~Wednesday 7th September~

Post by stagecoach »

OK, let’s get back on track of what I had in mind before being rudely interrupted by a courier delivering a new guitar.

My city/town – I love Perth mainly because of its climate. We have Californian weather (without snow), no earth quake fault lines nearby, far enough south we don’t get Cyclones (Hurricanes for you northern hemisphere people), no volcanoes, and a relatively small population.
Don’t get me wrong, we do have the occasional big storm that will come through and rip your roof off, but that is so random and it has never happened to me

Here is a nice little promo Western Australia did, this showcase some of the beautiful things of our city

Lunch – same as yesterday, so lunch from last week. Curried egg sandwich’s (of all sandwiches this is my favourite), home mad chocolate cake

G&L Question– What is your Favourite G&L body and neck wood and what finish do you like on them? I have had very little experience but I do love my combo – I believe it is a Swamp ash body, Rosewood neck, and Cherry Burst finish

Non G&L question #1– in 1936, Born on this day, Buddy Holly, singer, songwriter (That'll Be The Day, It Doesn't Matter Anymore). Influenced such bands as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Holly was killed in a plane crash on 3rd February 1959. The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valans were also killed in the crash.
Who would be your guitar Hero’s? I have so many, but I will name a core few. The first record I purchased with my own money (pocket money) was a Buddy Holly record. He was my first influence, but is probably down on the list as I have discover more music (and you tube).

At the top of my list is Chet Atkins. He was a master of the guitar and he was such a humble person. Mark Knopfler, Albert Lee, Brent Mason are others that are on the top run for me. These guys are more recognised for their country stuff but I have heard them play various other forms of music styles over their careers.

Non G&L question #2– What other instruments do you play/would like to play? I am a guitar player, started off with rhythm, and then learnt Lead guitar. I can also play Bass quite well and can usually keep up on a double bass (I do find the double bass that bit harder because you play it differently compared to an electric and the lack of frets) and I also play Mandolin. The mandolin was an afterthought. I wanted to play fiddle but I find the bowing to be difficult. Found out the mandolin is tuned the same as I started on that instead. One day I want to go back to the fiddle but at the current time we have a great fiddle player in our band

Still Tuesday here in Beautiful British Columbia but hey I haven’t yet been able to thank you yet for your Lunch Reports Stagecoach, looking good!

any who favorite body/neck wood and finish combo, for me it is a nice tobacco sunburst over mahogany with a rosewood neck.

There is just something about that combo that really inspires me, second favorite would be maple neck ash body and honeyburst with a nice white pearloid PG.

When I first started playing the guitar I didn't really have any guitar heroes, since playing I would have to say that I love alot of the early pioneers like Buddy Holly and unfortunately not enough people know who he was.

Chet is incredibly awesome.

Other instrument to play, while lately I have been looking for a good travel instrument so I have tried Banjos, Mandos, and even a guitelele...

Ever since I first started playing I have been thinking of learning to play the bass if only because the best guitarists I personally know also play the bass (or to put it more correctly they actually play guitar as there second instrument)

Although I do also wonder how hard it would be to learn on a fretless bass?

My city/town – I love Perth I do too ... for many reasons. Climate, isolation, frontier spirit, creative spirit .... but we need to be careful how many folks we let in on the secret!

What is your Favourite G&L body and neck wood and what finish do you like on them? I naturally incline towards mahogany for guitar bodies and even necks. Ebony or a good rosewood fret boards is always a big plus for me too, although I do prefer a maple neck for single coils. Colour wise I like to see grain but I'm not really a fan of natural finishes. I like a good translucent in most colours or a burst - particularly the tobaccos. For some reason though three colour sunbursts rarely do it for me.

Who would be your guitar Hero’s? Non in particular ... too many in general. I have a HUGE respect for the abilities of so many guitar players in so many genres, but for me the heros are those who tried to take the instrument to new places - so Reinhardt, Hendrix, Fripp, Zappa, Howe, Di Meola, Holdsworth, and a bunch of others I've forgoten to mention..

What other instruments do you play/would like to play? I'm a hack keyboard player but it became clear to me back in the 70's that keyboards weren't going to play a major part in my musical career. Ever since hearing Battle of Evermore (I'm a big Sandy Denny fan btw) I've fancied having a crack at at a mandolin but never actually got round to giving it a go.

cheers, Robbie

asat with maple body and ebony fb. or mahogany body with ebony fingerboard. or swamp ash with ebony fb. as for guitar hero's - - no hero's per se but a lot of favorties. too many to list but some off the top of my head: Hank Garland (Jazz Winds From a New Direction era), Rory Gallagher, Tom Verlaine, Roy Buchanan, George Van Eps, Mick Taylor, Dick Dale, Paco, Bert Jansch, Richard Thompson, Jorma, Trower, Winter, the "usual" suspects, etc., etc., etc.

Ahryn – Have you looked at uke’s. In the below chart the C = G, A = E on guitar minus the low strings. So play a guitar chord, add 5 semitones (a forth) and call it a uke chord
Image

Bass I find easy (after playing lead) as you generally have to think about 1 note at a time, not usually more than 4 notes in a 4/4 bar, sometimes as little as 1 note in every 3 (3/4) and generally have set patters to work with (depending on style of music).

Aussie – All my guitars have maple necks except the G&L. I have always loved maple, but I could not go past the tone of my G&L

The only certainty is a maple neck, preferably with a tinted gun oil finish. No preference for wood, really. And although I have a fondness for Fullerton Red, I'd love to get a body with nothing more than a clear honey coating.

Nice chord chart Stagecoach, the only reason why I haven't really considered ukelele is that somehow whenever I hold one I always feel like I am about to crush it in my hands.

I am by no means a "big guy" (more tall then anything) I just guess they are braced differently but I think from now on I will keep my eyes out and my mind open for one.

I play mostly rhythm so I guess Bass would be a great way to get in the mindset of lead playing, maybe i'll have to keep an eye out for a nice used G&L bass or a tribby hurm, I only ask about the fretless because I messed around on a squier fretless bass that seemed like a barrel of fun.

This is a great thread, Stagecoach! I particularly like your response to Ahryn, though all is good tonight!

Regret not posting so much since doing LR. Honestly, my last time of service left me a bit exhausted and behind on some of my more practical responsibilities.

Anyhow, with the kids' school starting and a financial crisis involving my wife's sister and OUR money, well, I sort of lost my will to go on. Okay, I exaggerate a bit. Sue me.

What was I saying? Oh, yeah, I got my wife a (decent) uke last Xmas. Can you guess which I prefer to listen to in the evening? Ha! Me neither.

Shi*t. Where was I? Oh, give me a soft maple body, and hard rock maple neck, and a near-black* ebony fret board.

Give me a (reissue) Fender Wide-Range humbucking pickup in the neck (with the less-expensive magnet alloy), and a big MFD single coil in the bridge position. Give me a Telly shape, slab body, a 5-way switch and a third knob for blending the two pups, arrayed on my traditional Telly switchplate. Give me fixed, G&L Saddle-Lock bridge. Nickel-coated steel strings, 10-46 set. A fifth of mid-grade vodka. 32 ounces of Gatorade (I like the AM varieties best). Inflatable hoo-ha. Ha! - ed

Edited because I forgot to explain the asterisk, above: I'm not bashing our President, especially given the alternatives. Did anybody else watch the debate? I'm a registered Independant, but Huntsman is the only one of the R's I could see ever pulling the lever for......
