Happy Black Friday.
Did you camp out?
One music store had a Black Friday special. First customer gets a Broadcaster for $500.
Lunch
------
Chopped ginger from China and onions cooked till brown over sesame oil.
Add Lingcod, spices and some Chinese hot sauce.
Cooked to a boil.
Is everything from China?
Lingcod is very good, if you cook it right. When you do catch it, cook it first, it doesn't freeze well.
Unlike Rockfish that can last 9 months in the freezer.
G&L topic
---------
Tone pots.
What did I do wrong?
I am having extreme difficulties putting on one of the tone knobs on my 30th.
There is no way to balance it so when you rotate the knob it stays perfectly symmetrical hovering the pick guard.
My other guitars don't have this issue, just the one tone control on the 30th.
Here is a pic of the good pots.
Interesting to see that gold wrapped around the pot. Anyways, there is no problem here.
Now lets take a look at the 30th trouble maker.
I measured the height and it sits about 1/8 inch lower than the other pots, which makes me believe that is the root of the problem.
Where is the gold sheet wrapped around the pot like in the other guitar?
Non G&L topic
-------------
What software do you use everyday to help you improve guitar playing?
I can think of 2. Ear master Pro and my DAW (Sonar X1).
Thanks for letting me do the Lunch reports.
I now am on the search looking for a replacement. Any takers?
Peter

There was a period when G&L was out of solid shaft pots. Lead times for the kinds of quantities that a manufacturer orders can be a pain and it doesn't take much to hose it up. Anyway, while the shortage was in effect, they substituted split shaft pots and slid a brass (that gold thing) sleeve over the shaft. Problem solved and move everyone is happy. Unless you're missing a sleeve, then the knob won't mount in a centered fashion because the shaft is actually less than 1/4" in diameter.
So...
Call G&L Service and have them send you the brass sleeve. They might even (probably do) have the solid shaft pots.

Re: Lunch Report Fri 11/25/2011
Thanks Ken,
I'll look inside the knob, maybe it is hiding in there.
Edit: It was hiding in the knob. The screw pressing against the open slot caused an indent on the sleeve. I removed the sleeve, flatten the indent and placed it back on. As long as the screw does not go to the open slot it works fine.

Re: Lunch Report Fri 11/25/2011
Thanks for stepping up this week Peter. Very interesting topics were covered.
Ken is right on about the pots. They should be solid shaft and if they work fine now they may be okay. The sleeve will do the job as long as the screw doesn't go into the groove as you described.
No lunch today. I topped out yesterday.
I don't have any software for improving but I'll bet I could use some!!-- Darwin

Hey Peter,
Thanks for the LR's. Unfortunately I barely find time anymore to contribute to the LR's lately. Alas ....
For lunch we had left-overs from yesterday's meal. In our case no turkey. We had Belgian endive scoops with diced prosciutto crudo and Parmigiano grated cheese as an appetizer, veal scallopine with a sage bread crust and wild mushrooms, wild rice with mushrooms and string beans. Still tasted good as lunch too!
I'm with Ken on your pot shaft.
No software used here unless yiou want to count iTunes used as my player in the music room.

I could use a $500 Broadcaster..... I bought a set of Klein pickups for a slight discount, that is my Black Friday special. Pickup swapping is a dirty habit of mine.
New pot - $5. Solved!
I think Chinese is one of the best, most sophisticated foods out there. What other country has so damn many ingredients, most of which require months and moths to make? Soy sauce is brewed over months, rice wine too and I'm sure all those pastes and stuff have been fermented and/or aged for a while. Bless them.
Like Jos, the only music software for training I use is iTunes. No better way to train your ear than to just learn songs of the record (or mp3).
Great week, Peter. Have a great weekend

I have the same centering problem on my 2005 Legacy. I slipped off the knowbs and lo-and-behold, same thing... Split-shaft pots. Should I be giving a call to the fine folks at G&L? After all, my guitar is six years old and purchased secondhand. (And I am not inclined to open up my guitar and swap out pots... Not my thing.

I just want to say "nice week" and "great getting to know you a bit." I have little to actually add to the topics of the day.
Glad (and not at all surprised) you found help here with your tone pot situation. This place is great for this type of issue.
I don't use any software at all in connection with my guitar playing. I sort of play the songs my brother and I have written over the years, in hopes I don't forget them. I'm guessing though that there is software out there that could help me in multitudes of ways.
I did not camp out for Black Friday goods (though if you are serious about the Broadcaster, I may have made an exception). Was this a legitimate promotion?
Finally, I have come to believe that while not everything is from China, some good stuff is - as is lots of bad stuff. I just wish they would quite misappropriating others' intellectual property. They make some good food items as you point out (would life be the same without good sesame oil or fermented soy sauce?). But I cannot think of a single unique modern contribution that they have made (technological or medical advancement, etc.) that they have not stolen from others.
That said, I really do admire the Chinese folks that I have met along the way. They tend to be smart, driven, and family-oriented people. In particular, I am impressed by the way they revere their elders. It's sad the way our Western societies tend to dispose of those who made us and made us who we are. - ed

Thanks for the LR's this week, well done.
Software -
I'll count just a standard web browser as a tool for improvement. Just looking up tabs and lyrics or youtubing a tune to pick up on things can't hurt....
Black Friday -
A promo like "all rarebirds for $500" would probably be enough to motivate me to cue up somewhere.... lol
Pots/Knobs -
I've yet to find a control knob for split-shaft pots that would resemble a stock G&L knob. Any knob with a set screw should be on a solid shaft pot. Split shaft pots will use press-on knobs for the most part.
Nice you found the sleeve for it, you're good to go...
Stay Tuned,
BW

i don't like the way the knobs behave with the sleeves. for setscrew knobs i'll swap it for a solid shaft pot.
as far as software, i use my daw (reaper) and the browser to find ideas. i like the drumm machine in riffworks, you can set it like a human to put fills and such at different rate, doesn't always play the same thing.
