Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Introduction: You know me. My name is Ed and I'm a moron.
No lunch today. Had a big breakfast and am planning to have an early dinner out with my family.
New Year's Eve: What do you guys think of the whole New Years Eve celebration thing? Doing anything special this year? Any traditions you want to share? Personally, I hate new years eve. To me, the whole thing is like dating was in high school. Lots of build up, expectations, and for what? Folks look back. Folks look ahead. I don't get it. I do this every day of the year anyway.
Resolutions: Anybody here use the new year as an opportunity for self-betterment through making resolutions? If so, are you resolving to do anything special in the coming year? If you've made resolutions in the past, have you stuck to any of them? Know anybody for whom a new years resolution turned out to be life-changing?
G&L: Can you think of any resolutions that G&L ought to make for the coming year? Personally, I'm pleased with the direction of the company, and I'm all set with the gear I have for the time being. However, were G&L to reissue the Whipper-Snapper..... ;+)
Have a great one and be safe. See you guys next year! - ed

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
a new year resolution is a failure by definition. whatever change the resolution is supposed to achieve, it is obvious the person does not want to do it. people decide sometimes before the new year what this change should be, and they put off the start til after new year because they don't really want to do it. if they did, they would have started when the idea came to them. making the resolution is an exercise in procrastination, and the result is a failure before it even starts. i see this kind of attitude with people all the time. they come i8n the middle of the month to look around in the gym, then they say "i'll start fresh in the beginning of the month." tomorrow, or even today is as good day as any to start. this starting fresh the next "whenever" people want to start counting from is just silly. the new year is just another one of these. if the activity, change in lifestyle, whatever is a worthwhile cause, starting immediately is the way to go. putting off shows lack of motivation, which results in failure.
sorry for the rant, i just see this kind of attitude so much, it is really disturbing to me. even more so, schools are actively encouraging this procrastinating behavior with kids. sad.

Having French Toast for brunch.
The New Year's Eve celebration is nothing but hot air to me. It is an excuse to get drunk with people for people who need or just want one. Get together with whomever but the celebratory focus on the end and beginning of a year is the bag of wind.
New Year's Resolutions: Generally speaking, when I am ready to do something I just do it. I have changed before I have time to think ahead and announce I will be doing it.
I know someone who has not had coffee since the new millennium. I guess if there is something that can benefit from a significant marker in time why not use it?
G&L Resolutions: Business is business. Resolutions are part of the process. I would like to see G&L get thoroughly organized and commit to remaining that way in the future. Stop the use of the parts and serial number grab bag. Make sure you have the materials to proceed with a special series so you don't have to switch specs mid-stream. Become more transparent and less evasive so the process speaks for itself. Too many things are left to chance. "Will it be Sperzel or Schaller tuners on my custom guitar?" Exert more control over the burst finishing process and turn out a consistent => predictable result, etc.

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Ed, much like you I made a mid morning breakfast as Ginny had to out and change a battery on a someones monitor. I have been testing our alarm system and have ordered new batteries, something that needs to be done every 3 to 4 years.
I have not made a NY resolution in 68 years, why start now. We are having a nice dinner and it is questionable about me seeing the new year in. I may be under the sheets by then.
I would like to say that it has been another good year for us and I appreciate it. Several of my friends cannot say the same as they are no longer here. Sobering reality. To those of you that have had a great year, you are fortunate and appreciate as much of it as you can. For some that have not been so fortunate and had some speed bumps, I hope it gets better next year. I wish everyone the best in the new year and I have enjoyed sharing views with all of you this past year and especially seeing pictures of the fine guitars that you have posted, even if they are not Red!!.. thumbup: -- Darwin.

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Precisely the most pressing factor that motivated me to spend money on guitars this year. The way things have been going none of us are in a position to take another year for granted. I upped the proportion of fun in what is left of my life when I bought two keepers. Although I did not avoid the color neither ended up being red.darwinohm wrote:...it is questionable about me seeing the new year in. Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Bunch of grinches....
I treat NYE like any night out - if you're in the mood for fun then you'll have a good time, simple as that. Good company, good music and tequila help things along. I had a good NYE this year. Had a gig where between sets there were burlesque performances by some incredibly sexy women, got paid a very tidy sum for it and came home to my beautiful girlfriend, whom I met on NYE two years ago. I only had a handful of beers so I'm not hung over at all AND there were nice leftovers in the fridge to eat for breakfast. The year is off to a good start.
Resolutions are to actually lose weight, starting next week . I also resolve to purchase my dream amp this year in an attempt to cure me of GAS once and for all.

