Getting more tones out of my guitars, first up: ASAT Special

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Getting more tones out of my guitars, first up: ASAT Special

Post by Emir »

Hi guys,

So I got myself some Fender 5-way super switches recently and have been thinking about rewiring my beloved ASAT Special to maximize the tonal possibilities of this awesome guitar. The big MFD singles are easily my favourite single coils ever.

I found this diagram from phostenix's (a very kind gentleman who makes some excellent youtube videos as well) wiring diagrams page and have been thinking of giving it a go on the ASAT:

Anybody tried something similar? Do you have any other suggestions? If you have attempted this on your mfd-equipped asat special, I would appreciate a heads-up on the cap and resistor values

Thanks!

Hi Emir,

To my knowledge, the only model with a Super Switch ever released by G&L is the JD-5 with the following configuration: 1-neck, 2-neck with parallel 0.0022μF capacitor for deeper tone, 3-neck & bridge, 4-neck and bridge out-of-phase, and 5-bridge. This is how Jerry Donahue has his Tele wired up. But he uses different pups too, namely a strat pickup in the neck (or a Legacy pup in the case of the JD-5) and a Seymour Duncan APTL-3JD in the bridge.

I can advice you to build an outboard breadboard first where you can easily swap in and out caps and resistors until you have the sounds and variation that you like before you solder everything together in a compact way.

Hope this helps,

- Jos

give it a shot. no harm to try. phostenix is indeed a very nice guy, he helped me withg wiring my strats with a superswitch. i have the 2 and 4 position out of the tone circuit, and still have the fezz parka mod and 7 sound mod on the guitar. if you have some different switching in mind, he'll design it for you.

I effectively did that with a 4 way and a DPDT, except I also get pickups in series out of phase as an option. I like that one as it is about standard output, no drop for out of phase.

Excellent advice guys, I guess the soldering iron will be hot this weekend. I will report with results (who knows, maybe even clips, but I'm a woeful player on most days) :)
