Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
I like the 12" radius and the med. jum. frets myself, as I do quite a bit of bending. I played a vintage 1960 strat for many years and it took me no time at all to adapt to the flatter board. It's really comfy.
I think Fender's Roadworn Series has the big frets on a 7.25" radius neck, FYI. That might be something to check out.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
Note from Steve Grom, Director of Manufacturing, about the Satin finished necks:
The Eastern Rock Maple we buy for neck tends to be very white in color and sometimes
the clear satin finish can almost appear to be non-existent
so i need to choose between:
Vintage Tint Gloss
Light Tint Gloss
Clear Gloss (what is clear gloss?)
What do you recommend?

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
The question is what color are you going to order. I think the Vintage GOT is my favorite and looks especially well with Reds, Cherryburst and some other colors. Some colors look great with the natural gloss which is a very nice choice. Depending on the color you could use a light tint so I think it depends a lot on what color body you are going to order. -- Darwin

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
To me the medium jumbos on a 7.5" finger board make the curve feel much less pronounced than vintage frets. I switch between the 12" and 7.5" without any problems.
As for colour, that's up to you. The full vintage tint (is that's what the old GOT is now called???) can be very yellow. I've seen it described, accurately, as 'Cheetos yellow'. Clear maple necks can look a bit anemic, but given a few years it'll darken.
Clear gloss is exactly what it sounds like - it's (almost) perfectly clear so you only get the colour of the wood, with a glossy (shiny) finish.

depends on what you like. i like the jescar or dunlop 6100 frets. g&l calls the dunlop 6100 medium jumbo. fender calls it jumbo. vintage frets are only for people who play with a death grip, they will play out of tune with the 6100's.dogari wrote:i take:

Do you think G&L will ever offer a 11 11/16 nut with the 7 1/2" radius?
I wanted a 7 1/2" radius on my ASAT but was concerned the 1 5/8" would be too tight on my large hands. My one experience with the smaller nut was on a thin-necked guitar, not sure if that is a good compare or not.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
Lefty, I recently purchased an SC-2 with the 7 1/2 radius and vintage frets. I have several vintage fret instruments and I don't have an issue playing them but they do not wear like a wider fret. If I were to order vintage frets I would order stainless. I have Gretsches and they have vintage fretwire and do wear quickly compared to the others.-- Darwin

g&l does 7 1/2" not 7 1/4". you are hung up on the name of the frets. it is the size that matters. what they call a particular size changes with each company.dogari wrote:i dont know what to do

7.5" is 190mm. 7.25" is 184mm. they both use 6230 for the vintage fretwire. that wears very fast. how long have you been playing guitar?dogari wrote:i mean 7.5

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
dogari,
Are there any dealers around you where you can try these out in a store? The vintage may not be as readily available but you may find that you like what is available and come to a conclusion without having to try all of the options first.
With Belair green I think a light tint clear gloss or no tint natural satin finish maple neck and fretboard is the most beautiful. My personal preference is the natural satin finish. I do not like the feel of the gloss finishes as much. You have to be very careful when choosing the body color with the orange to yellow color of the GOT necks. They can end up looking like a big yellow stick. I think people have a tendency to focus on a part and ignore the whole when it comes to necks. I like the guitar to be visually harmonious and balanced.
This guitar that Guitar Adoptions recently carried is an example of a gem. I also like the birdseye neck or a flamed neck option. On a guitar like this it is like a fine piece of furniture with beautiful wood accents:

No, the USA ASAT Deluxe, USA ASAT Deluxe SH, USA Will Ray Signature models have a 12" radius neck.dogari wrote: When I think about it this Combination is in all the asat model no?

For all other USA ASAT models standard spec is the #1 neck. The Medium Jumbo frets are standard on
all the USA models in current production. On the Tribute ASAT modelsrefer to the specific model for the
neck size. You should also refer to the main G&L website and look at the specs for each model you are
interested in.
Hope this helps.

For me, either of those would be fine, though I do prefer the 12" radius.
The Legacy Rustic has a nitro finish. All other Legacy models have poly.
Once you decide on the options for your order, let us know the full specs.
Hope this helps.

Craig, since you are here..... any future of a 11 11/16 nut with the 7 1/2" radius?lefty_major wrote:Do you think G&L will ever offer a 11 11/16 nut with the 7 1/2" radius?
I wanted a 7 1/2" radius on my ASAT but was concerned the 1 5/8" would be too tight on my large hands. My one experience with the smaller nut was on a thin-necked guitar, not sure if that is a good compare or not.

If I were going to make one change it would be a matching Belair Green headstock. That would be awesome with the vintage tint maple neck. The stainless frets are a good choice for fret life..-- Darwin.

