looking for a g&l with a tremolo. an asat deluxe with a trem would do as well. i'd prefer the comanche, but i am waiting to hear back on the speacs and if the seller has the plain white pickguard. i will not buy a pearl guard guitar, and guards for the z pups are not abundant. i hate tort too, but the guard on the s-500 is probably easier to replace.

If that S-500 is a Mahogany Special Build, you'd have the same guitar as me (I, too, got mine indirectly from someone on this forum). You won't lack for tone if you go the cheaper route.

The first S-500 (with the maple board) looks like an early one. I usually prefer solid color finishes to sunbursts, but this one looks very nice. My mahogany '82 sounds and feels amazing. Do you know whether this is a 'hog or an ash body?

Just checked the Blue book value and given that it has a figured top, it is not that far off if in mint condition ($1,645-$1765). It allowed a mark-up of 40-50% when a Comanche has a figured top versus the plain version! If the condition is just excellent, the price is about 2/3 of what I stated above. Give you an indication what the going rate is amongst people who deal in guitars.

Do you like the sound of the Comanche? I checked out PGS youtube video on the Comanche and decided it just wasn't for me. Stuck with the S500. You have some tough choices there.

i want to try one for myself. i don't go by youtube vids, as the players demonstrating have too much influence on the sound of the guitar. i need to see how it works for me.

I think you would like it Louis. It doesn't have that vintage sound like the Legacy, and the S-500 gets pretty close as well, but it isn't too far off. I played a Tribute Comanche and it sounded great. And it has the switch that allows you to split the bridge and neck pickups, same as the S-500, which allows for a very diverse range of tones. The USA version you're looking at will sound great, I'm certain of that. Good luck!

Louis, I have the Commanche knock off, an ASAT Z3 in a semi hollow that I swear by. Those pickups are an acquired taste, or learning curve in dialing in, but that sucker is played a lot for me. Had it out last night for about an hour. Ya gotta understand (I am sure you do) going noiseless p-ups yer in a different world, but Leo pulled some magic here. Price as always is negotiable. This is overpriced to me, but I think everything music related is overpriced after missing a 69 tele for $400 in 1993!! Work 'em on the price or find one at a better price but get one, those are killer guitars!!

100% agree with Sam about the Z-coils.
I also find their E-D/G-E coils' "stagger" does something positive to response up the fingerboard, which suits the differing (wound / plain) string types too. And, somewhat obviously, some Tele - type benefits at the back pickup.
And I seriously like the sound of them in series with one another, particularly middle-and-bridge. But if you're minded to do this, be EXTREMELY careful about lifting the ground at the pickup: DON'T lift the covers off!!! Will Ray once sympathised with my mistake in doing this, seems that between us we wrecked 4 pups in about half an hour total. The covers seem to be put on when the wax is still warm.... But the ground can be unsoldered from the baseplate and then sleeved off, and the baseplate rewired to ground independently of the coils. Should never need to lift ground on the bridge pup, just the other two. I have a "blower" toggle that takes me to middle + bridge in series; the most single-coil-voiced BIG sound.
But all these G&L's you're looking at are really good looking!

well, none of these panned out. 2 of them have not contacted me back after repeated inquiries, even though the ad has been renewed.
there are 2 mid 90's legacys up for trade on cl right now. one for amp the other for pedals possibly. will see what happens.
