Late Lunch Report Tuesday 11/22 /2011

Post by meowmix »

Sorry, late lunch. I just made it back. Because of this late report I will keep this one short.

A little about me
----------------
I kayak fish off the California coast here. Today's weather and surf was a perfect match to go out again.
Left at 6 am, and just made it back at 3pm.
Here are some shots on the water.

Here are the fish I caught.

Lunch.
----------
I am eating it right now. Turkey again.

The G&L Topic of the day:
--------------------------
I found out why I keep on bumping into the volume knob. The strap was set too high.
Strange, I didn't feel anything odd in picking hand position.
Who plays their guitar set to high? Think John Lennon playing acoustic.
Do you know anyone who does that?

Non-G&L Question
-------------------
Do you have occupation or hobby that dries your hands to almost sand paper?
As you know, I fish. And the salt water will wreak havoc on my skin. My only solution, and it is a very good one,
was to wash my hands after I was done. Rub in Aquaphor Image and put on some Nitrile gloves.
By doing this, the water will not vapor and your hands won't dry out.

Anyone else have skin issues they need to take care of to play guitar?

where in california? i play with the guitar pretty high up. my wrist can't handle playing low. i don't bump into anything though. who said the strap was too high? for you it was? i know some people who have the guitar hanging under their chin. the controls still don't seem to cause a problem.

i get acrylic nails on my thumb and 3 fingers on my right hand for picking classical. i have to put a coat of clear every few days to keep the water out from under the acrylic. every 2 weeks i get a fill.
if my hand is dry, i use a lotion by a company called pelle cinque called dolce me. works wonders. if it is really bad i use a cracked heel softener cream, very potent.

I was around when the British Invasion happened. Back then many of the guitar players have their guitars up high on their body. I'm guessing that it is easier to finger Chuck Berry-like rock riffs. Take for example the riff in "I Feel Fine," it is easier to play it if my hand is turned all the way around so that it is almost over the fretboard. That is easier to do with the guitar up high than with it low. I wear my guitar where I pick at belly button level. I can play the "I Feel Fine" OK when I sitting down, but not so well standing up.

My skin sometimes gets dry and itchy in the winter. My doctor recommended Cetaphil, which I assume is similar to your Aquaphor.

What kind of fish is that? I enjoy fishing and wish I had the time to do more of it.

I don't play with the guitar strap set high. I only play at home, so I very seldom use a strap.

I work on cars for a living. I use O'Keeffe's, Working Hands hand cream. It works well and you don't have to use a lot of it.

Peter, great pictures and nice catch. Are you using a filter on the camera or is the water really that blue? First time I have seen fish in a lunch report. I thought you were going to say that you had a shore lunch!

I play my guitar higher up rather than low. I only have one guitar which I sometimes bump the volume on and it is my PRS Johnny Hiland. I also play bass at what most would consider normal level.

We have dry cold winters and I have had problems with the bottoms of my feet cracking and it can be painful. I have tried Corn Huskers, Udder Cream, and the only one that has worked well for me is a product called Heel Rescue. I have used it for three years and have not had a crack since I started using it. I also gets applied to my hands in the process of preparing my feet. Like any snake oil, if it works, use it.-- Darwin

Let me get this: You are out on the beautiful water, catching a bunch of edible fish, Thanksgiving is in a couple of days, and your lunch is turkey? Hmmmmm. At least it's not cat food! ;+)

Hey, will you take me with you next time you go out? I love to fish. I have a lake in my back yard. I have kayaks and a canoe. You can come here. The lake features Largemouth bass, Crappie, Yellow Perch, Tiger Muskie, catfish and various other panfish. Because of my wife's sensibilities, I'm strictly catch and release these days. What do you do with your catch? I'll try to post some lake and/or fish photos later, when I get on the other computer where the images are. Need to upload them, etc. You know the drill.

Dry hands? Yeah, as I've gotten older (okay, old), I find that my hands and fingers get dry and crack in the cold dry air of Winter. The product you recommend is one of the best I've tried, actually. I tend to need to use Nu-Skin (sp) to seal the cracks first. Not surprisingly, I tend to play less guitar in winter....

As to how low I go, you have to ask my wife ;+). But objectively, I'm kind of middle of the road when it comes to where the axe hangs. I don't see how the dudes with their guitars at their knees play at all. Too high up is just as bad.

What was I saying? - ed

Sounds like a great day on the water to me!

Guitar height varies between electric and acoustic. plugged in hangs lower but not Ramones low and acoustic is a little higher. I seem to take it a little higher for finger picking when not sitting on a stool for that playing. I have not had issues with the layout of G&L guitars and height.

