12-30 Year end closeout Lunch Report

Post by sam »

coming to ya early today, wife and I are headed to north Georgia mountains for the morning and afternoon for a bit of hiking in the woods, fresh air and oh yeah, pick up the kids from their grand parents!

Bringing both the week and the year to an end, hope it's been a good one for all. Last year at this time I was laid up following foot surgery and infection which has since healed and "hiking" today, so I can definately say I ended better this year than last. Others here have had some breaks and bruises that I hope are up and dancing now.

Lunch today - There is a burger joint near Helen GA called Yonah Burger that we will be ingesting .... enjoying today. You can see Mt. Yonah from there hence the name of the place. Good old fashioned pack and grill burgers that clog the arteries. I do not eat burgers too often so this will be a treat. Call it a reward after hiking mountain I guess.

Do you have a favorite burger spot or one that you try to visit when you're in the area?

G&L topic - Hello I am Sam and I am a pedal junky. The experimental side and the "lets see what this will do" side has pulled a lot of cash from my pocket over the years. With G&L now producing pedals what do you think the next pedal should be?

Those not in the BBE line are a Flanger, Reverb or a Looper. I would like to see a looper.

Non G&L topic - This time of year is loaded with college bowl games and pro playoff games which I turn on every know and then. I find most games have lived up to bowl / playoff level excitement this year. My school did not make it but will watch the wife's alma mater Georgia Tech tomorrow. Who knows what the Falcons will do, but all eyes are on New Orleans I think.

Do you have a favorite college or pro team and are ya tuned in this year?

Thanks to all who came to the holiiday camp this week, this weekend be safe, have fun and PLAY LOUD!!

Next week reporter to announced later today

Hey Sam,

Great job this week... it was nice to have time to reply for a change instead of just lurking 8-)

G&L: I am not sure what the boys at BBE will do about a new pedal, i have not even had a chance to try out the current models!
Do you have a favorite college or pro team and are ya tuned in this year?
My NFL team is the New York Jets.... has been since i was a young lad. Tough team to watch sometimes, makes my blood pressure go through the roof! I will be cheering for the Detroit Lions in the playoffs, thats my brothers favourite team and they deserve a good run deep into the post season.

Happy New Year to everyone

I enjoyed the stuffing out of your reports.

It's been a great week, Sam. I hope you enjoy the hike and the burger. I try to stay away from them too. It isn't hard for me to pass up the fast food chains. If I have no option besides fast food burgers, I go with Wendy's. Not that the taste or nutritional value is very different, but they are very selective about the cattle (only beef breeds) and quality of the meat and go to considerable lengths to be sure the animals are handled humanely. The one regional burger chain I indulge in is Five Guys. It's just pure greasy goodness, and probably the best fries I've found anywhere. The fries are made from real potatoes, daily, right in each restaurant. I'm not sure whether they've reached down your way yet, although I did see one in Charleston SC last month.

I am also a pedal junky. Two of the last three acquisitions were Moogerfoogers, and they've seriously curtailed my desire to buy other pedals. I would definitely consider buying a BBE/G&L looper. The other pedal I would like to see somebody make (although it might not be a big seller) is an envelope controlled volume pedal that would work well for chords or slow bass notes and not color the tone. The "backward guitar" pedals I've heard just haven't cut it for me.

I'm a Packers fan, so I'm very tuned in this year. One the college side, neither of my alma maters (The Citadel and UMASS - Lowell) would be able to stand up against a really good high school team, so post-season bowl games are out of the question. Winning a regular season game can be a big enough deal!

Happy New Year to all!

Great week Sam, really enjoyed it.

Since I'm slightly hungover today, we had turkey soup made from the leftover bird from Xmas. Very warm and nice!

Quite frankly the whole pedal thing scares me as a new guitar player. Not really knowing what sound I want and not really knowing what's out there. Going to a music store and asking is embarrasing and doing research online is also frustrating because there is so much out there.

For now, I have my Soul Vibe which I received for being LR and I bought a Boss ME-70, which I am experimenting with now, mostly I play clean, maybe some distortion or reverb.