Did you state a fretboard wood?
That will look different if you decide to go with a matching headstock.
To me Belair green headstock looks better with darker fret wood but I would not go with a matching headstock at all if it were my choice.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
I heard back from Steve and here is his reply:Craig wrote:You do mean a 1 11/16" nut, right? (otherwise, you've got HUGH hands)lefty_major wrote:Craig, since you are here..... any future of a 11 11/16 nut with the 7 1/2" radius?lefty_major wrote:Do you think G&L will ever offer a 11 11/16 nut with the 7 1/2" radius?
I wanted a 7 1/2" radius on my ASAT but was concerned the 1 5/8" would be too tight on my large hands. My one experience with the smaller nut was on a thin-necked guitar, not sure if that is a good compare or not.
I will check with the factory and post the reply.
Stay tuned.
Sounds like good news for you.Hi Craig,
Currently we offer as standard in our neck options a #3 Neck that has the 1 11/16" nut width but a 12" fingerboard radius. There is no technical reason we can't do the 7.5" radius, it just something I don't think we have been asked to build in the past. Please check with a G&L dealer who can contact our sales office and get the pricing details on a custom (not on the price list) neck option.
Thanks
Steve Grom
Hope this helps.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
I think necks tend to darken or yellow a little over time but I meant they end up looking like a big yellow stick once the order is produced not after aging. Sometimes people think "I want this or that option" but they do not know how that combination looks. I also think some people focus on a part and ignore the whole and they do not see how some combinations don't really work well together. That's all I was referring to.dogari wrote:doing a custom order but the will be hard rock
the light tint will be more yellow in the future?
dogari
Right out of the gate a GOT neck can look yellow or orange. It works in some cases and it does not in others. The lighter tint would be less dramatic.
In that example guitar I posted is the light tint but you have to consider that the neck of this guitar is a birdseye so there is a greater amount of grain/knot colored wood that affects the overall appearance. You cannot hand select your neck unfortunately but my Legacy has a darker maple neck than my ASAT. They can be very white to light brown but these words are really too vague. My idea of light brown and white wood may not match yours. My personal preference is anything white to brown being superior to anything yellow to orange, especially with a color like Belair green.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
I have the medium jumbo frets in stainless steel on my #3 neck on my asat deluxe. They are great.
Not sure why you want the 7.5, the 12 inch radius is nice.
Aged white knows are cream~!!!

have the #2 neck with Medium Jumbo frets as the standard spec.
You might peruse the G&L Registry. Of the 2011
Legacy's registered, 9 of them have the #2 neck and none of them are listed as having the vintage frets.
You really need to find a dealer with some USA G&Ls to actually try the #1 and #2 necks with the stock Medium Jumbo frets.
And, if they have any with the optional vintage frets, even better.
Where are you located? Perhaps there is a G&LDP member who is close to you and would be willing to let you try their G&L's.
I see nothing wrong with your second option, as long as YOU like the neck and frets.
Hope this helps.

Re: Medium Jumbo Frets on 7.5 radius?
One can argue that it is all a matter of personal opinion. There are as many opinions as the number of people who have ever lived in the world. I think the vintage tint neck clashes with this particular green (Belair green). I think the guitar in the image I posted is as good as a Belair green guitar could be. If your reaction to that guitar is different then there is nothing I can or should do to change your mind. All I can really do is show you what I think is ideal so you can accept some or all of it or reject some or all of it. This way it is just a simple question of "Do I like what I see?" The other thing to consider is the way the neck finish feels. The light tint and GOT will feel identical because they are both a heavier finish. The satin feels like smooth wood as if you actually touch the wood not a layer of varnish. You might like the feeling of one but the look of a different one. I prefer the wood feeling. I also like the look of it so, for me, there is no conflict. Both of my guitars have the satin neck.dogari wrote:The last question is about the neck finish

I posted a picture of a guitar with the light tint maple neck and fretboard. The hard rock maple (non-birdseye) necks vary so much they can be exactly like this example you see in the guitar I have posted but they can be darker and lighter. The woods used in G&L necks are not all exactly the same color in their natural (raw) condition. The tint homogenizes the wood color to some extent. The main difference between the example guitar with birdseye and a hard rock maple neck is the grain pattern not the color. You need to realize that we could post 10 examples of natural hard rock maple necks and there would be a great difference between them. On the other hand, 10 examples of a light tint neck would show less variance because the tint brings them all closer to the same color. The tint seems to make the color more consistent whereas the satin will show a greater range of variances because the satin is so close to the natural raw wood.dogari wrote:if i dont see picture with hard rock maple with maple fingerborad with light tint finish I will not have the option to decide