I'll probably end up joining a viking-metal band or something this year, rendering all my gear useless I may have to get an Invader

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Ha! This is good!
Blarg, I think you're this year's winner so far. Darwin is never far behind, though (Ginny puts up with a lot with the runestone and all the red guitars! ;+).
We got invited rather last minute to a neighbor's who's boy plays bass and is friends with my oldest, who plays some guitar. The man of the house over there plays some guitar, and has been borrowing some of my gear for months (having fallen in love with my Japanese Fender '72 Thinline reissue)....
Anyway, for some reason, this guy's boy didn't feel like playing, so I got to play some bass this evening - after having consumed a third of a bottle of vodka which I didn't hardly feel at all. Luckily, the songs were easy (Knocking on Heaven's Door, ie) and my kid played some guitar (Hamer P-90 Special as the string happened to be fresh on that one).
Anyway, after music, we played with some sparklers and harmless little poppers and I actually had a really nice time this evening. Also, I resolved to continue to refrain from making resolutions, which made me feel better than the vodka didn't.
What was the question again? - ed

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Just had a nice breakfast, omelet, sausage and toast to soak up all that beer.
We went to a pub in Niagara On The Lake, ate fish and chips and waited for the band. We have seen them before, they are called gatorbait. Lead guy plays harmonica and they have a new bass player and a new singer, they were awesome. I've talked to them before because the harmonica player and the guitar player both have Morris custom amps, like I do, so we have chatted about it.
What amazes me is the guitar player. I believe he's 22 years old and I would say one of the best players I have seen live in a band. He says he's been playing since he was 9. skinny guy with long skinny fingers. Plays with such ease.
I noticed he had a new guitar last night so I asked him about it, its a 2010 USA fender Strat Deluxe. Very pretty. Told him to look up G&Ls....
We were going to go there at 8 ish but we were bored so we went at 6:30. Funny, we went to bed at 11:55 and I bet I was asleep at 11:56.........
Our evening cost $120, this morning at breakfast I over heard 2 couples talking about their night, they had dinner at a winery, hotel, etc, each couple spent $700 for the evening.............so not worth it for new years.
P.S. Its a british pub called the Angel Inn, lots of draft, domestic and import. They had a special in, English Bay Pale Ale, was dark in colour, light in taste, I loved it.

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
I usually stay in on New Years, and this one was no exception. Today, just got done watching that wild Packer-Lion game, and are having 'Fridge Clean-Out' items for dinner.
Looking forward to the Rose Bowl tomorrow before getting back to the daily grind.
Happy 2012 to the entire G&L family,

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
i stay away from all the craziness on NYE. just another night, but clubs charge people 10 times the normal cover so they can be squashed together like cattle well over the occupancy limit. no thank you. i worked as a bouncer for many years, and what i have observed, people are trying to convince others, and themselves that they are having a good time. once in a while i'd catch a look scanning the place "is everyone seeing what a goof time i am having", and there would be a sobering coldness in these looks. then back to pretending to have fun. also, i have never drank. no alcohol for me. don't know what it is like to be drunk. i do know that most my friends have such a good time that they don't remember a minute of it.
so i stayed home, watched some tv and played guitar for about 4-5 hours.

Sobering - as usual - Louis.
But I agree with you by and large. That's why I usually despise New Years. People try so hard to have a special good time that it is actually depressing.
You will never find me on the roads on New Years Eve. I had a surprisingly nice time just two blocks from my house last night. And although I drank a bit, I did not get intoxicated. I almost never do. That stuff is poison to the body in significant quantities.
Anybody else like the roast beef at Roy Rogers? ;+) - ed

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
Ed, we stayed home last night too and it was fun. I was going to cook a nice dinner for us but I got fired as the cook. Instead she told me to peel the potatoes. I had a big bottle of vino that had been sitting in studio for some time and we killed it by the time the ball dropped in New York. I didn't wait up for midnight in Minnesota. The ball dropping in New York was good enough for me.
You can't convince me that Roy Rogers is still cooking Roast Beef! He and Trigger are cooking up there on the big range! Is it happy hour yet??-- Darwin

Re: Quickie New Years Eve Lunch Report
The club I played at charged different ticket prices for different parts of the venue. It was $50 for the bar area, $350 for the seated balcony (the venue is on the top floor of a 15 floor building). Usual entry on a Saturday is $10. So they charged between 5 and 35 times the usual price - I was stunned to see that the expensive seats were all booked out. We only doubled our usual fee for playing there - they asked for a quote a long time before ticket prices were posted. If we'd charged 35 times our usual amount I'd personally be able to go out and buy 3 brand new ASATs.