Growing up in toronto, you'd think I was a Maple Leafs fan. Maybe I'm just a bandwagon kinda guy because I can't stand the leafs. Richest franchise in hockey, sold out games for the past 40 years, Leafs TV, etc,etc and they haven't made the playoffs in 5 years.......Only the worst dont make the playoffs in hockey.

Shameful.

I lived in boston for 2 years and became a celtics and patriots fan. WINNING!

Love the packers too, WINNING!

Was a lakers fan but I think they are done and need to rebuild. Just sayin!

Happy new year everyone!

Sam,

Next time the "experimental side" comes around, check out Copilot FX. They are a line of boutique pedals made in the Dominican Republic. Everything is analog and hand-wired, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality. There isn't a "normal" pedal in the entire line. I stumbled across their Antenna pedal (described as a "mix of LoFi ring modulation, sample reduction and near-theramin sounds") about a year ago. It took me about 15 minutes to dial in a usable sound, but after I sort of figured it out every tweak of the knobs opened new sonic possibilities. They make a "triggered white noise generator" that might be on my list for 2012 as a new take on distortion.

Sam, it was fun. You did good.

Lunch: Chicken

Pedals usually don't work for me. I would rather spent the time working on my playing skills than listen to a transistor. I am a tube junky. Just bought me a bunch of el-84s that I hope to add to my amp. In the future I will build a reverb unit, forget the pedal, give me tube.

I am a bears fan. Nothing from college, but mostly just happy with a good game played by good players. I don't like to watch blow outs or horrible teams. (for example Jax).

Thanks for a great week Sam, a hike and a burger sounds like an ideal day to me. I went for a hike yesterday even though it was only 29 degrees. On the way there I got a call from my wife telling me there was a hunting accident the day before in the area and the hunter didn't make it. Kinda takes the relaxing part out of the hike but we had lots of orange on and my dog really needed to get out.

Favorite burger place is actually a chain, sadly, as I always try to support local business. Ted's Montana Grill, main reason they are my favorite is I can get a bison burger.

good week sam. for me it's in 'n' out burger, usually a 3x3 animal style if i want a good burger. or a fatburger XL. for those who have tried those, you know how good they are.

i am a usc fan. of course no bowl game, #5 in the country is all we could do. that is where i went to school. also played water polo there.
as far as pro, i like teams that have usc players playing for them. like greenbay, miami, jets, giants, kc, saints, dallas, pittsburg,...wait, the list is too long. it includes almost every team. 29 i think.

sam, your board has a lot of bbe stuff on it. i only have the sonic stomp and the soulvibe, and interested in the buckshot if i can ever find a place to try it out. a looper would be nice from bbe. i am sure they would do it well. i have the rc2, but it is not very friendly to use. i am actually using a tc flashback as my looper right now. works better than the rc2. my only problem with the whole bbe pedal line, and the reason i don't have more of them is the size. just too big. i don't know why they can't bring it down to the standard 1 space pedal, like the mxr size. i don't think for a reverb or flanger bbe could outdo the tc electronics toneprints right now. those pedals are great, and small. i have the hermidia reverb, and i would get the wet reverb if i didn't have that one. or the hof.

i am a pedal junkie.

this is my current board

here are most of the pedals i have

Sam, great week and glad that you and your wife could get away for a day of hiking. Hope that you load up on the great burgers after the hike. Lunch today was my usual sandwich but I did something special. I had crackers instead of chips! Glad that you have recovered from foot issues. Ginny had foot surgery 2 years ago and it takes a long time for a foot to heal.

You showed some nice pedals yesterday. I only have a couple and I always use a sonic stomp. I have no opinion on what G&L should come up with next. I do have a Vox Tonelab which can do way more than I can even imagine.

Ginny is the sports fan here and I think she has given up on the Vikings, at least temporarily. When I was a kid we were busy helping the wagons move westward and kicking horse apples and cow pies and watching the smoke was our only sport :shocked003: :shocked003: :shocked003: Happy new year everyone, and no, I have not started early!-- Darwin

I am a bit of a pedal junkie. I don't use any wild effects and don't have an enormous pedal board (it has been, fuzz-OD-boost-tremolo-delay-tuner for a long time), but I find pedals that are perhaps a bit better than the ones I have and keep improving it. The overdrive pedal is probably the most frequently changing thing on there - I just can't find one I like. I'm hoping the Buckshot that's in the post changes that.

