Red
Honey Burst
Vintage White
25th blend
CAR
Clear Blue
Tabacco Burst

But that leaves with with a list that i am GASing for

Another Metal Flake
Royal Purple
Spanish Copper
Belair Green

And some i will most likely never own (but still possible :whome: )

Natural
Blonde
Any other Burst

The only other forum that i have ever been a part of is the Dr Z forum. Mostly lurked, made a few posts, but there wasn't much action over there. Some really useful info however!

And Bill, i love seeing the collection - it makes me :D
Makes me think we should do a sub section in the porn forum for collections....

Jag, didn't know about the offsetguitars site. It's tempting, b/c I really love my '64 Jazzmaster (in all seriousness, if I had to pick a single Leo Fender pickup design as the very best sounding, it would probably be the JM... on the other hand, a close 2nd would be the original, square-ended S-500 pickups, then all the others a closely-bundled 3rd, lol).

I still don't like the blueburst. I don't think there's a person in the world that would claim that top is anything less than a specatcular cut of maple, but I just never dug "fantasy" colors like that over pretty wood. I think PRS is to blame for the modern day prevalence of blues, greens, trans-black, purple, and associated bursts. To me, something about those non-wood colors undermines a good cut of wood in a way that a natural/regular sunburst, or even something like a walnut stain on mahogany, or Gretsch orange doesn't.

Bill, it looks like you might have some redundant instruments. Feel free to send me the duplicates. :happy0007:

Brock, it's cool to see you around here! And I kind of have a perverse affection for that orangey SC/SB model red, too.

When I first got into guitars, I hated burst finishes...I don't know what was up with that, because now they are pretty much all I like! I love to see nice grain under the finish! Though it has to be a good burst...the burst finishes on a lot of the Epi's still make me want to hurl! But I love cherryburst, honeyburst, and a tobacco burst that doesn't get too dark at the edges. And I think that blueburst is georgeous, Jag!!

Ironically, as much as I like to see wood grain, I don't care that much for natural finishes (except on acoustics, where it's my favored finish). I've seen a few that really grab me, but for the most part, I want to see at least a transparent color...and I do like a lot of transparent finishes...especially butterscoth, blonde, honey.

Generally speaking, I don't like solid colors, but there are a few that catch my eye...the Tangerine, Yukon Gold and Margarita in particular.

I belong to a few other forums, but the one I'm most active on is the JVM Forum, really enjoy that one. I'm aslo on the Christian Musician Forum, but it's not all that active these days. I own a Taylor acoustic, but have never joined their forum for some reason.

Jag,

I am with you on the blueburst, I like it. I fell for one of those deluxes and overpaid for it!

I have kinda come around to Jamie's way of thinking, though, after my initial infatuation. And it's one of those finishes that looks great for 20 min after I change strings and do my little polish/tune up. Then it shows every little bit of smutz...

I still thinks it's beautiful, but not quite right for me.

I used to think I disliked SD pickups...had a JB in a Charvel Surfcaster that I just never gelled with. In the end, I think it was the guitar's tone that I didn't gel with (too bad, it was a real looker with it's unique design, quilted maple top with greenburst finish!). I was suspect about the JB that shipped in the Legacy HB, but seeing as I had no real choice I decided to give it a shot. So far, I have NOT had an uncontrollable urge to replace it...though I may someday!!
