Story with a NGD ending
Recently my band, The Prairie Oysters, were nominated for an award. The prize money was $10,000. The catch was that we had to attend the awards night which was in Sydney and pay our own way there. We attended, paying for the flights out of about a months worth of gig money. So we get to Sydney and check in to the incredibly nice hotel which the organisation hosting the awards paid for - we're used to sharing bunk beds in cabins and on this trip they provided us each a room of our own, with a super king size bed in it . I didn't even know that size existed!
Fast forward to the evening and the entertainment and we were up against stiff competition. The competition was a gaggle of beautiful young starlets all of whom were not only very talented but had big followings and a string of awards to their names. We are a group of overweight guys with three people we knew in attendance (there were around 500 people there that night). We gave up any hope of winning even before we left, happy in the thought that we might be offered gigs in and around Sydney if we performed well. At the end of the entertainment we were sitting back, half cut and sloppy when they read our name out as the winner. None of us could believe it. We were stunned.
Since the win I've been pondering what to get. I've looked into having a custom made guitar built (we met Allan Tomkins of Tomkins guitars at the show, a cunning move on his behalf!), a custom amplifier or a Gretsch Black Penguin. I had to leave those ideas when I received my tax bill - no return this year - but I still had a bit left for toys.
Which brings us to today. I have just picked up a used Jerry Jones Dolphin Nose guitar. For those unfamiliar with Jerry's work, he made (he retired recently) Danelectro style guitars to an exceedingly high standard in Nashville. When I first picked it up out of the case I knew I was going to buy it, it was one of those moments. It doesn't feel at all flimsy like so many Danelectro's do. Its actually very solid feeling. The neck is a very comfortable C shape, the radius is flat - I'm guessing 10-12". It sounds great, and the pickups do not squeal even with fuzz set to stun. It is set up perfectly, a real credit to the guy I got it from. Incidentally he only used it to record an album - this thing is as 'as new' as it gets. The tuning machines are quality Gotoh units, as is the bridge. It even came with a G&G hardcase, albeit one slightly down-market from the one supplied with G&L's.
The only thing I'll be changing is the strap buttons - they're those god-awful vintage style ones that let go of your strap just when you least expect it. I have a few G&L ones lying around and fit them as soon as I finish typing this. I will also add a pickup selector in place of one of the volume knobs - it currently has a volume for each pickup and a tone which, inexplicably, only works on the bridge. I'll change this to a master volume/tone, tele style. These are very minor grievances. Such is the quality of this guitar that I will be taking it with me on our epic weekend of shows - we play from 10pm-3am Fri/Sat, as well as Sat and Sun afternoon. It'll be trial by fire for this baby!
Without further ado, some picutres!
Look Darwin - a RED lined case!!!!!
There's an adjustable truss rod too - not featured on many Dano's. Quality Gotoh bridge....
which is a string through, rather than a top-loader like most Dano's
Gibson style jack - again, it's a high quality unit that really grabs onto the plug/jack. Bakelite style knobs
Classic headstock, I love the decal. Strangely not many 'boutique' builders have nice decals. Notice how straight the strings are to their tuning post.
And it matches my amp to a T! They actually come from the same shop in Melbourne.

Nice guitar Jamie ... but more importantly congratulations on the win. It was certainly a quality field for the award but a well deserved win to you guys. Ain't it a buzz to find out that folks like what you're doing!
Well done!
cheers, Robbie

Jamie, what a story and congratulations for what must have been a magnificent performance. Sweet justice. Now you guys will get groupies. There was no doubt in my mind when I viewed the video you posted earlier this year that you boys had it. Now you guys are kids compared to me but it is always fun because they don't expect much out of the seasoned dudes, but sometimes they just need to sit back and listen! Can't you turn your winnings into a business investment (Guitar) and deduct it from your taxes? The band is a business!
Great looking JJ. Cool headstock and the lipstick pickups are super cool. The Red case is absolutely a bonus.
Blarg, If i were you boys I would still be celebrating. I will have a cold one for you guys tonight! Congrats again! We are honored to have you on the forum!! -Darwin

This is the new six pack. Generations growing up with processed foods and all, have you looked at the average weight of kids these days? You guys are trim and fit studs.blargfromouterspace wrote:...We are a group of overweight guys....
That is a great story and congratulations on the win.
Nice guitar too. (BTW, I have noticed you photograph guitars like cars in Hot Rod magazine.)

Great story. Congratulations on the award. I really enjoyed that video you posted, and am not surprised at all. But it is always tough going against the pop princesses!

Thanks everyone. Really was a thrill winning. I've never won anything before so to win with such stiff competition and such a big cash prize made up for all the participation "awards" of the past
Maybe....
Honestly, I think we'd prefer roadies!darwinohm wrote:Now you guys will get groupies.

Blarg, That would be wise advice for a guy my age. The roadies would also have to take care of the groupies!-- Darwin

Congratulations on the win. Are the videos going to posted available later perhaps? I'm love to see them!
The JJ guitar is gorgeous especially with the 6 inline head stock.

Congratulations on the award and guitar Jamie! It's rare to hear a story where talent triumphs over image, so thanks for sharing.
You'll have to get a Johnny Cash 'Man In Black' outfit to match the guitar and amp. That's a beautifully retro Dano clone. I love the bakelite knobs.
If you keep winning awards people will be giving you guitars. And the young starlets will be doing your backing vox.
Keep up the good work.

Congrats Jamie! I've always been curious about Dano style guitars. Where do they fall on the sound spectrum?

Re: Story with a NGD ending
In a word twangy. They hang up with telecasters and Gretsch's (think Duane Eddy) on the twang scale. They're essentially hollow so you get a bit of that airiness in the sound, but not as airy as a big Gretsch and they don't punch as hard as a tele, putting them somewhere in between the two. Being made out of masonite limits sustain a bit. The midrange is kind of honky but fits in perfectly with the sound of the guitar. After giving it a good test at this weekends gigs (which were a disaster, but that's another story...) I've decided that an Esquire style 'cocked wah' thing (wire in an extra capacitor on one position of the pickup selector switch for a darker sound) would sound great on this guitar.desertrat07 wrote:Congrats Jamie! This clip perfectly displays the Danelectro sound. He's playing a baritone, but the basic tone is the same, up a fifth.

Still no word on the videos - the post production takes forever so I'd imagine they're still cutting it together. I'll post them here if/when they give us a copy/post stuff somewhere on the web.jwebsmall wrote:Congratulations on the win. Are the videos going to posted available later perhaps? I already have the outfit - I got the guitar to match it. You know me too well!Philby wrote:You'll have to get a Johnny Cash 'Man In Black' outfit to match the guitar and amp. That's a beautifully retro Dano clone. I love the bakelite knobs.

The last few times I saw J.J.Cale perform he was playing a Danelectro. I couldn't find any videos.