KenC - Another South American manufacturer I've come across is Dedalo FX. Handmade, really good quality stuff. I've only owned the compressor, but it was a very nice one. Nothing too out there, but the tremolo and phaser pedals have a lot of control over wave shape. I have one of their delays on the way.

I love a good burger and plan on having one for dinner en route to tonight's NYE (day ahead here) gig. My favourite comes from Danny Burgers, a place thats been there for something like 50 years. Like all the best things in life, they're dead simple - beef, cheese, onions, sauce, token amount of lettuce, bun. The double cheesburger is perfection.

I have seen some American football and find it frustrating to watch. Seems to be more about stopping play and showboating rather than getting on with the game. Give me rugby union any day ;)

Great reports this week Sam!

Really great reports this week, but I have the head cold from hell and haven't participated at all.

For some reason, Wendy's (my long-time favorite) has changed their packaging, and by the time I get the burger home, it's cold. We've been going to Carl's Jr. for fast food. I love a good burger, and there are lots of good places her in Portland, Orygon for a good one.

I think the one pedal I need is a good distortion/od that will turn my Mesa into a Marshall. I think the Boogie has the best lead tone of any amp out there; but sometimes that Marshally AC/DC Malcom Young crunch is handy, too. I've got a lot of pedals, though prety much everything is mainstream, not boutique. I don't believe that everything has to be hand-wired and true-bypass to sound good.

I agree about the BBE-pedals being a bit too big--I wish they were Boss or MXR sized.

Playing ketchup....

I think my best G&L "Bargain" was the 3csb maple neck Legacy I got 18 months ago for $400. Badly mis-adjusted, it plays superbly now and has been my Number One Legacy for most of that time. I've bought most of my G&Ls used and gotten really great deals on great guitars. So when you consider value and the "smiles per mile"--they've all been bargains!

I bought some new gear this year--including the Blue Flake Legacy Special and the black Legacy I got from Dwasifar. Got one of those Olympus LS-11 hand-held digital stereo recorders, and some new Sennheiser headphones. I got a Soul Vibe from my LR duties earlier this year, and I bought a used Carvin PA. But the big issue for me this year was my health, so I don't feel like I got to use the new gear enough.

Hopefully, I can be more active with my music in 2012.

Happy New Year to all my G&L friends!

Thanks to all and great to hear from you Bill, you were part of my remark "breaks and bruises" to others, do hope yer feeling better.

Scott - I mentioned Falcons only because I live here, I have been a Jets fan since the Joe Namath days and all others between. Hope Sanchez continues to improve along with the rest of the crew. We watched Calvin Johnson while he was at Georgia Tech so I do like watching him along with the rest of the Lions.

Jeremy - Yes, a bit of Cream rises to the top, or the end of the week.

Ken - We have Five Guys round here and I agree about them when I want to just get down and dirty. Moogerfoogers get all the raves and I have just been to cheap to get one. Must be corrected on that. Cheers to the Citadel cadets! Lived in Savannah in 80's so Charleston was an easy trip for fun and went by the campus a few times. Will look into the Copilot FX.

astutzmann - here's to the hair of the dog, now that feeling this week as well with all this vacation stuff.

meomix - Da' bears, it will happen.

Dave we have Ted's round here as well, gotta get one of those bison burgers.

louis - do agree with the BBE pedal size.

Darwin - yep foot surgery is a pain, glad all is well.

jamie - will check out the Dedalo FX for sure.

Bill - again great to see ya round here. Mesa does have the lead, but like you, always looking for "that" sound.

TGIF!!

Great week Sam, at a trying time of year to boot. Bravo!!!

