~Monday 5th September~
It is an honor being picked by Craig himself this week.
I find this G&L community to be great, on so many other forums people start to have a go at each other and it brings the whole community down, but here it is all good fun, striving for one great cause – G&L
Another week of early LR as I live in a great place called Western Australia. A little more on that in the coming days
I have just had a week holiday (Vacation), but just stayed home and caught up on some general maintenance and today happens to be my RDO, the real holiday is a month away (8 days on a cruise ship with the family).
BTW – if there are any phrases or words you are unfamiliar with just let me know and I will rephrase/reword.
Lunch – Macaroni and cheese, some creamed biscuits and a muesli bar. I am not one foe extravagant lunches, today being my RDO I can get a warm meal
And now for the weather. In the southern hemisphere we have just gone into spring. Over the weekend it was raining, but today is a lovely 20C (68F) and partly cloudy and the outlook is the same, just a few degrees warmer by next weekend.
G&L Question - Ok, I have started a poll, so let’s hear about your favorite G&L and why (I was only allowed 10 options, so I grouped the ASAT’s). In the past few weeks we have been asked what our dream G&L would be, but I thought I would ask the simple question of which your favorite is and why you picked it? I just wished the local retailers would stock these guitars.
My answer, as I have stated so many times before is - I was looking for a Tele and I was on holidays in the USA and we were in Nashville. We were told about this second hand dealer Gruhn’s, so we went in to have a look. The only Tele was one in which someone changed the pickups and I thought it sounded terrible. I said, “Is that all you have” and the guy replied, “in Fender yes, but I do have a G&L.” Well we had a few hours to kill so I thought I would give it a try. On first looks I thought this was going to sound terrible, those large MFD’s did not look like they would give me a sound I was looking for. So they plug it into this little amp and I started to play and man did I fall in love.
Non G&L question #1 – What is the weirdest place you have played? I don’t have anything over the top, but I have played in many paddocks/fields over the years, on the backs of old wagons. But I would like to hear some stories from some of you out there of weird places you have played
Non G&L question #2 – I am a great lover of “funny” songs. I guess it was because my dad is a bit that way as well. I never realised until many years later that some of the songs my dad was singing were parodies (mainly from Homer and Jethro) and when I heard the original things started to make sense
So here are some I thought you may like-
We will start off with the for mentioned Homer and Jethro

and a local band which use to have me in stitches whenever we would go to one of their shows
Sensitive New Age Cowpersons play Foggy Mountain Breakdown

and of course Weird Al Yankovic - Polka Power

I could go on forever with this stuff, but I will let you now take over.

Hey Stagecoach -
Nice start to the week. Seeing how we're in the same hemisphere, thought I'd respond first...
Nice Axe & story to go along with it. You & I have basically the same guitar - circa 1990 ASAT SIg tho you have the flash finish.
Char is my fave & currently only G&L and I dig her as sonically she can pretty much cover all bases... Oh, and for those of you out there who dislike folks naming there guitars and/or referring to them as she, I suggest build a bridge...
Got to say there's something magical bout Leo-era MFD's... seem to sound good through any amp. My first gig with Char was the week after I got her and I was playing at a friend's going away gig using a 80's Peavey Studio Pro amp and I actually got compliments on my sound.
I also dig the tele shape body, nitro finish and the saddle lock bridge which provides plenty of sustain - ironic for a top loading bridge design..
Question for ya re your ASAT Sig - how would you describe the neck profile? Char's is rounder and fuller than all other Leo-era ASAT's I've owned - the others tended to be thinner and have a V profile. I've only seen one other Leo-era guitar with this neck profile and it was on '90 S-500 Sig that Trading Musician (used music store in Seattle). Great guitar as was light as! They had it on the floor for $975 and it wasnt there long...
Strangest place I played - a tiny living room at a party house in Tacoma back in 1985... Our band Rile & Terror, played Judas Priest, Ratt, & AC/DC covers with some originals. We were a legend in our own lounge/kitchen...
Nice Vids - esp the first one!
Here's one of my faves w/ a comic edge...

