Break /Lunch Report ------> Wednesday October 19,2011
This week and month are going by really fast.
I've got a really busy day today so I won't be
getting into eating much today.
G&L: ASAT Count Down
The first time I picked up and played an ASAT it
was tribute ASAT Special through a Kustom 72 Coupe
running 4 6L6's in the finals and my jaw dropped. I
couldn't believe a guitar could sound so dominant - incredible -
life altering! The only other time I experienced something
similar was standing by a crossing gate when a freight train
came through.
The ASAT has its roots in Leo's Lap Steel guitar particularly
that instrument's pickup that would morph into the bridge
pickup of the 1951 esquire and eventually evolved into the MFD.
While there isn't much interest today (or in yesterday's
lunch time report) in Leo's lap steel ,the first bolt on electric
guitar that sprung from that foundation is still rocking the
planet today 60 years later. Leo's vision was to have a gig
worthy instrument that could replace the brass section of
the then waning big bands of the 1940's. Together with
George Fullerton back in 1949 they conceived (and realized
in 1951) what would ultimately become today's ASAT. Leo's
second guitar designed to replace that first design went on
to become it's own star and what is now the Legacy. But the
ASAT form factor will remain with us as long as pop music is
played on this planet. Plans to retire the first design
were abandoned. The ASAT remains one of the most
expressive and challenging electric guitars to master a
guitarist will ever encounter. Because it is so transparent
to the emotions and skill of its owner it is not surprising
that today's ASAT is powered by 8 production pickup
configurations - more than any other G&L model!
ASAT classic
ASAT classic bluesboy
ASAT classic custom
ASAT classic S (now a production model?)
ASAT special (& special deluxe)
ASAT deluxe
ASAT Z-3
ASAT Korina Jr (P-90's)
Did I miss any? Using G&L's rule of thumb that
60% of the tone of an electric guitar is derived from
it's pickups, 30% from the body and 10% from the
neck taken together with the expressive nuances of the
ASAT platform this gives us an impressive array
of variations of expression/sound for the discerning ear.
If you think about buying an ASAT and that it will
be your last guitar let alone ASAT think again. Don't
say you weren't warned. Seasoned G&L veterans don't
need to read the warning label - they know the magic
of the ASAT.
For the benefit of our visitors perhaps the G&L vets
here can relate their ASAT war stories, why they play the
ASAT, which ASAT's are in their battle axe arsenal, which
ASAT they play for which song, what mods they made
if any and if they have a video or mp3 of their most awesome
ASAT performance perhaps they can share it here so future
recruits can get some kind of idea of how a freight
train can shake the ground.
My favorite ASAT hasn't been built yet.
...
Say what?
...
That is I haven't ordered it yet!
Thought you were going to catch me right!
I'm still saving up. There is a blues boy semi hollow
body at a local dealer with a flame maple top, black
burst with the old fat neck on it that I've had my eye
on. That's going to take some saving and I've been
fussing around with the idea of ordering a classic and
modifying it into a one pickup version with Leo's 1951
wiring scheme. If picking a wife were this difficult
I'd be in big trouble. I've been like the preverbial
donkey that starved to death tied up between a bucket
of oats on his left and a bucket of barley on his right
unable to make up its mind what he wanted to eat
for lunch! I still have time though because I'm still saving
and my Legacy is keeping me from starving to death in the
mean time. And the money I'm saving on my food bill goes
into my music fund. )
Non G&L: Lunch? How can you expect me to think
about lunch when I'm so lathered up planning the
perfect ASAT configuration? If you already have a
garage full ASAT cases then, yes then I can understand
you planning lunch instead of your next ASAT order.
Have a great day! There is an old saying "see Venice and
die". I say if you haven't played an ASAT why bother -
because you never lived!

Hey JW,
Great week, and great topic today! I am a huge ASAT fan... I have a special, special semi-hollow, bluesboy, special deluxe and a 25th anniversary (which is built on the ASAT form factor so i will include it, even though it doesn't say ASAT )
The first custom G&L i ordered was an ASAT special. That was 5 G&L's ago! You hit the nail right on the head, once you have on ASAT you will eventually have multiples. Lately most gigs are a few ASAT's and the SC-2, they can cover pretty much every tone i could ever want. Here is a video i posted a while back in a lunch report, but will share again for those who are new and those who may have missed it.

