Lunch/Dinner Report - Thursday September 29th

Post by KenC »

I'll jump in with a quick one here.

Lunch was a jerk chicken sandwich with mango chutney and a diet soda. It was a special in the cafeteria at work. I wasn't expecting real jerk, but all this had for flavor was about two drop of Tabasco. Dinner was a homemade version of my kids' favorite food from our previous home - Cincinnati chili. For those who haven't experienced this Midwestern delight, the "chili" part of it is a thin, brown sauce with a finely ground meat floating in it an a bunch of spices. The recipes are always secrets, but they tend to have a lot of cinnamon and other savory spices as well as a bit of sugar. The stuff we had tonight came from cans, by a restaurant chain called Skyline. It's served on spaghetti noodles and topped with cheddar cheese. It tastes a lot worse than it sounds the first five or six times you have it. After that it starts tasting really good.

Non-G&L Questions: What is your local delicacy? Do you actually like it?

After dinner I took my son to Guitar Center to pick up a case we had ordered for his cello. Lessons start at his school next week. This was our second try with this particular SKB case. The first one hadn't been cut properly, so one of the latches wouldn't latch. It also had foam padding on the inside which had come loose and then the pieces glued to each other during shipment, and it was impossible to separate them without tearing them up. The new case latches well, but the padding was even worse. I've never seen problems with SKB products before this, so it was really baffling to see two defects in a row. I went ahead and accepted the case, and will call their customer service tomorrow to get new padding. I'm sure they will work it out.

Several of the older G&Ls I've purchased recently have come without cases. Finding replacement cases has been just about as hard as finding Leo-era instruments. I'm not sure if it's the headstock shape, the extra fret compared to a Fender, or some combination of factors, but almost every standard Strat/Tele case has been about 3/4" too short for the headstock. I ordered an SKB-66 as a shot in the dark for my '88 ASAT, and it turned out to fit like a glove.

G&L Questions: Have you had any problems finding aftermarket cases for older G&Ls? Or have you managed to find instruments still in their original cases? Do you have any recommendations to share?

Sorry if these are old topics!

Thanks for stepping up, Ken, and sorry about that bit of confusion yesterday.

Because I went to undergraduate school in the Cincinnati area, I am well familiar with the style of chili to which you refer. Make mine five a five-way, please! I actually make something similar at home. And you're right, some cinnamon and sugar does the trick! I actually liked it the first time I tried it. But then again, at the time, I would have eaten virtually anything ;+).

My local delicacy in the Chesapeake Bay region is hard-shell blue crab, or if you're a bit lazy, the crab cake. Like it/them very much. We used to catch our own crabs on vacation in Ocean City, MD when we were kids, then steam 'em up with beer and Old Bay seasoning. Great memories and great and tasty fun!

Sorry to hear about your trouble with that SKB case. I'm actually quite surprised, but maybe I shouldn't be, given the general state of affairs.
You're right thought about it being difficult to obtain proper cases for old G&L instruments I've had my eye out for a correct case for my 1st style SB-2 bass, and have come up empty. Anyhow, thanks for the Report. I was just about to try to save the tradition again when I saw your post. Good work! - ed

While these are not the original cases, the new Deluxe Tolex case for the current F-100 will
work for the original F-100's and the original old body style S-500's (1988 - 1991), as well.

Thanks Craig for the info.

Any thoughts on a good quality, well-fitting case for a 1st-Style SB-2? That would be news I can use! Thanks - ed

PS: I have never touched an F-100 but am intrigued and look forward to doing so someday.

You are welcome, Ed.

Send me or post the measurement of the full length of your SB-2 and I will check with the factory
to see if the current deluxe bass case will fit.

Ed,

I'm a couple of minutes north of Annapolis, and haven't touched crab other than crab cakes in the year I've been out here. It was a favorite where I grew up on the South Carolina coast, too. The local variant down around Charleston is "she-crab soup" - basically a crab bisque with rowe and plenty of sherry. We lived in Maine for eight year, and actually hit the point of being sick of lobster. Since I'm only back there a couple of weeks every year now, I've reacquired the taste.

I've never looked for a proper case for my first-style SB-1. The shop I bought it from put it in a case from a full-sized 90s-vintage G&L. If it's any help, the length is an exact fit but there's about an inch of side-to-side play due to the smaller body size. I wonder if these originally came in undersized plywood cases like the first-style SC-2. Does your SC-2 have one of those cases?

In the spirit of your traveling SC-2, I have an original F-100 if you want to try it. It's an early one too, I suspect. I haven't removed the neck to verify the date, but it has the lowest serial number in the Registry (G000504, to be exact).

I've heard about Skyline chili, but have yet to have the pleasure.... Around here, frozen custard would probably be considered a delicacy....

Cases:
The SC-3 I have shipped in a TKL case. It's nice. Worth looking at if you need a case for a G&L...

Guys,

My ASAT III did not have a case when I purchased it. I had a TKL case I had bought for a Fernandes that was long gone from my collection. The ASAT fit perfect.

Ken - Thanks for the generous offer. We'll have to connect some time (probably when things are less crazy here with my kids and my oldies). My brother probably doesn't live too far from you. Appreciate the advice on the case as well. Frankly, it's not very high on my list of priorities, but someday..... - ed
