Jan 11 Rhinovirus Lunch Report

Post by repoman »

Lunch I woke up this morning with a stuffy head and a scratchy throat. I don't get sick very often but the fact that I've been burning the candle on both end for the past couple of weeks can't be helping. So today I'll be downing a steady stream of hot tea and honey alternating with OJ. Then lunch will be a shot of Polish Penicillin (even though I'm not Polish), homemade chicken soup. I'm planning on this blowing over very quickly. Power of positive attitude.

So we'll start out with a Non-G&L question: What do you do suggest for your homemade cold cure/prevention?

G&L - Today I'll deal with a relatively minor and strictly aesthetic quibble. I like the look of a f-hole on hollow bodies. But I wish G&L would shot some dark paint or stain on the inside of the bodies. I just think it looks nicer than bare unfinished wood. But then maybe I shouldn't be peaking in other peoples f-holes! Who's with me? Painted or bare wood behind the f-hole? Or do you have any minor aesthetic issues with our beloved G&Ls?

Non G&L part deux: Any football fans - USA football, not futball ;) - following the playoffs?
I grew up a Patriots fan when they pretty much stunk up the joint. So its been good to follow them when they are winning. I've been rooting a bit for Tebow and the Broncos just cuz I like to see the underdog win. Yeah, Tebow is a polarizing force, but he is fun to watch. But I'll stop rooting for Denver when they go to New England on Saturday. Like most Patriots fans I'm a bit concerned about them going the distance with their shaky defense this year. But I'm still hoping for another Patriots Superbowl win. Time to place yer bets. Who's going all the way? What do the bookies say are the odds?

that's all for today, thanks for reading.

lunch was a mexican salad

F hole, I agree, when I got mine, I was surprised that the inside was bare, painted body colour or black.

I have also been a patriot fan for a long time, they start slow this year and build during a game, almost seems like they want to play 6 quarters. What concerns me is two things, one I don't think their defence is good enough this year and two, I am shocked that they can't throw the long pass, everything short to welker or gronkowski. Its working, but they need more I think.

Green Bay is looking the best.

I have a friend who swears by this remedy but I have never tried it.

Run a bath as hot as you can stand. Get in the tub. Stay in there as long as it takes to drink a mickey or 26er of vodka.

Take 2 aspirin and go to bed covered in horse blankets. Sweat it out.

Cured........

Hey Jeff,

Good stuff so far this week, including the mike keneally video from yesterday. Brought back some great memories - He played 3 times for us when i was at GIT, what a great down to earth funny guy! It had been years since i had heard his name...Thanks!

G&L

Given the choice i would keep the f-hole unfinished.... but it would be nice to have the choice! With all the options g&l offers i am surprised it is not one of them.

NFL

I am a hugh fan of your bitter rivals - The Jets! On the AFC side i think the Pats have the upper hand to represent the AFC this year for sure (even with said defensive problems) I like the 49ers to go on in the NFC, i think green bay also has a lot of defence issues and if san fran plays a great game i think they beat the pack.

I know what you'll be doing Saturday Night! I give Tebow nation a 1.5% chance of winning.

Hope you feel better fast.

Scott

Howdy Heff,

Too bad about the head cold, my only cures are, hot tea, alka seltzer cold medicine and some quality time with a G&L guitar. Usually works for me. :)

I am not an F Hole kind of guy. LOVE my Z3 semi-hollow no F- Hole but just can't get past the look of the hole in the guitar. Finished or unfinished no clear preference, but I have seen a posting here of some cool stickers and a metal grill filler inside the hole. Can someone find and re-post these?

I'm with gitman001 as a longtime, or should I say long suffering Jets fan, and a Falcons fan based on proximity of homebase. That said, Jets and Falcons will have to wait until next year and I see momentum behind the Saints with Packers breathing down their necks. Should be fun!

yeah, overheating your body to dangerous temperatures, 105 + in most likelihood can kill the offending organism, along with your braincells, and even your hole body. i guess a dead person could be considered cured. :shocked028:

Scrambled eggs and toast for lunch.

I thought you were breaking into a song for a moment with that opening. Drink plenty of water. I will wait until you are beyond the psychosomatic stage to address the orange juice.

I have not missed a day of work due to illness for years. I offer my blood for transfusion to the feeble. ;)

Rest and hydration is my prescription for your on-setting cold. I used to know a chiropractor who could crack you in a cold's early stage to stop it and her score was 100%. Have lost touch with her though.

F-holes: I am with you on the darkened interior. The raw wood is a distraction from the finish. It is a hole, not an emblem. I avoid F-holes anyway. I am not interested in housing spiders and dust.

Aesthetics is an area where G&L shines. For being a Fender Leo came up with a nice headstock as well. Some people have said they do not like it but I think it is fine. The ASAT HS is better than the Tele HS.

Sorry to hear about the bug, that's the worst. I have had a serious bout of hypochondria because my wife and daughter, everyone at day care, except one mom (who happens to be a pediatric nurse) have all had a terrible stomach bug this past week. I think I might be out of the woods now, but hard to say.