Will definately try the hand lotion. lot of outside activities and in the heat of the south the hands dry out quickly so i grab whatever my wife has around but will give Aquaphor a chance.

Hey everyone.

I originally had a lunch report that was 90% complete, but it required some thought to finish it up.
Being so late to lunch, I just threw things together with no so much thought. :?

Interesting to see we all have different products to work with our dry hands. Like Darwin said, if the snake oil works....

Louis

We fish north of Santa Barbara.
No one told me I was playing too high. I just did some experimentation. Lowering it an inch made all the difference.

Thanks for the info on the classical style playing. I never knew that.

Kit

Thanks for the info on Cetaphil, I will have to look into that.

It is a California Sheep head.
http://glumacefishing.com/fishinfo/salt ... sheephead/

Those fish are “protogynous hermaphrodite”. Does that word change how you feel about the fish?

Darwin
--------
Water was unexpectedly clear. I mean it had about 20ft visibility, which is odd since we just had a storm come through. The water is that blue. Air temp this morning was 38. 38! And we are going to get wet.

After coming home, grabbing a bite to eat and posting the lunch report. I immediately went to sleep. zzzzzz
No time to clean or eat the fish, they are still in the cooler. Clean them tomorrow.

We did well today. Limit of Rock fish, limit of lings, and 1 big fat sheep head. I take it all home and plan it eat it all.

I spent my lunchtime getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist's.

No lunch to speak of but at least Darwin could be interested in dinner, a cold one Fosters Lager (blue/gold can) and quesadillas. (hmm this forum spell checker doesn't know spanish food).

BTW, blue water in a photo and in person is often a direct influence of the sky not so much the water itself. The water could be murky but appear very blue if the atmosphere is right.

I wear my guitar at about belt line probably on the low side of average. But this all depends on body proportion and weight. I am surprised it is the Johnny Hiland that Darwin has a little problem with. Johnny wears his very high. I would actually prefer mine higher but my arms and wrists get sore. It took getting used to lower but overall it was the best compromise. I have a friend who is a superb guitarist and very versatile. Unfortunately he developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from playing guitar and has to limit himself. It is a real burden on his career as a professional musician. I have played with a drummer who suffered from exceptional fatigue after a few songs. We would have to take many breaks. It has an impact on the all around vibe effecting both players and the audience.

I have not heard of kayak fishing. I imagine American Indians fishing with a canoe but regular guys with poles is new to me. I am assuming you use poles and not spears. Nice catch regardless.

My limited experience with ocean fishing was one of being seasick within the first 45 minutes of a 2 hr out 4 hour fishing and 2 hr back day when I was in my early twenties. I was responsible for the largest fish caught that day. We had just stopped and everyone was moving out from inside the cabin to the deck when I barfed over the side of the boat. It attracted the wining ling cod. The winning fisherman thanked me and did not seem to care at all that the fish he would be eating had shared a meal with me. My friend was also seasick. We had made the mistake of staying up late and eating too much the night before. At one point during the trip we were laughing at out misery when the deck hand, or whatever his title was, shouted down into the cabin "No puking in the cabin!" He seemed to like us though. Later on the way back to shore when he was cleaning up the day's catch he made sure that everyone that went out brought something back. So those who caught over the limit tossed the extra into a pile and it was divided amongst the losers like us. We ended up with more fish that anyone. I felt bad but I recall one man who showed his disapproval who also was very kind to us. He and his wife fished regularly and had brought fried chicken they had made and they shared it with us once we were feeling better. My friend has continued fishing everywhere including flying to Alaska. I was only going along to try it out with is encouragement. I have never enjoyed fishing and have not fished since this friend relocated to Washington state.

I wear my acoustics fairly high, though lower than the pics I see of Lennon and the J-160E. The Legacys sit around my belt buckle, about the same place I wear most of my Les Pauls. I tend to wear the Les Paul Supremes a little higher; I think it's due to the extra thickness the Supreme body has from the maple cap on the back. Same with the ES-335--it just feels better higher.

Unfortunately, I have a thick body, too!

Cetaphil is pretty good for dry skin--use it on my beard, especially in the winter when my skin gets dry--and on my elbows.

I have three favorite hand creams. Rich Moisture Hand Cream from Avon is one of the best. I've used it for years; and I'm down to my last tube. My mother was an Avon Lady for many years.

A potter friend turned me on to using Neutrogena Norweigian Formula Hand Cream. It is very good when your hands are dry from water exposure. And the Avon Silicon Glove is very similar to the Neutrogena, and I've had really good experience with it as well.
