Happy Friday Everybody!
Breakfast.........more coffee.
Lunch...........a raw carrot and one or two oranges.
it's Friday and we are going to exit the week with a song.
Last week's LR host, Bill, received two newly acquired G&L guitars.
Upon hearing Bill's words I came up with a few verses for a song. It needs a melody and a some work.
What do you think? Blues? Country? An opera?
Feel free to pitch in.
Title: NGD
Got to clean off the DNA
bought a used guitar
from a nose pickin' finger picker
on ebay
(Chorus)
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
its speed caught me by surprise
testin' out the neck
thinking Fast Fret
learned it was snot, I do regret
hesitate to clean the neck so fast and mean
my playin's such a breeze
with the fruit of a sneeze
yet the thought of the snot makes me heave
my prints they all have left me
they're on that neck to stay
DNA snot's not comin' off
it's New Guitar Day
(Repeat chorus)
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
It's New Guitar Day
New Guitar Day
G&L:
Have you ever seen a great finish but for whatever reason the better grain pattern was on the backside?
Have you seen a G&L that was close to perfect except for something or several things that just didn't quite work visually?
Hollow bodies: F-hole or No F-hole?
Concept: Touring G&L Guitarorama with jam sessions supported by dealers? .........Yay? or Nay?
Future finishes: Glossy metal series........Bronze, Chrome, Copper, Brass, Platinum?
Finish Option: matching neck (palm side)?
Finish Option: If an F-hole dark stained interior hollow body instead of raw wood?
Option: G&L noiseless pickups?
Thanks to everyone who read all the way to this sentence.
Have a Great Weekend?

Re: Breakfast / Lunch Report ----------> Friday October 14,
Nice week Michael.
Have you ever seen a great finish but for whatever reason the better grain pattern was on the backside? Nt that I can recall
Have you seen a G&L that was close to perfect except for something or several things that just didn't quite work visually? Seen a good few where the black hardware would have made all the difference ....
Hollow bodies: F-hole or No F-hole? As grandpa Simpson would say ... a little from column A and a little from column B. Generally I don't have a strong view either way ... although some body styles don't look quite right with a hole.
Concept: Touring G&L Guitarorama with jam sessions supported by dealers? Yay! So what's the chances of it touring Aus ... and even if it does, what are the chances that the organisers would realise that Australia has both and East AND an West coast?
Future finishes: Glossy metal series........Bronze, Chrome, Copper, Brass, Platinum? I wasn't really excited by the aluminium finished "The Mothership" Bluesboy, but maybe something creative like those Bonamassa guitars that someone posted recently might be attract some attention.
Finish Option: matching neck (palm side)? Not on the bolt-ons but pretty much mandatory on the set necks.
Finish Option: If an F-hole dark stained interior hollow body instead of raw wood? Depends on the exterior finish but I do think that a "natural" interior does look somewhat "unfinished" and out of place on many guitars ... particularly if they have one of the more open f holes.
Option: G&L noiseless pickups? The more options the better.
NGD ....What do you think? Blues? Country? An opera? LOL Nah ... with those lyrics about a dirty little .... umm guitar ..... I'm thinking some good old Aussie pub rock would be the go ...

cheers, Robbie

Re: Breakfast / Lunch Report ----------> Friday October 14,
Michael, thanks for the entertaining week. Your song could be country but it is not a heartbreaker! You could add another verse saying it got run over by a train. With the green emphasis today this is certainly a natural product to make fast necks.
Have you ever seen a great finish but for whatever reason the better grain pattern was on the backside?
I haven't as many of the fine tops are caps.
Have you seen a G&L that was close to perfect except for something or several things that just didn't quite work visually?
Yes, I have. I looked at two different Spalted models and they both had pooling in the clearcoat about the size of a dime leaving a low area. I suspect it was caused by the wood. It was a show stopper for me as I would love to have a Spalted.
Hollow bodies: F-hole or No F-hole?
I have both and do not have a preference although unplugged the F hole is very resonant and definitely louder.
Concept: Touring G&L Guitarorama with jam sessions supported by dealers? .........Yay? or Nay?
I would like to see our local have a G&L open house such as Taylor did recently. I think that G&L could benefit from exposure like that. I would even be willing to display mine so people can see different colors and models.
Future finishes: Glossy metal series........Bronze, Chrome, Copper, Brass, Platinum?
I have seen aluminum bodies and they are beautiful. The problem with metal finishes is that they are subject to scratches and marks which are difficult to remove.
I think that a copper body wold be beautiful but to keep it that way it would have to be clear coated.
Finish Option: matching neck (palm side)?
I think that matching headstocks are a class act. Also matching necks can be striking depending on the guitar. The Mahogany BB that I once owned had a matching neck and headstock and looked very nice. I do like the contrast of natural necks.
Finish Option: If an F-hole dark stained interior hollow body instead of raw wood?
I like raw wood and also I think a binding in different colors could really enhance the f hole.
Option: G&L noiseless pickups? Not a priority as that is not a problem for me. I have a Legacy with aftermarket pickups and it is noisless, but it is not a showstopper for me. A lot of tube amps being used are noisy.
Have a great weekend everyone!-- Darwin

