Another day another car related expense. My $641 registration renewal bill came today. I’m finding it hard to be my usual cheery self today.

I'm very surprised with the results of yesterdays poll, with equal numbers of people preferring a fence up the clacker as the Beach Boys!

Lunch was an egg and HP sauce roll with a glass of orange juice and a magic elf chocolate - they're for kids, obviously, and are made from milk chocolate with pop-rocks in it. I find them slightly unpleasant, especially when they pop on their way past your tonsils.

Music things you don’t need.
We played a gig recently at which a duo opened for us. The lead guitarist had this whopping great big flight case that I assumed was for an acoustic guitar. It was actually for his pedals, of which there were only about 6, and cables. Completely superfluous. Why do pedals, which are designed to be trodden on, need a $500 flight case when they’re only ever transported in your car? And those over-priced Pedal-train boards, don’t get me started on them…
Seen anything similarly ridiculous?

Has anyone ever sighted one in a movie or TV show that wasn’t based on a band or live concert footage?

a lot of pedal boards come with the flight case. i have the pedal train pro, flight case and all cast me 150 bucks. while it looks like a 500 dollar flight case, it sure didn't cost that. the board is 32x16" has 18 pedals on it. most people think i am bringing a keyboard to the gig. btw the case helps the pedals to stay put, the knobs stay in place, never have to worry about the settings getting messed up, something that was a major issue with my previous boards. did you ask that guitar player how much the case for the board cost?

I have a Furman SPB6 pedalboard that I squeeze nine pedals on. The newer versions have an SKB type protective case, with wheels and an extending handle--like luggage. But mine is an older version that has a zippered Cordura nylon case, and so the newer version is thus much heavier. Protective enough for the car, but I wouldn't dare fly with a soft case like that.

Pedalboards are good things--I built my first one back in 1980. They really simplify set up.

The pedals are tough enough, but the connections and the wires are comparitively fragile--so at least a little bit of protection is a good idea.

Never seen a G&L except in some rare concert footage. Actually, I've never seen someone playin' a G&L here in france, be it on TV or on real stage ! They don't know what they're missing
I suspect being the only one in France playing an ASAT Classic Custom. Each time I play it with other guys, nobody seems to notice, but after one song, there's always someone staring at the headstock of my guitar .

Pedalboards... mh, I have no pedalboard at the moment, but I plan to buy one soon, exactly for the same reasons as Louis stated in his previous post.

The most ridiculous thing I saw, was a guy playing an Heritage H-535 with a boogie triaxis, TC electronic rack, and all that zillion $ stuff, and sounding like a piece of sh... Same with the guys playing stacks in small venue. I could go on and on...

At first i thought the poll was comparing The Beach Boys and Santa!!!! i almost voted for Santa until i read it close and realized it said Santana. I would never vote for that guy!

I have a Warwick Rockcase pedal board - big sturdy and cheap... i like the fact my pedals are protected in the car and at the gig all i need to do is undo the 4 latches and I'm good to go.

The most ridiculous thing i have seen (around the local bar scene) are guys using wireless setups while standing 2 feet in front of their amps Now, i understand if you are playing the O2 but in a club - really? Maybe i am alone on this one, but i think that is one ridiculous piece of gear most guys could do without.

I also have never had a strange G&L sighting, but i am always looking for that headstock profile.

Jamie, you really pay the price for registration. My 93 Olds in Minnesota is $38 plus filing fee per year. I'm thinking I like my Olds better each day.

I am not a pedal guy as such and have been doing mostly bass work this year. I do use the sonic stomp on my bass.

You see a lot of overuse of things that don't fit the venue. I am guilty of always using the wireless, even in practice. I can't tell you how many times I have stepped on my cord and unplugged myself. Running the cord through the belt loop doesn't always prevent this either. This also increases the longevity of the output jack. I end up with a lot of things that I don't need. I have had a new Harmony Man that I really haven't even used. Maybe I need to get rid of it.-- Darwin

a wireless is very useful even on small stages. first, you will not get shocked from bad wiring. if you ever had that happen to you, you'll know why you'd want to avoid that. secondly it gives you the opportunity to go out in the room and listen to the sound from different spots, checking the mix. i almost always use a wireless even on small stages. sometimes i also like to walk around in the crowd while playing and interact with them.

I can relate to you with the car bills, remember a couple months back when I was deciding to buy a new acoustic or repair things on my car? That decision seems to have caught up with me Luckily I can do some of the work myself cutting the bill down from just under $1k to around $500-600. This is just to pass state inspection, I still haven't gotten to the timing belt which will need to be done asap.

Lunch: I had roast pork with couscous from the work cafeteria, pretty good today. That magic elf chocolate does not sound appealing, I'd probably still eat it though since it's chocolate.

Music things you don't need: Those Line 6 Variax guitars. $1400 for a gimmicky "modeling" guitar, no thanks!

Never spotted a G&L in any movies or TV other than the very occasional live performance

Cars are the worst. One of my cars is a '99 Hyundai wagon. I go pay my taxes in person and I always ask, how can I owe a hundred dollar tax on a $50 car? Dave, I feel you pain. I am taking my Honda to the dealer to have a new power steering pump and change the timing belt. That's a nice guitar down the drain. Changing the timing belt on the Hyundai is straight forward, but tedious. On the Accord--nightmarish.

Pedal boards. I use the same Furman board as Bill, but mine is the newer style. The heavy cover looks cool in the catalog, and it is nice for travel, but it's HUGE and I spend a lot of timing hiding it! I currently only have 5 pedals on it am really only use 2. I just leave the others because I feel kinda dumb toting this thing around for 2 pedals--The conditioned on-board power makes it worth the trouble, plus no setup. I think I paid about $280, which seemed like quite a pile. But a top quality A/B/Y was about 200 or so.

Wireless? I like wireless, it's just one less thing to stand on. We use in ear wireless even for practice a lot. It's just easy, and cuts the deafening trap volume in a small room a little.

edit, more car complaints and fixing a couple tense issues.

Yep, you guys are right, George Harrison is the mystery slide guitarist in Leave a Light On. The tenuous link to Leo is that he played it on Rocky, his '61 sonic blue Fender Strat, later painted in psychadelic colours and set up for slide. Rocky is a pre-CBS strat so is technically from the reign of Leo. Rocky is also famous for the solo in Nowhere Man and many of the other lead guitar lines on the Rubber Soul album. John Lennon had a matching '61 sonic blue strat that he also played on the Rubber Soul album and on the Sgt Pepper sessions. Trivia lesson over