Oh, and i NEED an ASAT with a bigsby!!!!!
Have a great day

Scott,
Stones, ASAT, Dr. Z. This must be heaven!
Great playing. Thank you for re-posting this video
- love it!
Bigsby? There's the third ASAT I've been dreaming
about also, an ASAT deluxe no top with bigsby that
is demoed on youtube. It's semi hollow with ash
body and top and a clear orange finish.

while i like s-types, t-types are my favorites, and of the ASAT's i have my favorites are the ones with large MFD's or hummer/MFD combo. though i do have a soft spot for Blues Boy's as well. i've posted these pics (kudo's to Jaystrings for his superb photo skills of the BB) before but thought it worthwhile to post them again. the first (and only BBE-era G&L I have) has a great back story (the piece of quilt had been sitting in Leo's office and was going to originally be used on a prototype ASAT that never came to pass), while the second, an ASAT III, is a bit of a rarity and rocks the house. the only ASAT i did own and would like to again is a Trinity (third pic). nothing quite like it and prolly the most versatile and flexible sounding ASAT imho.

That quilt top is unsurpassed!
The ASAT III with DF trem and G&L humbucker bridge
would do it for me! Is that an ebony fingerboard?
Others have said the same thing about the Trinity!

The quilt top has an almost 3-d quality to it and while i'm not a big fan of quilt or tiger tops, this one is truly stellar. And yes, definitely ebony which is my all-time favorite fb wood. nothing feels or plays quite like it imho. same for the first G&L i ever bought. a L1k that's still my #1 bass:

I had a late lunch today after all. Broccoli, brussel sprouts and a Yukon
gold potato oh and a shot of Welch's concord grape juice.
Kind of boring I guess? Perhaps they should have asked me
my dietary habits before nominating me for the Lunch Time
reports. Will this diet help me live a long time? All I
know is it sure feels like it. It just goes to show the
ASAT appeals to diversified audience spanning several
generations now!

ASAT War Story
My favourite ASAT is the SH Bluesboy. It's sounds fit in perfectly with the music I play. I love the twang from the bridge and the sheer warmth from the Seth Lover in the neck. I used it this Saturday night at a country music awards night in Sydney and got a lot of compliments on it from the other guitar players there, most of whom hadn't heard of G&L. It almost didn't make the flight - when I picked the case up it had obviously been dropped onto the tarmac and run over, despite being wrapped in "fragile" tape. The case is cracked and bent but the guitar was (mostly) fine and in tune. This is one of the old ABS plastic shell cases. They're well made! Next on my shopping list is a proper flight case that the airline will be paying for!!! Moral of the story is don't fly with your guitar if you can help it
ASAT Shopping list
Next up for me is a Special. Colour is the hard part.

Ah yes. The ASAT: Gateway Drug to G&L.
My first G&L experience was with an early 90's ASAT Special which I bid on and won rather accidentally (after some beery eBay trolling), thinking I was getting a quality Tele with P-90s in it. It was love at first chord. And proof that idiots sometimes do come out on top!
I no longer have that guitar (sold it to fund an early SC-2), but the good news is that I have the same configuration now with my '86 ASAT. Also have a wonderful, double-bound Bluesboy in the stable. Great guitars both. Lifers. I'd post pictures, but I have no new ones and am tired of posting the old ones - as most folks here probably are. Ha!
Great week you have going. Very glad you found this place and stepped up. Sorry I haven't participated much lately. Just lots going on - life getting in the way. I like your style - though your diet certainly leaves something to be desired ;+) - ed

John, ASATS are addictive. I have had 2 Bluesboys, I have a classic, special, Classic s, and a Bigsby Z-3. I will find the right Bluesboy again but I want one like Jonc posted a pic of today. It is stunning. I figure the SC-2 and F-100 return pretty well rounds it out along with several Legacys.
Blatg, I hope your guitar was untouched but it sounds like it may not have been. was it your Copper one? One of the hazards of a traveling musician.
Ed, you can post porn anytime! We enjoy them many times around.
No war stories here other than the Runestone and that will not change. I wish everything were as peaceful and calming as guitars. It is a good habit to have.-- Darwin

Jamie are there any videos of the Sydney country music awards with you
playing on line yet?
Darwin do you have any videos of gigs with your ASATs or other G&L's?
Ed is Zapcosongs the name of your publishing or record label perhaps?
Do you play in any bands in the D.C. area?

I set up a Delaware corporation twenty years ago with the intention of publishing original songs (my brother and I write, but we are not performing musicians). The company is Zapco, Inc. It stands for Zolt Alternative Publishing Company. Zolt is my last name. Unfortunately, when I had the time to focus on music, I didn't have the money. When I had the money, I didn't have the time. Someday.... - ed

Ed, nice older headstock with bullet rod. What is it. The black Special is really special but I would probably arm wrestle you for that double bound blues boy. Boy is it sweet. That is what I would like except in a double bound quilted maple top in transparent Red!!!!! .
John, unfortunately the few videos that we have I am playing bass. I am primarily a bass player. I am going to figure out how to edit them and post them somewhere!! Time is not in my favor so I may have to speed up a bit.
I have to add one more thing. Someone stopped by yesterday and looked at our wall. In the end he said "if there were one guitar that he could pick it was a Red!!!!!! transparent Tele with a maple cap, chambered with a black pickguard". My transparent Red!!!!! Z-3 was a close second. For what it's worth, I think guys gigging Red guitars do better at the end of the evening if I could remember what I mean!-- Darwin

