new potentiometer or new cap or both for Legacy Special

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

new potentiometer or new cap or both for Legacy Special

Post by craftyguitarist22 »

My circa 1992? Legacy Special has the second tone knob (for middle pickup) only responding at the VERY last possible turn where all the tone rolls off completely (nothing really happens tone wise until that last bit of the turn on the pot). My question is this most likely the potentiometer or a cap connected to the potentiometer? Thanks!

The potentiometer, I would say. This type of caps do normally not wear out. On the other hand a capacitor costs almost nothing, so to be sure you could buy both. The potentiometer should be a logarithmic type.

Oops, read it again.

The second tone knob is not just the tone control for the middle pickup, it's the bass blend for all pickups, while the first one is the treble blend. So if you roll it off, there should be less of low frequencies, which is indeed rather subtle, but it's there.

Thanks for the reply! I know that G&L's traditionally have the PTB tone and I "assumed" that was the case with my legacy special at first but best I can tell my first tone control without a doubt controls the neck pickup and the second controls the middle pickup. I've tried to hear any change with the 2nd tone knob on the neck (or even Bridge) pickup but it seems to be classic wiring.

OK, so someone changed the wiring, and maybe did wrong, especially when done with that 1 meg Ohm potentiometer, which is normally used for the bass blend.

If you'd like to restore to the originally one, which I find ways more useful, this may help: http://www.glguitars.com/schematics/Leg ... rawing.pdf