Your hike sounds wonderful. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy. There's a park behind my house, and for the past several months, they have been renovating the hiking/biking trail. These upgrades had required ugly fencing (said to protect trees and prevent erosion) and lo and behold, a week or so ago, they took the horrible fences down. This fencing had really had a bad impact on the wildlife, who were prevented from getting down to the lake, etc. The weather has been (too) mild, so we've been able to get out on our feet and our bikes and enjoy as we have not been able to in some time.....

Burgers: I'm going to catch some crap here, but I like McDonalds. They have hooked me. For about a dollar, a McDouble is a great snack treat. Sometimes I splurge and get a Quarter Pounder with cheese or a Big Mac. Wendy's leaves me cold. A Whopper is cool from time to time. Five Guys makes a great burger, but the fact that I have to park and walk makes it a less convenient option.

Pedals: I seldom use them, though I have a few. I really haven't recovered from the rather impulsive act of selling my lovely-sounding AD-80 (with very rare power supply no less) several years ago. I've since gotten a couple of cool old vintage amps that feature tremolo but no reverb. I like a touch of reverb, so I may look for something along these lines in the near future. Is there a pedal that can emulate a great spring reverb? I don't know. Louis seems to have a couple of interesting suggestions to check out. Would love to hear from others on this as well.

Sports Teams: NFL: Washington Redskins, Baltimore Ravens. NHL: Washington Capitals. MLB: Washington Nationals, Baltimore Orioles. NBA: Washington Wizards (mildly). College Sports: Maryland Terrapins, mostly. Georgetown Basketball. Miami of Ohio (my alma mater)

Sorry Sam. One last time this year: What WAS the question?! ;+) - ed

Sam, It was a great week for you to be LR host as it ended the year on such a good note.

I prefer burgers that are charcoal grilled rather than fried. I used to work nearby a bar and grill (charcoal grilled) that made the best burgers. These were easily 3/4lb patties. We would often do a burger run if not eat there. Now often have hamburger at home probably because I ate mostly chicken and fish for years.

Of the BBE pedals I only have enough experience of the Soul Vibe to form an opinion that it is one of the least desirable vibe pedals in terms of the sound I am after. This is subjective so I am not making a statement that is intended to rate it with low marks as a product. I do not like the range of sounds that it offers. I like the Roger Mayer Voodoo Vibe for the Hendrix on LSD sound and the original Shin-e Univibe for the subtle Doppler modulation. I realize that these two pedals are in a different league than the Soul Vibe, especially in terms of price. I am mentioning all of this mainly considering the sound they each offer. I have a Neo Ventilator that is an incredible Leslie rotating speaker simulator.

College team would be the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Pro teams, I don't have a favorite. I like a well-covered NFL game. I like the time of year. I like the way Monday Night Football was done on regular network television. I also liked the Sunday Night Football games. I miss John Madden.

Hey Louis, the raves I have heard about In & Out Burger amaze me. I don't get it. They are not much different than a McDonalds except there is a slightly cleaner product. It is like Intro To "Heathier" Fast Food for McDonalds Junkies. But they still are at that level just without so much grease. Yet people speak of it like it is exponentially superior.

if you want a reverb pedal that does just spring reverb well, the hermidia reverb for under 100 bucks is great. the wet reverb is a little different, and is about 200 bucks, but a really nice sounding reverb.

Great week Sam!

Pedals- Well I try not to use them too much but i do have a couple of BBE pedals. I like E-H I have had Small Stone & Clone for years a Echo/Delay E-H quit making years ago and a Big muff. But I allways have on the board some type of little green box and a Dyna Comp My old cry baby stays in line too just not on the board.

Burgers- The wife and I had one today There is a place here called Kennys burger joint- They make a killer Bacon and Egg burger.
Fried egg, bacon, sharp cheddar cheese and burnase sauce. Killer!

Teams- Cowboys somewhat,Great stadium. Mavs-NBA Champs tho they are not playing like that this year. I am a KC Royals Fan so I keep up with the Rangers but I am not that big of a fan. TCU and Texas.
We have the Stars too but there former owner run the team in the ground after they won the Stanley Cup. Maybe that will change now they have a new owner.

Have a good new year everyone.