Hi Stagecoach.
It's a nice spring day here today as well. But in true Melbourne fashion it will be deep, dark winter by week's end.
My favorite G&L is my first, an ASAT Special. I never was much of a tele guy till I pulled the funny looking guitar off the wall to see what the weird pickups sounded like. Since then I've been hooked and bought 2 more tele style guitars. But the Special is my fave. It feels like an extension of my arms.
Weirdest gig was in a room underneath a brothel. We couldn't work out why there were so many cars but so few punters to see the band. Then we noticed the traffic going up and down the stairs.

Re: ~Monday 5th September~
I only have ASAT Classics, with a Bluesboy in there for good measure. However, after having a play of Philby's Special this weekend I have decided I will be getting one of them next. They sound and feel fantastic
I haven't played anywhere really strange. I've played in a couple of fields too. Here's proof - some sheep behind my gear...
SNAC are a very funny group. Do they still play every now and then? Last time I saw them was at Clancy's maybe 6 years ago now. There a lot of talent in that band.
For some reason the only funny song I can think of is 'Camp Grenada'. My apologies

ALRIGHT! First time ever I get to read and respond to a Lunch report in my own actual lunchtime and I have to sit through back to back meetings and don't get to check in until this evening. Oh well maybe tomorrow.
Great to see another Perth boy up for the honours (I almost passed the baton to you a few weeks back but thought it might have been a bit too parochial)
G&L - the simple question of which your favorite is and why you picked it? Legacy! Why? well if you mean why I picked it as my favorite then that would be 'cause its the only G&L I have. I you mean simply why did I pick it, well as a follower of Leo Fender's career, I had been aware of G&L since its inception. But as you've noted there aint no G&L dealers within a 4hr commercial jet flight of Perth and I've only ever bought one guitar without having been able to play it first - and that's the G&L. I bought it online after having the oportunity to try one owned by Police Commissioner Karl O'Callaghan one night when we played at a charity gig along with his band. Loved it enough to take a punt on an online purchase.
I just wished the local retailers would stock these guitars. Amen to that brother! But I have great hopes for G&L's new Australian distributor Boutique Music. They and their parent - Jacksons Rare Guitars in Sydney - are good companies.
Weirdest place you have played? Not to many really wierd places but I suppose a 4 week residency at the Pier Hotel in Port Hedland back in the '70s was probably the biggest dive. For thse not familiar with it, Port Hedland is a mining town ... and you played behind steel mesh for a reason. I've certainly played in front of soem pretty wierd audiences though ... but thats a whole different set of stories.
“funny” songs Last time I saw SNAC live was about 4 years ago - great fun night. Cant say I've heard anything of them for a good while now though. As for "funny" songs, I hadn't heard this for years until I heard it on one RTR a couple of weeks back. Reminds me of my youth cruising round the Perth CBD on a Friday night in the early '70s before they turned the roads into pedestrian malls and one way streets.

... and that would be "Newcastle Song" not "New Castle Song"
cheers, Robbie

While not completely odd the Brainwash in San Francisco is a fun place to play as it's part club and cafe and part laundromat. Good place to kill two birds with one stone or to check out the gals who invariably end up wearing some pretty skimpy stuff while their wash is being done. Favorite G&L? ASAT's in general but my current favorite is a ASAT III with a MFD hummer in the bridge and DF. Great start to the week looking forward to more!

Great start stagecoach! I'm enjoying my additional day off and it looks the sun is out to stay fro the day over here. Could be a great day

My favorite seems to change over time. Right now it is a cherryburst maple bodied '89 ASAT III which just plays very sweet. But then again, it could also be my workhorse ASAT Classic, or any of the 2 Broadcasters, or the Trinity, or any of the Bluesboy's, or ...stagecoach wrote:G&L Question ... but I thought I would ask the simple question of which your favorite is and why you picked it?
Not any particular weird place but it is amazing in what kind of places a guitar happens to show up. Beaches, castles, in the middle of frickin' nowhere. In in all of these cases I at least have to hold it for a while usually never to give it back before the end of the eveningstagecoach wrote:Non G&L question #1 – What is the weirdest place you have played?
Plenty of those in my native tongue. Usually comedians in NL have a kind of variety show which songs intermingled with skids. Lots of laughs. One of the funniest I know is a song where the person recalls a year in which his rabbit had mysteriously 'disappeared' the first day of X-mas to be served for dinner later that day. And how his mom was puzzled why dad had 'disappeared' the second day of X-mas ...stagecoach wrote:Non G&L question #2 – ... “funny” songs.

