ASAT neck. to oil or not?

Hi guys, looking for opinions on lemon oil on my 1987 ASAT neck? Not sure if its rosewood or ebony (RW I think!!!)

any thoughts?

looks like rosewood to me, but hard to see.

Have you ever oiled a neck before? I think it's worth it once a year. cleans it up nice, and gives it a nice scent.

I let it sit overnight and clean it well the day after, this way is a bit less greasy.

I love oiled necks. That's why the Rampage is my favorite guitar. G&L used Birchwood Casey tru oil on the necks. That's what Music Man is using on their necks as well. Last year I restored a 1985 Invader. I stripped the poly finish off the neck down to the bare wood, and refinished it with the Tru-oil. I love the feel of the raw necks!!!!!

Sorry, after reading your post again, I kinda jumped the gun. I didn't realise that you were talking about the fretboard. However, oiled necks still rule! Lol!

Hey oneeyedog,

Yes you can use lemon oil, but use it sparingly. Using too much will actually increase the amount of dust, grime, etc. collected on your fingerboard. Only need a couple of drops for the whole board. Very nice guitar though

Another side effect of too much (or too-old, sticky) oil can be a rosin-like squeaking of fingertips on the board, a bit like trainers on a marble floor.

But if you do this, don't panic. Don't start buying glamourous fingerboard cosmetics (you'll just seal the problem in, or even introduce Teflon into your problem); just keep playing (and maybe wiping a bit) and it will go away.
Light oiling is good, and once a year is plenty, whatever anyone's marketing guys say.
My personal vote is for the nice simple "Fret Doctor"

, but I don't keep it past four years old.

I use Formbys lemon oil and it works and smells great. I also do it several times a year here in Minnesota and the necks continue to look new!-- Darwin
