I want to trade out the plastic nut on my ASAT, and noticed that the string spacing is 1 11/16". I haven't seen any ready-made nuts available with that spacing. I'll probably go with ebony or graphite if I can locate one with the right specs. Anybody know a supplier?

If your ASAT is new, it would be a bone nut. If it is an older model it would be plastic. G&L offers a Graph-Tech nut as an option. Although I don't see it offered in the online store, perhaps you can order one from the factory.

Does that mean the string spacing on the ASAT nut is unique?
All I see is 1 3/8 for factory-made nuts.

Your ASAT must have been ordered with a Wide "C" neck option, as that is the only neck profile that is 1 11/16" wide at the nut. Have you tried contacting the factory?

you do not want a ready made nut. go to a good tech and get it done right.

Re: Nut String Spacing ASAT Special
I've tried and tried to get my ASAT Special to play nice with my slightly heavier strings to no avail, and I've realized the nut is done for, all the strings line up fine and well but the G has to be lifted way above all others and stick out like a sore thumb to avoid fretting out on the first fret. Besides dimensions which I intend to take tonight, do you have any recommendation as to which specific Graphtech I should go for? Please bear in mind a "guitar tech" is something that does not exist here, so I'll have to order two and do my best. Thanks!

that is tough. you need to get about 5 or 6 and by the end you can get a halfway decent nut done. after about 20, you'll get pretty good. i would use some baking soda in the nut slot and harden it with super glue. on regular nuts it gets as hard as the original material. do little at a time. if you use too much, a nut file will take care of it. or contact g&l, tell them what neck and see if they can send you a properly cut one. the premade ones will not fit as well as fixing your existing one. otoh, not having a tech, you probably never had the pleasure of playing a well set up guitar, you might not be able to tell the difference. i am not trying to be rude, or discourage you, just telling you the reality of it.Emir wrote:I've tried and tried to get my ASAT Special to play nice with my slightly heavier strings to no avail, and I've realized the nut is done for, all the strings line up fine and well but the G has to be lifted way above all others and stick out like a sore thumb to avoid fretting out on the first fret. Thanks for the tips louis I'll look into my options. As is it's damn near unplayable sadly. I'll try the baking soda and super glue trick but I'll also shoot G&L an email.

Is the nut preparation anything someone (a tech?) can do remotely then send it to Emir to install on his guitar?
Or is it necessary to have the guitar in possession when doing this?

having the guitar certainly helps. but if it is still at g&l specs, they know how deep the nut slot is, the height of the frets, the shape of the slot so on. as far as having a random tech to make one, they would need all such measurements and duplicate a guitar neck like that, and cut the nut, take it out and send it.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Is the nut preparation anything someone (a tech?) can do remotely then send it to Emir to install on his guitar?