Fluids are my main thing, good old H20, mint infusion (it's not tea unless it comes from a tea tree) Emergen-C, OJ, chicken soup. Once in a while I go in for some old fashioned witch-doctor remedies like echenacia, garlic, ground rhino horn, you know (or you might if i knew how to spell echinacea).

I think G&L's look best without the f-hole, generally. But I think the contrast with bare wood can be cool. AS far as aesthetics I like G&L's, but someone mentioned taking the s-500 back to the first body style recently. I really like the early G&L 's' type body styles. G&L finishes are well executed and pretty diverse for a production company.

i have gotten into loose leaf tea lately, mostly japanese and chinese green tea, and it really works wonders for the immune system.

as far as f-holes, my bluesboy is natural, so the hole being natural on the inside is fine with me. on other finishes i am sure it would bother me.

i think the saints are the best team right now, if they get past san fran, look out.

of course the commin wisdom of defense winning championships, the 49's should be a shoe in as well as houston. i don't think it will happen though.

Hope that cold disappears before it gets a chance to set in. When I feel one coming on I take some echinacea pills, eat garlic and have a couple of crispy bacon and mustard sandwiches, and some chicken soup. Wisdom in our family was to feed a cold. A few aspirin really help with the sore throat, especially if you gargle it a bit.

I disagree with the black f-hole thing. I think they're doing the right thing leaving it uncoloured. I don't like the positioning or size of the G&L f-hole though - it's too small.

I'm trying to enjoy American football - we get a game on TV every now and then down here - but find the constant stopping of play whenever someone gets tackled, or they call a time out, to be incredibly frustrating. Give me rugby union anyday!

Only have a moment.....

I have 10 oz of OJ every morning. Since I started this ritual, I have not had a cold or flu in years (got pneumonia once, so ymmv).

I have one F-hole guitar, a Japanese Fender '72 Thinline reissue. The area around the F-hole is unfinished. Sometimes I think I want to put some lacquer around that edge, or maybe some black paint. Fortunately, I have more important concerns and have let it be.

Football. My Redskins suck, but ironically, they beat the Giants twice this year, so NY is doomed. I'll be rooting for the Baltimore Ravens, my second team. But if I were a betting man (and I am not), my money would be on the Saints. Hard to root against Drew. Most of the other teams standing have defensive deficiencies.

Nice week you have going here, Jeff! - ed

Thanks all for the replies

Alf - the Patriots old offense coordinator McDaniels is coming back to the team so I wonder if we'll start seeing some long throws again.

I suppose there could be something to the hot bath curing a cold. Mimic your body's natural defense of a *mild* fever to kill the mesophilic organisms causing the nasties. But like Louis warns, use extreme caution or you'll cook some brain cells too.

Sam - that could be the next marketing ad: G&L - the cure for the common cold

Jamie - I'm with you on the time delays in football being frustrating. I wish they would modify some of those rules. Like I tell my wife sometimes, only 5 minutes left on the play clock so about an hour left to play!

Zapco - A day without orange juice is like a day with sunshine. I agree the Saints will be a tough one to beat.

Seems like the results are about 50-50 for the finish inside an f-hole.

I will refrain from chastising you Jet fans among us! I could say that it serves you right to suffer, but I'm too nice of a guy to say that. ;)

Jeff:

Sorry for the late reply. For a cold a spicy hot soup works great. Chinese or Thai. For a sore throat, I'm not sure. I usually suck on something with menthol.

As for the f hole, in what order do they finish the guitar? Is the guitar completely assembled before it is finished, if so they would have to know what color to paint the inside to match the finish. I imagine a black f hole would look bad if the guitar were white so they couldn't have a one color fits all f hole color.

Not sure about what will happen in football this weekend or past this weekend. I think Tebow time will die this weekend however. Teams know what he is capable of doing. How the Steelers let him burn them with a pass in OT is beyond me. Speaking of which, aren't the new OT rules stupid.

Thanks
Tom

On the topic of the f-hole, the interior color matched is a slippery slope.

It just needs to remain a shadow under all lighting as far as I am concerned.

The raw wood advances as positive space instead of retreating as negative space.

Exposing the raw interior is a glaring unsightly oversight.

while we are on the f hole topic. I like the fact that my bluesboy has one, but personally, I don't like the shape. Why an f hole, why not some other kind of hole, grill, what have you?

I am a day late for lunch. We had a marathon band practice yesterday and last night topped off with brewskis and smart talk.

I like the f hole and think it is best as is. Besides, I like the smell of the wood inside the body. The edges of the f-holes are also finished nicely on mine

Jeff, sorry to hear you are under the weather. I like hot soup and rest. I have always recovered by doing that and If I don't, it will be in the newspaper. -- Darwin

I'm catching up on old threads, so sorry for the late post. I neither love nor hate the G&L f-hole shape, but I would like the raw finish inside de-emphasized a bit. The idea of a grille is a good one too IMO.

I really like the semi hollow hole on Cole Clark Culprits. Pity that the headstocks are so darned ugly.
