Monday 9/19/2011 Lunch Report

It's been over a year since I last did my duty as Lunch Reporter. I'll start off with a little bit about me for the newer members. My name is Steve and I've been a G&LDP member since 2000. I'm an automotive technician (aka: mechanic at a small Chevrolet dealership in the Northwest corner of Missouri. My location is approximately half way between Kansas City and Omaha. My other hobbies include small gas engine repair, all terrain vehicles and sprint car racing. I have a friend that races and I help him when I can. Here's the car:



Lunch: I have a group of friends that I eat lunch with during the week. Most of them are also in the automotive field. A few work at the local Case-IH implement dealer. One of the guys is 88 years old and still works everyday! Today we ate at the Deli at the local grocery store. I had meatloaf, green beans & cauliflower.

Guitars: How many is enough? My G&L collection at one time was approximately 15 guitars. I had more than one of some models and at one time 5 of the first body style S-500's. I made the decision to cut back to only one of each model. After slowly selling them off, I'm down to 6 G&L's and a few guitars from other manufactures. Do you own multiples of the same guitar? I'm surprised to find that I'm enjoying having to maintain fewer guitars. It gives me more time for other hobbies!

It's still daylight and the weather is decent so I'm going for a ride one of my Arctic Cat's!

Funny you should mention owning multiples of the same guitar, just today I bought my second 1986 Rampage. I now have 3 Rampages if you count the new Tribute model. Even though it's just a 1 humbucker, 1 volume guitar, there's just something special about the Rampage. It should be here in a few days. Bought it from Guitar Center for $499. I just couldn't let it go!

Steve, are you the owner of the red Rampage I just saw on another site? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Sprinter, welcome back. I finally have time and missed lunch today. I had two new guitars that I bought with damage tow years ago and i finally repaired and painted them today, Lots of sanding, painting and then, buffing. They are both as new again and will be sold with full disclosure but certainly sweet deals for like new guitars.

Racing sounds like an exciting sport. Snowmobile racing was a big sport in Minnesota for many years. Funny you should mention Arctic Cat. A great Minnesota company along with Polaris who has done well.

I have had way too many Fenders and have been thinning them out. I had 17 of them and by the end of next week should be down to 12 or 13. I don't need that many Fenders but I have some that are hard to find. I need to control my G&L habit but they are almost irresistible. I may end up with one more but time will tell. I would like to keep the numbers lower but it is not easy. Red ones are hard to pass up. Let me know when you are heading to Alex and we can meet up!-- Darwin

Steve, are you the owner of the red Rampage I just saw on another site? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

Yes, I'm the owner of the red Rampage you saw on another site. I bought that one with some incorrect parts on it and a rattle can paint job. I've bought and sold several Rampages in the past and I liked them. I always wanted a red one, so this one will be a keeper. I'm anxious to get it back from the painter!

I've had good luck with Arctic Cat ATV's. The first two I owned had Suzuki engines in them. The two I have now are 100% Arctic Cat. The black one is an '05 650H-1 and it has their first engine in it. The green one is a 700H-1 with fuel injection.

I hope to get back up to Alex next spring. I'll let you know if I'm headed that way.

Hey Sprinter.

How many is enough? Probably fewer than I have, given the economy and my lack of talent and time.

I've sold off my high-end guitars over the past few years, and picked up a couple of Leo-era G&L basses and a couple of vintage amps.
I don't miss the guitars. And I don't play bass.

I made a meatloaf for my family a few days ago. I thought it was great. One of the kids thought it was great. The other one thought it was not worth the life of a cow. My wife was ambiguous. I've sliced and frozen half of it. My demented parents will appreciate it.

Those vehicles look way fun. How many smiles to the pint of vodka do you get? Ha! - ed

Nice toys you have there Steve! I used to work on my car quite a bit about 7 years ago. Got into it because I started racing auto-x in AZ. The car is gone now and the only work I do on my current vehicles is routine maintenance.

Man I miss that car!

Lunch today was bbq chicken and rice, chicken was excellent rice was just ok. Free lunch at the work caf so I can't complain too often.

I have 2 ASAT specials, I like them both and they don't sound exactly alike. If money were no object I'd keep them both but if one had to go I wouldn't have too big a problem, in fact almost had to sell one recently. Posted it and all, no bites and I happy I didn't have to re-list.

Yesterday,s lunch was a crêpe filled with onions and larder, and an almond yoghurt.

I'm a real bum at mechanics even though I really appreciate all machines. The men that work on it look like magicians to me

I only have 2 G&L at the moment, an ASAT classic custom and a Legacy, but if money wasn't an issue, I'd bought more, and I'm convinced that every instrument has its own voice so that kind of answers your question I guess.

Hi Sprinter,

My Dad was an auto mechanic and I've spent many hours watching him remove engines, fix transmissions, fit new brakes and skin his knuckles at every stage. The smell of Solvol soap is etched in my nostrils. I have a great deal of respect for auto mechanics and the seemingly magical art of tracking down faults from the vague descriptions of owners. I can change oil and a tyre, and that's the limit of my ability.

Those Arctic Cats look like interesting machines. Where do you ride them? Are they road legal or strictly off road?

I've got too many strat and tele type guitars (3 of each). I've thought about selling some off but I'll probably just hand them to my kids if they show any interest in learning how to play.

Those Arctic Cats look like interesting machines. Where do you ride them? Are they road legal or strictly off road?

Some states and communities do allow you to ride ATV's on the road. However, I'm in an area that doesn't allow that. I tried it and was caught by the Missouri Highway Patrol. I ride in the pasture. I have 15 acres to ride on.
