~~~~~~~~ FRIDAY LUNCH REPORT ~~~~~~~~~
Post by Katefan »
:banana: It's Friday.... YEEHHAAA MF - That's Right. :banana: Wow - another week's end... Don't know bout you guys but I'm knack'd & more than ready for some R&R...
I spent most of the day working outside on a farm and the weather was gorgeous - We're heading into Springtime here and its warming up already. One of the things that I noticed bout being on this part of the globe is the Sun is Freakin Bright - may have something to do with the ozone layer or lack thereof. Anyway, I was wearing gumboots(galoshes)all days as I was in some fairly muddy & boggy paddocks. Got to say there's something nice bout being able to step wherever you want and not worrying bout getting your feet dirty - a very freeing feeling much like playing in the mud when you were a kid.
So while I was working today I was thinking bout how I was going to tie in STP with David Gilmour and then I recalled Weiland's 2nd solo album which is called Happy in Galoshes (how fitting) and contains this kinds Floyd-ish tune -
Not surprisingly I hear alot of Bowie in there as well... btw, he does a very cool cover of Fame on the same album which if you're a fan of either tis worth checking out.
And keeping with the theme this week - here's one more STP Late Night clip -
Weiland's voice is straining abit but still a great performance...
MOving on -
Image
This is the guitar that hep'd me to the Coolness of Leo & Co.... Not b/c Mr. Cantrell played one but b/c it was my first G&L.
but mine was pink... Scored it out of the Little Nickel Classifieds back in '94 for $139 including OHSC but it wasnt a matter of being there first... just the opposite, the ad ran for at least a month... guess no one wanted a pink guitar. I was bored and a bit curious so that's what led me to go check it out.
So, I know they're kinda a rare breed on this forum but any Superstrat fans out there? I know Spot is one.
Speaking of Spot - right before I moved here, Spot asked me to participate in a recording project he's doing called Covers from the Black Lagoon. It was my first time recording in a proper recording studio and I had a blast. I played rhythm guitar on a way cool Sky Cries Mary tune called Breathe In. Spot is in the final stages of the project at the mo but he put together a test run version & video on youtube and I got permission from him to share it all with ya. Todd who I featured in Wed's LR w/the L2000E is on bass, SPot's playing Marla, the Gilmour knockoff strat/ with SC-3 Pu's, and I'm playing Char. So you'll be hearing a G&L party...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMGYV39H ... 1A1F98083D
Killer tune & project and one I'm proud to be a part of.
Since I was doing physical stuff today I actually ate lunch - had a egg/ ham/cheese/tomato pie with tomato sauce... no such thing as ketchup round here - its tomato sauce. Washed it down with some Charlie's 100% no preservative lime-ade.
Aussie was first to get the question #1 of yesteday's doubleshot triva.... Yes, B & D and as he mentioned there's some debate bout who actually wrote the tune. I read in the book lots of artists were keen to record it but no label would touch it due to the line - And I can hardly wait to sleep with you again. Richard C changed the line to 'be with you again' and it became one of their biggest hits.
Aussie came close of getting the 2nd one too - Yes Michael Douglas in Falling Down.
Will get to today's trivia question later on...
Next up - Today's Swapmeet Score -
I've been wanting one of these since they came out but never could find a good deal one - til bout 2 months ago...
Image
I was rather stunned to see this turn up at the swapmeet and esp for $65! I got it w/ an aftermarket 9V adapter for $55 and it works great. THey're a great practise/recording tool and great for playing w/ yourself ;) as seen here -
This guy's off the hook...
Crazy -eh?
And... One from the road literally.... we have something here called Inorganic Collection where once or twice a year, folks can put whatever junk they'd normally take to dump and put it on the curb for the garbage trucks to haul away. Do they have something similar in your town? They used to do this years ago in Seattle til people starting complaining bout others rummaging thru their crap. Its fun tho to try to score deals this way esp with what some folks toss out. I met a guy @ the Midway swapmeet named Jerry Daniels who was a full on record collector and a walking encyclopedia of NW music info.
He scored a '68 Fender P-bass via curbside divin' that just had a small crack on the fingerboard up near the 12th fret... FUnny - he found the right case for it the following year in a different 'hood. HOw bizarre.
So a couple weeks ago, I was driving down road and spotted this -
Image
Its a late 80's Washburn D10N. Nuthin fancy but I like the neck profile and once fixed think it might make a good beach guitar. If not, I'll stick it on trademe. Sweet as either way. I'm gonna talk to the guy who did the neck repair on the Suzuki Classical and see if he's keen for another go...
Up Next -
Here's a vid of a tune that Spot & did last December in Seattle at a Benefit show. THe song was Hodgy's (the singer's) choice and we werent to excited at first to play it but it turned out to be heaps of fun and Hodgy did a superb job on vox (see original) Spot's rocking Marla on the right as well as providing half the song banter...
Here's the original vid -
As I mentioned I don't watch much tv but this is one show that I watch every week. Jackie got me into to it and our friend's think we're Nanas for watching it but we love it. Good acting & storylines. I believe Coro or Corrie is the longest running soap on television. Its shown nightly in the UK in 1/2 episodes. Its on here in 1 hr formats 2x week. Alot of times we watch it online if we're not home when it airs. THink what you may but imo its heaps better than most of the crap that's on network tv here or in the states.