This is exactly what amazes me. It is so much like McDonalds yet people say it is so different. What is even more amazing is that a guy that seems to be so heath-conscious and a body builder is saying it. Consistent with the basic pattern that seems to follow the In & Out burger phenomenon..........just amazes me :shocked028: :shocked003: :shocked028: I am floored.......dumbfounded..........speechless............utterly baffled by this.

Yeah, like he said............The 'animal style' is best, but even the regulars are no comparison.
How anyone can stomach the tasteless cardboard being passed off as hamburgers at McDonalds is beyond me.

Effing amazing! You have no idea how much into fast food you have to be to think In & Out burger is that different than McDonalds. You are an official addict junkie fast food meth head. There can be no other explanation for such a perception. Clinically psycho!

That's hilarious. Actually I hardly eat any fast food at all--extremely rare occasion.....but I will make a point of stopping at In-N-Out when I go back to California. I don't put them in the same category as Mickey-D, Burger King, Wendy's or any of the other usual joints. That's like believing that Taco Bell is Mexican food.

I hope the "Clinically psycho" comment was made in jest.

It is like Intro To "Heathier" Fast Food for McDonalds Junkies. But they still are at that level just without so much grease. Yet people speak of it like it is exponentially superior.
hmm, i see no resemblance between mcdonalds and in & out. it is about the taste. just melts in your mouth. of course only the animal style cuts it. the others are nothing special. and you have to know about animal style, it is not on the menu.
This is exactly what amazes me. It is so much like McDonalds yet people say it is so different. What is even more amazing is that a guy that seems to be so heath-conscious and a body builder is saying it. Consistent with the basic pattern that seems to follow the In & Out burger phenomenon..........just amazes me :shocked028: :shocked003: :shocked028: I am floored.......dumbfounded..........speechless............utterly baffled by this.
a good burger is supposed to be greasy, clogging the arteries bad for you. in n out tastes good. i am not sure what you are talking about. it is not about being healthy. the opposite actually. i eat those on cheat days. mcdonalds tastes like crap. animal style 3x3 is like greasy heaven.
it seems like you are trying to grade it on a healthy level. i don't eat fast food burgers for healthy food. no need to. we have so much to choose from for that. it also doesn't appear that you have tried a 2x4 animal style at in n out.

Effing amazing! You have no idea how much into fast food you have to be to think In & Out burger is that different than McDonalds. You are an official addict junkie fast food meth head. There can be no other explanation for such a perception. Clinically psycho!
That's hilarious. .......I hope the "Clinically psycho" comment was made in jest.
Does anyone really have to wonder?

What about this, "You are an official addict junkie fast food meth head."???

Some people seem to miss the point that these LRs are supposed to be fun entertainment. The "crazy" emoticon is used all of the time on this forum. Of course it was in jest........even if you are in fact clinically psycho (a reason to wonder?), I could not know that and would have no way to deliberately offend you over the personal challenges in your life.

The best burgers must be made of flat steak and short rib of beef, cubed, chilled, lightly ground & pan fried... Period.

I am not stating the definition of a fast food restaurant. I am not even saying one tastes better or worse than the other. Somewhere some items on different fast food menus probably taste good. I am saying that McDonalds and In & Out Burger are similar to one another. In & Out Burger even uses the original McDonalds color scheme. It is a direct reference intended to communicate the message that one is The Alternative to the other.

I have tried I&O B a couple of times under different circumstances, but both times with enthusiastic encouragement from the people I have been with. To me the similarities are obvious. The absence of grease does not make the similarities unrecognizable. I do not like either, regardless.

it is not the taste that is similar? because that is all that i am talking about. the in n out doesn't taste anything like mcdonalds burgers. as far as whatever similarities there may be in arketing, or target audience or whatever, that is irrelevant to what the burger tastes like, and i eat the burger because it tastes good. did you try the animal style?

I don't recall what I tried. Could have been that mainly because the people I have been with advised me on what to order and in their shoes I would pick something that was a good bridge. But I don't remember what I had beyond a burger, fries and drink.