Hey jwebsmall sorry I couldn't participate that much this week but great work so far.
I missed yesterdays LR but I have to say a G&L lapsteel would be amazingly cool, like if it had a solid body with a neck that was flat enough to be used sitting but with enough of a carve that it could be used with a strap and it would be really interesting if it not only had the saddlelock bridge but maybe a custom wound Z coil.
It would be a niche market but custom made affordable lapsteels made with Leos latest (and last) improvements would definitely be fantastic!
The only ASAT I tried before ordering mine was a tribute SH ASAT classic, it really had the big bridge tone down but I found the neck a little muddy (maybe a tribute SH ASAT classic would make a good candidate for your Esquire idea?) but after trying that one I had a taste for the MFDs and after scores of YT vids I decided to get an ASAT and ordered my ASAT special Deluxe no top and It creates the sound I had been chasing in my head, clear and dominant, meaty and piercing (when it needs to be) awesome both clean dirty and anywhere else in between.

Hi John,
Haven't had much time this week to react to your wonderful LR's. But I cannot refrain from piling on all the kudos to the wonder and marvel that is the ASAT. Wonderful guitars with hardly a bad one among them. And I submit this evidence that I certainly have tried a few. And keep retrying and retrying, etc. etc.
I always though I was an LP man, until a guy by the name of Ron Stoehr, who managed the Zobrist here in Seattle, handed me an orange ASAT Classic. I was completely sold. I still wish I would have bought that particular instrument right there and then but as a young physicist I just couldn't. Indeed, times and fortunes have changed ... And I still play my first (a Butterscotch ASAT Classic) the most but have a 'guitar of the week' to keep them all in rotation. This weeks is my ASAT Deluxe. It is interesting how you can rediscover the peculiarities of each model, most of them wonderful and good but also some that require you to tweak some knobs here and there, when you haven't played a guitar for a while.
I could wish you good luck on your quest for your S/H ASAT Classic Bluesboy but with the quality of G&L's that is almost redundant. Keep us abreast of where you are in the process.

If there isn't one maybe there should be a G.B.L.lys every so often. I nominate this guitar right here for Most Beautiful ASAT Bluesboy, (I would add "ever made" but I have quickly grown to despise the "ever" as it is abused on Youtube and I have been spending far too much time viewing Youtube demos for research.

Re: Break /Lunch Report ------> Wednesday October 19,2011
Yep, the copper one. It didn't escape completely unharmed. What happened is that when the jerk handling the baggage decided to drop it and run over it, the control plate was pushed into the top of the semi-hollow body and has caused a very tiny crack from the rear screw towards the end of the guitar. I could get them to do something about it but to be honest it isn't worth the effort. What's very strange is that when I took it out of it's case there was a quantity of wood chips in there that must have come from inside the guitar. For a while now the control plate has been a bit loose from all the tinkering I've done on it and the jolt caused it to come loose. There are no chunks out of it so I can only assume they were always in the guitar and came out with the good shake it got.darwinohm wrote:Blatg, I hope your guitar was untouched but it sounds like it may not have been. was it your Copper one? No video yet but the entire thing was filmed for TV - I have no idea when/if it will screen. It was quite startling to be in the middle of a solo with a cameraman doing a close up - I felt just like Eddie Van Halen!!!jwebsmall wrote:Jamie are there any videos of the Sydney country music awards with you

I think 3 sevens is a winning hand in 21 - no?yowhatsshakin wrote:Hi John,
Haven't had much time this week to react to your wonderful LR's.

I've long admired your avatar of the ASAT's amongst the palms. But it never dawned on me to count them. One for each day of the week. Is this any way to run a harem?
I too started out playing a short scale, loud with lots of caked on distortion and reverb. That way nobody could tell I couldn't play very well (or what I was playing for that matter). One day a friend asked me have your ever tried playing one of Leo's guitars. I never looked back. I'm still intimidated by the ASAT but one day I'll be good enough to play one in public. I am so impressed however with my G&L humbuckers on my tribute Invader XL and what I heard on the youtube video of the Ascari GTS - I think the Ascari is the only short scale guitar I'd be willing to go back to. In the video they comment on how good the split (single) coil tone is on the Ascari GTS. I found the same thing to be true about my Invader XL - first time I actually found myself playing with split humbuckers. Some day I intend to own a USA Invader.

Hi Ahryn,Ahryn wrote:Hey jwebsmall sorry I couldn't participate that much this week but great work so far.
I've been eyeballing the ASAT special deluxe no tops over on ProGuitarShop for some time now. The videos of that guitar keep haunting me too. I didn't look at your avatar closely before to realize it was the ASAT Special Deluxe no top. I came really close to getting that instead of my Legacy that I bought locally.