Re: Breakfast / Lunch Report ----------> Friday October 14,
Yes, but it doesn't bother me. I mean, after all, you have a relatively bland spruce top on the front of an acoustic guitar, with gorgeous rosewood on the back.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Have you ever seen a great finish but for whatever reason the better grain pattern was on the backside?
G&L has so many finish combinations and options, some are bound to have little or no appeal to me. I like a guitar that is visually cohesive. For example, If I have a Honeyburst, I really want the GOT gloss neck.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Have you seen a G&L that was close to perfect except for something or several things that just didn't quite work visually?
I had an original Fender Tele Thinline, and I liked the f-hole; as I did on the ACSH I had. Don't think I want an f-hole on my Legacy-bodied guitar.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Hollow bodies: F-hole or No F-hole?
I think they should copy Taylor's Road Show events. Definitely GAS inducing. Bring about 40 G&Ls of the various models--sort of a traveling NAMM display. Little music, some food. Great idea. BTW, I mentioned this idea to our PacNW G&L rep about a year ago.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Concept: Touring G&L Guitarorama with jam sessions supported by dealers? .........Yay? or Nay?
Probably too expensive to do, and they'd be heavy guitars. Hmmm...."G&L introduces it's new line of 'Heavy Metal' guitars!!!"Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Future finishes: Glossy metal series........Bronze, Chrome, Copper, Brass, Platinum?
Yeah, that could be fun. They used to do this on some of the old pre-BBE guitars. But, you have these nitwits that have to sand off the finish on the back of their guitar's neck. That just ruins a guitar for me. Talked to a guy a few days ago who'd done this to a Les Paul, and now he can't sell it. Probably going to have have it refinished, or take a huge loss.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Finish Option: matching neck (palm side)?
Another idea I've floated before. Both ways look cool, but for different reasons. My Gibson ES-335 has the inner surface of the f-holes painted black to hide the end grain; but for some reason, that stuff STILL comes off and turns my hands black.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Finish Option: If an F-hole dark stained interior hollow body instead of raw wood?
Got 'em! We have Duncan Seth Lovers, '59s and TB-4 PAF humbuckers; we have Gotoh Blades on the Legacy Special and the three-pickup Invaders; and we have the Comanche MFDs. What more could you possibly want?[/quote]Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:Option: G&L noiseless pickups?

Yay of course. I'd be happy with a WR swing thru the midwest....

Edit: I meant Taylor's show at AG&B in Maple Grove, MN. They do a good set-up too...

