what is this ASAT colour called?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

what is this ASAT colour called?

Post by oneeyedog »

probably a bit of a dumb question, but can anyone tell me the correct term for this colour of asat? from the newest spec sheets it seems nearest to butterscotch blonde but maybe the age causes the faded look? Any info would be apreciated, cheers... john

The Blondes are transparent. Can you see wood grain?

This could be a Vintage White that has yellowed.

The incandescent lighting in the picture is misleading.

Just a guess.

I brought the image into Photoshop and made some adjustments.

It is Vintage White which some have described as 'banana pudding" in hue.

Except Vintage White was not an official color until the 2001 G&L Catalog.
I would guess your ASAT to be built in '86 or '87. What's the serial number?

I believe that the color is likely White which has aged to this hue and now appears to be similar to
Vintage White.

Could it be a "one-off" Vintage White finished ASAT? Yes, as the factory was known to experiment
with different finishes.

No matter what color it is, yours is a fine example of a great Leo-era ASAT.

Please do register your ASAT in our G&L Registry.

Hope this helps.

My "white" Skyhawk from that period has the same butter/banana color. I love it. There's nothing that comes close to that shade.

My 91' Asat classic has exactly the same colour, got it in 93-94 and it had that shade already then.
I always referred to it as "Butterscotch blonde"

Unless it's a test color, Butterscotch Blonde (transparent Premier finish) was not available until
the late '90s (98 or 99). The first G&L catalog having this finish is 2001. Here's the page:

It is likely a 1987 build.

Hope this helps.

Craig, There is too much Yellow for any of the whites on that chart.
Was there a different type "blond" or maybe just blond during that time?
Here is from Fenders colour chart.

http://www.fender.com/support/colorchar ... te&color=8

I think over time it will get close to this.

remember colors darken, and white yellows with age, considerably.

That is not entirely true. Ultraviolet radiation makes it fade and oxidation
and dirt makes it darker.

This one is not darkening, It is 100% definately fading.

This is exactly what most of the mid-80s G&L white finishes look like these days. My "white" Skyhawk is identical, and I've seen it on ASATs as well.

Lazer, are you referring to the guitar in the photo or your '91 ASAT Classic?

when white fades to yellow, i call that darker. i was only referring to white in this example as "darkening".

Everybody is correct.

Aging includes fading, oxidation and tarnishing.

Fading is generally losing intensity of the original color which may even lead to thinning of opacity.

Tarnishing will actually alter the tint of the original color. White will yellow, for instance.

But I am most correct stating this is "vintage Leo white"........just joking. :happy0007:

There was and still is a "Blonde" which is also a transparent finish. See the color chart I
posted. It next to the Butterscotch Bonde.

Care to post a photo of your '91 ASAT?

The photo of oneeyedog's ASAT is neither of those colors, otherwise you would see the wood grain show through.

Hope this helps.

This is a Blonde finish. The ASAT Classic Signature model came in Ash (Natural), Blonde, Cherryburst and Black.
Here's the page which shows this model on the 1990 Suggested Retail Price List (I just added this price list to the Gallery).

Image

Greg Gagliano also has a picture of a 1988 ASAT Signature with the Blonde finish in his G&L webpages.

The finish on oneeyedog's ASAT is not the same finish as this one.

Hope this helps.

The pickguard is a white powdercoated aluminum pickguard. You might check with Wayne Richman (aka Thumbs).
His website is Tone-Guard, and the url is http://www.tone-guard.com/. He supplied G&L with the black powdercoated
pickguards for the C.L.F. (Clarence Leo Fender) Centennial models. I'm quite sure that Chandler (G&L's supplier) does
not carry the old metal pickguards for G&L's.

Hope this helps.

If you are wanting a white plastic pickguard email them at Chandler. If they make one it is likely they will need the original guard or at least a very good trace.

Craig,

I this blonde an opaque finish? I do not see grain in either of the two guitars identified as having this blonde finish.

Thanks Craig,

That means that a Blonde in the early days was quite different...
Glad we could come to a conclusion.

Michael, if You look up close there is a miniscule hint of grain, but I wouldn't call it transparent...