So - any other Coro junkies out there??
Ok, its Trivia Time...
What famous rapper is a huge fan of Coronation Street having watched it for the past 12 years and has actually contacted the producers about appearing on the show?
1) Snoop Dogg
2) Ice T
3) Eminem
4) Sean 'Puff Daddy' Combs
Finally, I have put it out to 2 fellow GbL'rs bout doing the duties next week tho I havent heard back from either of them yet so if any of y'all want to take the reins, shoot me an email. REmember, you get a free pedal out of the deal...
So that about wraps it up... Thanks to everyone who participated this week - I really enjoyed reading your posts and I had a blast putting these LR's together. I hope to be able to reply to some of your responses over the weekend.
Have a great weekend - and I'll leave ya with a Rocking start to it...
Hey Kf
Superstrats: Yeah - I have a couple in my collection. I had a chance to buy a Climax locally a couple of years ago and passed it up partly 'cause the seller wanted $1,200 because "his guitar tech" told him it was a $4,000 guitar. The other thing was the colour - it was a transparent G&LDP green - just a bit to much for me. The climaxes had a few issues, but Gabe posted some relatively simple mods (changing caps and such) which apparently made a huge difference. I'm certtainly looking forward to the forthcoming reissue of the Superhawk.
You n Spot: More great clips and playing. The gig looked like a fun night. Breathe In is excellent both the audio and the clip. Is there anyway to keep updated on the Covers project - I think I'd probably like to hear the finished product.
The Loop Station: I always wanted to play around with a looper since the first time I saw one used live by Jaco pastorius back in 1979 (I think) to lay a foundation groove under his "Slang" solo. Still haven't tried one though and could never justify the cost of one rither to myself or my wife. At that price I'd probably have bought it though.
Bulk Rubbish: We have bulk rubbish collections about every 6 months. In a contrast to your Seattle experience here folks will often put out stuff they don't want that is too good to throw away but aint worth trying to sell knowing full well that someone will grab it. Last time around 17 yo son brought home a leather executive chair that had one dodgy castr wheel that we fixed in 5 minutes.
Coronation Street: Haven't seen that in years - but not really my cuppa. It certainly has been around for a long time - I remember it was essential viewing for my mother back in the '60s.
Yesterday's Trivia:
Aussie was first to get the question #1
Only by virtue of geography and timezoning me thinks.
Today's Trivia: No idea but if you made me guess I'd say Snoop since he seems to have turned up in a bunch of shows over the past year or so from talk shows to low grade cooking shows to reality/talent shows to B Grade dramas ...[/cynicaltone]
Been a great week. Thanks for your as usual unique contribution. Glad to see you're settling into the New Zealand lifestyle and let us know you're coming if you make it over to the West Island.
cheers, Robbie
Nice loop station dude, I have been eyeing the line q one for a while, haven't bought one yet though. I would love to be able to pick my own brain, for now I rely on a weekly jam with a friend of mine.
Super strats are very much me, I love tremolos a large deal. Wang it up a little as you go. On a recent stint I have been training myself to hit pitches 1.5 up or down with my floyd accurately. It is a little difficult at first in the timbre of the note becomes very weird due to changes in tension but it is pretty solid. The more ways you can get between two notes, the more options you have available to you for expression after all.
Great job on the LR this week. Great to hear your Seattle and New Zealand stories. I also bought a guitar from the Midway Swap Meet back in the '90s--my first Vintage Sunburst Ibanez GR-520 Ghostrider. Teriffic guitar that I got for $250. Perhaps not the greatest deal I've ever gotten, but it was WAAY under-priced for its value.
I have gotten SO many great deals over the years--the list is long indeed. Like I paid $175 for my Gibson ES-330, $150 each for my 1960 Strat and the 1969 Tele Thinline; $50 for a beautiful 1964 BF Fender Tremolux head and cab; $65 for a brand new Super Champ with the hang tags still on it; and I let a guy sleep on my sofa for a month for his vintage 1965 Deluxe Reverb...and those would be just for starters. A good score is always the sweetest.
I'm not much of a SuperStrat guy. Not into Floyds and the the bridge bucker thing--I'd rather have a stock, vintage strat any day. The Legacy Special, S-500 and Comanches are super for me, and about as super as I need to get.
Anyway, good job. Take care.
Hmm......saying it's two out of four multiple choice answers without naming which two wins? :crazy: Seems the guitar isn't all that's smoked over there.*
LOL. I understand Philby's point but the reason NZ doesn't have much of a military force is because they are pretty confident that no one is going to be interested in sailing all that way just for a couple of islands and 40 million sheep :evilgrin: Hah ... NZeds biggest threat is from its Island neighbours
kf - Nice wrap to a great week
+ 1 on Superstrats. Lately my thing has been wringing out the most I can from the neck pickup. Lots of nice tones hiding up there....
You can cover a lot of ground with one of these, and yes, it's the only geet I have a name for -
KF, really enjoyed your reports this week and just got to some of them after being out of town for a few days.
I was a great fan of the Carpenters and loved how they layered the tracks. I enjoyed some ABBA to but they were into disco which I could not get around. Missed a lot of the videos this week due to time and am also a superstrat fan of sorts. Great week-- Darwin