The reason I find this so fascinating is that the similarity is with McDonalds not any other fast food restaurant. It sort of takes a fast food mentality to go to an In&Out Burger. When I am hungry, fast food does not come up on the radar. The rare time I hit a Wendy's is when I am desperate. I acknowledge this is my perspective and I cannot see from yours, I do not know what your daily lifestyle includes, I do not know how much you can plan for meals, etc. I feel sick most of the time after eating at all of the fast food restaurants I know of and it is a matter of degree which determines where I will never go again. I see In&Out as a clean McDonalds and the people who eat there usually are McDonalds converts. McDonalds is the restaurant most often brought up when talking about In&Out Burger, at least in my experiences. I am not a candidate for conversion as I do not eat at any fast food restaurants.........unless you consider someone eating at a Wendy's once or twice every other year and only if desperate a regular patron.

I've eaten at a couple of In & Outs when I've been traveling and had to accommodate co-workers. I didn't notice a difference in quality or taste from other chains, but I definitely did notice the marketing for milk shakes. I have always been a milk shake fan, so with I&O I have a very strong temptation to really drive the calorie count up. I avoid that chain just to avoid the milk shake temptation.

i still don't see how in n out is similar in taste to mcdonalds. i think you misunderstand the whole point what it is for. people don't treat it as fast food. takes 20-30 minutes to get it most lunch and dinner times. so i don't think it is a fast food mentality that it takes to go there. i don't eat fast food and i eat in n out on the occasions where i want to cheat with the tastiest, but worst for you foods. i eat sushi most days as my fast food. as far as them targeting people who go to mcdonalds, that is just marketing, although they target all people who eat at places like that. there is no conversion necessary either. people can't afford the time it takes to eat at in n out, so replacing their regular fast food is not an option. most people i know who go to in n out go there occasionally, and they don't normally frequent fast food restaurants. now, your experience that people bring up mcdonalds when talking about in n out, obviously it has created an association in your mind, but i am not sure how valid that is. from all this you may actually deduce that i am a big supporter of in n out. hardly. i go there 1 or 2 times a year tops. i do enjoy it very much on those occasions, as do the dogs. i can't speak for the fries, i don;t eat fries, or milk shakes for that matter. i did get taken back by your reaction to in n out, i still can not figure out why you reacted like that, or how it tastes like mcdonalds.

Guys,
We have In and Out in Dallas, We have Carls Jr (Hardees) We have a local chain Whataburger. Whataburger has the best flavor.IMO
I don't get the In and Out hype there frys suck too.
If I am going to eat bad I am going to a few burger joints I know around town.
I would eat In and Out or Whataburger only by default. McDonalds, BK,Wendy's is out. I will stop a 7-11 or Quik Trip and pickup a hot dog if I am in a hurry.
I hadn't ate at McDonalds since I watched the movie super size me. I have a personal beef against Hardees so Carls Jr. is out.

i have a beef with carl's junior. i actually knew carl karcher, he was an ass. my then girlfriend worked on their add campaigns. he demanded to have a line in every commercial. other than doing illegal insider trading, he actively supported anti-women's right movements. as far as in n out fries, i don't know about them, nor about any other fries. fries are the worst thing you could ever eat. deep fried carbs. no nutritional value whatsoever. i'll go eat a baked potato and a grilled chicken breast at wendy's though. in n out is one of few places where one can not get anything even halfway healthy.

Louis,

I worked for Hardees as a manager, almost 30 years ago now when they tried to bully there way into the Texas market. They were asses.
Tried to walk a tightrope on labor laws treated there employees badly.
The list goes on....If anyone questioned what they did they were out.
They lasted in Texas about 4 -5 years before they left. The Texas stores never got out of the red.
They are doing the same thing again using the Carl's Jr name. Cause Hardees in Texas has a bad name All I can say is good luck.
I have not walked into a Hardees or Carl's Jr. since I left them.

I am from the south i was raised to eat every thing fried.
In and Out fries stink But I usually won't buy fries anyway.

The scene in Super Size Me when he put a package of McDonald's fries in a jar and left it on the shelf for a year and they looked just like they did when he put them in the jar still haunts me when I think about french fries.
I did have sweet potato fries with my hamburger at the restaurant I ate last Friday.
