S-500 as my next guitar ?

Post by supereiv »

Hello !
I'm seriously thinking about an S-500 as my next guitar, the legacy special I have is very nice, but I feel the sound I get with my ASAT Classic Custom is much more convenient for me. I think it's not only the hardware difference between the two guitars, I believe the MFD's response is what I need, hence the desire for an S-500 ! You know... That strong midrange , incredible reaction to pick attack and to slight changes of the vol control. I mean, I know that's comparing apples to oranges, but I think I can tell what the pickups bring. I need a strat-style guitar, and I love MFD (especially with my Boogie !), so can someone tell me how the S-500 pickups compare to the asat's ?
Maybe an ASAT Classic S would do the job ? I can live without a trem :D

If you have a Legacy Special it wouldn't be that much different going to an S500, they both have higher output pickups and are fatter in tone than a Legacy with alnicos. In fact I have a set of Dual Blades from a Legacy Special ready to go into an S500 Deluxe, I need to go noise free with that guitar as it's not getting much playtime, a combination of overdrive and CFL light bulbs is not good.

An ASAT Classic S would be a nice combination of ASAT and S500.

I totally agree with Southpaw.... Comparing the Special to a s-500 is more like apples to apples. They are certainly going to be in the same ballpark.

I get similar tones with all of the MFD's - either with the bluesboy, s500 and various specials. Even the MFD humbuckers in my 25th anniversary have a similar vibe to them. Have fun looking!

Thanks for the input guys.
I was more talking about frequency response than output. The MFD definitely don't sound like an alnico traditional pickup, but the gotoh don't have, at least to my ears and through my rig, the same frequency response as the MFD, as well as reaction to subtle changes in dynamic..
the more I play the MFD, the less I like the blades.

Edit : maybe is it just a trick of my mad brain to justify another G&L

If you have the typical Legacy/S-500 pickguard screw pattern, I have an S-500 pickguard loaded with MFDs that I'd be willing to part with, and I think you could easily swap it out with the Legacy guard. For some reason I don't seem to have the front photo, but here's a shot from the back. Just PM me if interested:

Ha! I just noticed that you're in Paris. I'll be in Paris in May, but that would be a bit of a wait.

Thank you, I might be very interested, but, I understand that older legacy pickguard (mine is a 3 bolts 93 model) hasn't the same screw pattern/dimensions than the newer one ; at least they're different on the chandler guitar's list.
Oh, and may seems right for me ! I have to ask Craig or someone else if they know anything about that change in pickguard dimensions.
BTW, wich colour is your S-500 loaded pickguard ?