Did you go? I missed that. They're doing set-ups and adding Grover Locking Rotomatics(minis) to my new Parker. They are pretty active in this area; WR should Clinic there, maybe.I would like to see our local have a G&L open house such as Taylor did recently. Lunch...........a raw carrot and one or two oranges. HOLY POOP, NO WONDER YOU WRITE SONGS LIKE BELOW. EAT A ROAST BEEF SANDWICH, MAN, AND ADD AT LEAST A PALE ALE (it is lunch - should be light) AND A GOOD SIZED PIECE OF CHOCOLATE CAKE.
Have you ever seen a great finish but for whatever reason the better grain pattern was on the backside?YEA, WHY WOULDN'T THE MAKER HAVE SEEN THAT? BAD DECISION DAY? OR DO THEY KNOW SOMETHING WE DON'T???
Have you seen a G&L that was close to perfect except for something or several things that just didn't quite work visually? YEA, LIKE - WELL, YOU KNOW, WE'VE SEEN 'EM....
Hollow bodies: F-hole or No F-hole? WHY "F"...what's wrong with ROUND or OBLONG?
Concept: Touring G&L Guitarorama with jam sessions supported by dealers? .........Yay? or Nay? YEA!!! DO ONE IN RICHMOND, VA! THIS KIND OF THING IS EXPENSIVE, THO' - BUT IT WOULD BRING OUT THE G&L FANS, GUITARS, and PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS IN AN AREA - HOPEFULLY. LIKE TAYLOR'S, NEED A GOOD PLAYER, AND A GOOD SALESMAN, AND SOME OMGTHAT'SUNREALLYGOREGOUS guitars - AND THE DEALER GETS TO MAKE A SALE...SO HAVE PLENTY OF OTHER DARNGOREGOUS ONES IN STOCK TO SEND TO THE NEXT CITY!
Future finishes: Glossy metal series........Bronze, Chrome, Copper, Brass, Platinum? Uck.
Finish Option: matching neck (palm side)? ALL SORTS OF THINGS ARE NEAT. MATCH HEADSTOCK TO BODY (then the fb and/or neck is in contrast). OPAQUE (RED, BLUE, BLACK, ETC.) - YEA, THE ENTIRE GUITAR - THEN THE FB QUICKLY BECOMES "RELIC", OR JUST HAVE THE FB NATURAL, BUT THE REST OF THE GUITAR IS PAINTED? HOW ABOUT COCOBOLA FB's? OR OTHER WOODS?
Finish Option: If an F-hole dark stained interior hollow body instead of raw wood? OR IN CONTRASTING COLOR?
Option: G&L noiseless pickups?

Re: Breakfast / Lunch Report ----------> Friday October 14,
I should have posted images of examples for some of these items. It might have seemed like I was complaining as though this was a common fault when it was just intended to be a topic of conversation about a casual observation from time to time. For instance, I have seen a couple instances of the grain being better on the back but this was only a personal preference and not an error.
Aussie,
I think black hardware is popular enough and would work with so many finishes offered by G&L it would justify making it an option.
I was thinking of metallic paint rather than actual metal finishes. Weight is an issue but then again think of the shielding with certain metals.
__________
darwinohm,
Yes a good reason for the tears in the beer is missing.
I need to go back and listen to the group of guitars at the shop. I did not detect a significant difference in a hollow body with the f-hole. It was one such guitar that I also considered the best playing in the lot.
Some member's collections like yours is one that I would consider flying out to see. If something like a traveling show was ever organized I imagine people would prefer to restrict their collection to local shows and not have them shipped all over.
Suggesting a bound f-hole cut-out? Hmm

Boogie Bill,
"Heavy Metal Guitars" haha… I was thinking of metallic paint not actual metal. Have you ever seen the car insurance commercial where the patient in a doctor's office has a case of lead foot, literally?
Are the available noiseless pickups an option on all G&L custom orders? If you have to buy them separately you might as well shop around. I also think of noiseless as something other than a consequence of their being humbuckers. In a different context I am interested in a noiseless pickup that sounds as close to a single coil as possible. I realize that in order to be noiseless humbucking conditions are typically set up in some degree but there is still a distinction between what amounts to a humbucker in single coil size and a single coil pickup that is marketed as "noiseless."
__________
Ledergeist,
Motorhead haha! You quoted my song when I was going to delete and replace the lyrics with " Sorry for serving up a turkey for Friday's Lunch Report." It was embarrassingly bad but matched to the right band who knew?

Is "keeping your 2¢" allowed?

Ishines,
I have been eating like a bird on the road lately but after I get the new guitar….?
The grain front to back is more a preference than on the level of an error.
Some people just have no sense of visual design and order combinations that do not work well. On the other hand there is the build it and they will come. If the quality is there someone with equally bad taste will have no reason to avoid it.
With the optional matching neck I did not mean fretboard. The fretboard is something in and of itself as a vital factor more than appearance. The fretboard color should be the first decision. If say a maple then there would be certain finishes to consider and certain to exclude right off the bat. Some people tend to order parts like they do not effect the rest of the guitar. I see a lot of GOT necks that look like big yellow sticks while others fit in with the rest of the guitar like a glove.
I apologize if I overlooked anyone.
Thank you to everyone who read the LRs this week and especially to those kind enough to pretend I was interesting.
Next week's LRs will be hosted by John (aka Jwebsmall)
