Late Lunch Report, Wed Aug 31- Reflections

Post by darwinohm »

This is a late evening LR as there was none today.

I have been kind of sad today thinking about those who have had to sell their collections due to job loss, financial, health, divorce, or some unforeseen reason. There have been several who have done this in the past year. In those types of situations we tend to do what we have to do and move forward. I lost my job after 37 years in 2002. It was a stressful thought to be without a job. I was 58 years old and our company had been very unstable for the previous 10 years. I took a few months to decide what I really wanted to do. I decided that i wanted to be my own boss and went into sales for a friend of mine. That is especially dangerous. It happened to work out well and even though I was not as well financially as I would have been the stress level was much better and I was a much happier person in the end and am now fully retired.
I know that many of you have been through this same story and I am wondering how many of you are willing to share your story. Many times we end up better off than we were.

Pico brought up an interesting subject yesterday with the building a baritone guitar. I did some research and learned that there are necks available to convert Strat or Teles to baritones. Pico confirmed that today. That really appeals to me as I have a Tele or Strat that I would love to do that to. I have always wanted a baritone but never wanted to buy a Fender as they were expensive for the use that I anticipated. This has given me a whole new outlook on the baritone. Mighty Mite has necks and I checked the Warmoth site and they also have them. I wish that G&L would sell necks as I would convert one of my Legacys to a baritone.

Today I looked at a G&L ASAT with a top binding and a neck binding. It was very pretty in a 3 tone sunburst. I was surprised that the body was Alder. It had a gloss neck and was a looker. I am not looking for another ASAT Classic but she was purty. Any have one of these with the bound neck?

Every seems to be busy and the activity has been down for posting recently. The LRs do not seem to have the activity that they have had at times. I find the LRs interesting and I learn something on this forum every day. I noticed that several new members posted pictures of new guitars today and evey one of them was a keeper. Many people have jobs that take up their time and prevent them from posting. I encourage you new folks to post on these open Lunch Reports as I find new ideas interesting. Many of you are probably sick of my postings and we need some new ideas along with the old. I miss a lot of the regulars that used to post frequently but maybe it is a slow time of the year. Have a great evening.-- Darwin

Edit: After I posted this I discovered that Jamie had already posted a few minutes ago.

+1 Darwin. And who cares, this Wednesday turned out to have 2 LR's. How about that sports fans?

I'm still hoping Leo's last finished model, a baritone mind you, will get into production in one way or another. I would sign up for one of those in a nanosecond!

As far as traffic and contributions are concerned: hope it picks up again after summer. Talk about summer, well the hell did it go here in the Pacific Northwest?

Cool guitar, Darwin.

Can you give us a quick primer on the controls (third knob and mini-toggle have me scratching my head - and I don't have lice!).

Thanks - ed

Hey Darwin,

I too read the lunch reports daily, and love the insight that everyone around here has on all sorts of topics.....

So about 4 weeks ago my wife decides she would like some granite counter tops, i said sure sounds nice....... Well that has turned into a complete kitchen reno, with me spending almost every free minute sanding, priming and painting some 40 odd kitchen cabinet doors. I am glad that teaching is just around the corner!

I had a chance to play a parker at a gig about 10 years ago, and still remember it like it was yesterday. That thing played unlike any guitar i have played since - it was effortless. I was playing things i didn't thing i was capable of. They are certainly odd looking but unbelievable in your hands.

+1 for a baritone... i have been close on a couple of Dano's but never pulled the trigger, good things come to those who wait ( like a G&L Baritone someday!) I did by a fender bass 6 a few years ago to have some fun in the low range. That is a cool guitar/bass.

Anyway, back to work for me.... I am going to get carpal tunnel from painting of all things!

Ed, happy to give you a tour. It may not be obvious but this also has a piezo bridge (Fishman). So as the guitar sits the two top knobs are volume/tone with a traditional Tele selector switch. The mini toggle is in up position, Tele pickups, Middle position , blend of the pickups with the piezo, and lower position, Piezo only. The bottom knob is volume for the piezo so with the two volumes you can set which pickups you like to blend. The normal Tele selector sw gives you the pickup that you want to blend with the piezo. This thing is an animal with the different configs and the piezo does have a cool tone. This has been one of my main giggers. And it does play effortless. Hope that explains the controls ED. It is also the lightest guitar that I own.

Gitman, projects can sometimes turn into monsters but the Mrs. will be impressed when you are done. That is the perfect setup for another guitar. Your comment on the Parker is typical. They are just so weird looking. If you can get by that, they are fine instrument! Thanks-- Darwin.

It is a 2007 and I am not sure when Parker changed hands but I believe before 2007.-- Darwin

yeah , early 2000s, can't remember exactly right now. Either way, looks nice. I noticed it has the heel end truss rod too. Like a EBMM sort of.

Oddly enough, I don't think the Parker looks weird, but like a Telecaster on really good drugs. ;-) (Or perhaps after a shot of 30 year-old whiskey.) As for job loss, I can understand how stressful it can be, but sometimes it is the best thing that can happen to a person. Sometimes, the money just isn't worth the stress that it entails. And I really do feel for those who have to sell their collections, perhaps the thing to do in such an instance is to purchase an instrument from a friend on the condition that you will sell it back to him at the same price (or same price plus reasonable interest lower than a bank loan) should better times come around. I think that would be a far better deal for the person facing financial trouble than selling to a pawnshop or on eBaY.
