Strings for the Legacy
A friend recommended John Pearse phospher bronze wound strings for my acoustic guitar.
Wow - what a difference. They make the guitar sound so much better.
I was wondering if anyone had a favorite brand of strings they use
on their Legacy.

Re: Strings for the Legacy
I'm using DR pure blues 10's on all my electrics (and DR sunbeams on my L-1000)....I don't have a Legacy any more, but most of what I play is with single coils .
Thanks for the tip on the John Pearse strings....I've yet to find acoustic strings that are good enough
to remember what they were when it comes time to change them ( my acoustics tend to have the same strings alot longer than the electrics).

Re: Strings for the Legacy
the dr pure blues are so inconsistent, i can't stand them. there is at least 1 bad string in each package. they can't intonate, and the sizing is totally off. they are 2-3 thousands +/- on the wound strings. my guitar tech will not put those on a guitar if someone wants those installed. dr has sent me boxes of replacements, but the issues remained.Elwood wrote:I'm using DR pure blues 10's on all my electrics (and DR sunbeams on my L-1000)....I don't have a Legacy any more, but most of what I play is with single coils .

Good to know about those issues...I haven't noticed any problems, even intonating with a conn.
I will have to the curt magnins....maybe I'm in for a treat.

Re: Strings for the Legacy
Thanks Louis,
I just ordered a set of Curt Mangan Pure Nickel online and will give them a try.
I'm also open to other suggestions if others have favorites too.

Re: Strings for the Legacy
I'm about to order some too.
I'm intrigued by the line :
" were used on most guitars in the 50's and 60's."
...sounds like a good match for the 50's - 60's JBLs I'm falling in love with.
thanks again louis and jweb for the conversation starter,

Re: Strings for the Legacy
On my G&L guitars with the DF Vibrato, I use the Fender Super Bullet strings in 9-42 gauge. I think the bullet end really does help with tuning stability.
I pretty much use D'Addario for every thing else.
Les Pauls get the XL sets in either 10-46 or 9-46. The Music Man Sabres get 9-42s, as do the Ibanez GR-520 Ghostriders and the AS-120 Artstar. The 335 also gets 10-46 D'Addario XL.
The acoustics also get D'Addario EXP or J-Series strings, and might get Light, Medium or Bluegrass gauge, depending on the guitar.
One thing about D'Addario, they are avaliable everywhere, and they have been very consistent for me.

Re: Strings for the Legacy
I gotta say thanks Louis for the Curt Mangan recommendation.
I could immediately hear a BIG difference immediately, even before I brought them up to
tune. The overtones are rich and they feel perfect to my fingers.
I'm a happy man, I just ordered more...got a lot of restringing to do now : )
I've yet to fire up the Swart /JBL/Altec rig with the curts, but I can tell already that it'll be sweet.
thx again,
Elwood

Re: Strings for the Legacy
my luthier (and guitar player) thinks these are the best on the planet
http://www.stringsandbeyond.com/pyr-el-nickwnd-rnd.html
round wound the old fashioned way. I like em too, but had a few sets with a dead string in them, bummer.
Not sure about how long they last.

Re: Strings for the Legacy
I no longer have a Legacy, but I have a '95 American Standard strat and an older F-100. I use John Pearse pure nickel wound strings on both. I like a "skinny top, heavy bottom" set, with .010s on top. Pearse was about the only brand I could find that makes that split set with a pure nickel wind. I think they sound great on the strat, I'd expect them to sound great on the Legacy as well. I find that the heavier wound strings sound a little muddy on the F-100, so I want to try some other strings there. I'll probably start with a standard set with pure nickel winding (not a heavy bottom set), but I have a feeling that the F-100 pickups are voiced such that a nickel plated steel winding will sound better than the pure nickel.
I've not heard of the Curt Mangan strings, I'll look into those.