I can't believe I missed the question re. funny/parody songs. In the mid 80's, the guys from British band XTC got together to take the piss out of their favourite 60's influences. They called themselves The Dukes of Stratosphear and each band member changed their name to something more 'period' e.g. Sir John Johns, The Red Curtain, E.I.E.I Owens. The parodies are brilliant. Here's some of the more obvious ones.

Comic edge - It is an interesting concept of stringing random songs together
Philby - Under a Brothel, hmm interesting. Were you booked to drown the sound out from upstairs??
blargfromouterspace - The SNAC's disbanded bout 4 years back and we went to the 2nd last show at the Hyde Park Hotel. They were filming it for a DVD which still has not come out. Ian Simpson (banjo player) is in a duo with Jane Germain (http://www.janegermain.com/) and every now and then do a big show with a full band which consist of mostly SNAC members
Hello Mudda, hello Fudda - very funny song, my first boss use to randomly start singing this. Always brings a smile to my face
Aussie - Playing behind steel mesh, reminds me of the Blues Brother movie.

Newcastle song - again another song my first boss use to sing/quote. ohhhhhhhh said johnny who was the top of his class in English, ohhhhhhhe said Johnny
BTW I will try and get it up for lunch time today, but my job is on the road and if I have time I will connect to the internet and upload Tuesday report
jonc - Part Laundromat? hmm, interesting
I would like to try a 3 pickup ASAT
Smothers Brothers - "Take it Tom. No." Funny stuff. Never new this song had words, I play it as an instrumental on the mandolin
yowhatsshakin - what is with these ASAT III. I am starting to get GAS for an ASAT III. I better leave it a while as I am already in touble with my new arrival. I will reveal beast in Tuesdays LR
I have never checked. I will go over to my parents place where it is kept and do some checking of radius, etc. As it is the only G&L I have ever touched I can't compare.Katefan wrote: Question for ya re your ASAT Sig - how would you describe the neck profile

Re: ~Monday 5th September~
Stagecoach, great start and I am a day late but UP NORT compared to you folks.
My first G&L was a Legacy. I was always a Strat guy and I have to admit that I now prefer the T types. I do not have a favorite as I like them all. I do not own a guitar that I don't like. I sold my only Tribute, an ASAT Special that I really liked this weekend. It was not for sale but a lady friend of ours liked it and wanted it. So, we gave her a very fair deal and I already miss it. It was CAR, one of my faves. But, my G&Ls are all awesome and look better than some of the others.
Great parody clips yesterday. One of my favorites is Jerry Reeds " She Got The Gold Mine-I Got The Shaft". I am sure many could relate to that one!
Odd gig was on a tour boat of Leach Lake one summer. The crowd was sightseeing and visiting with each other. Not a very engaged crowd. Our old lead player was disgusted but I figured it payed like every other gig and it was easy. -- Darwin

Darwin - Love that song. Have you seen when he does it as a duet with Dolly

It is hard playing to small or unresponsive crowds, but you have to look at those ones as a job. You get paid to put on a show, so even if there is 1 person you have to try and act like there is 100. Sometime you have more fun as your all dressed up with no place to go = Dress rehearsal

Re: ~Monday 5th September~
Since I've only got one, I guess my Fullerton Red Legacy is my favourite G&L. I chose it because of its chunky maple neck and thick sound. It's the perfect strat-style guitar for a guy like me who has been playing twin humbuckers my entire electric life.
Strangest place/circumstance I've played is on the Subway. A friend dared me to take out my guitar and perform, and i did. I made two bucks in a half hour. I'd only been playing about 2 months at the time and all I knew was "House of the Rising Sun" and "Blowing in the Wind." Plus, did I mention that I can't sing for beans.

as I said before I have nothing to compare it to. I took the radius guide and a set of calipers to my guitar. It appears to be a #2 neck or a 2a. I think it is round so I would go #2
How do you tell the difference between a V and C neck?
