Are more springs needed for 11's?

I just went from 10's to 11's on my Comanche last night, and I could not screw the claw that holds the springs in far enough to get the bridge properly set up. (There is more room, but I cannot get the screws themselves any further into the body than they already are). It has 3 springs on it, and I guess the easy answer is that I should probably buy a claw that will accommodate 5 springs. But am I missing something?

In the meantime, I'm playing it tuned down a half step and it sounds amazing enough that I will probably leave it that way for a while. (Curt Mangan pure nickel (11-48) strings. I would definitely recommend them if you are interested in pure nickel strings. They sound killer. Lots of vibe).

If you use 4 springs, the trem will be harder to move, so you maybe should make the holes for the claw screws deeper. But you'll need to have a very long drill, to keep the angle flat and have to be careful not to damage the existing threads.

My Legacy had 12-56's on when I bought it secondhand. Still worked pretty well with 3 springs, but the bone-ache in my fingers forced me to go back to a regular set of 10's.

An option could be to get shorter (same threads, same diameter) screws. This would allow you to screw them in further away from the block.

Thanks for the tips guys. I am afraid to put a drill anywhere near my beloved Comanche, but I think I can handle shorter screws.

Good, but be sure to put them in deep enough, before you mount the springs.
