~~~~~~~~ TUESDAY LUNCH REPORT ~~~~~~~~
Post by Katefan »
Gidday Folks! Welcome to Tuesday and another edition of the LR...
Thanks to everyone who replied and shared something yesterday. I really appreciate ya taking the time to do so. I'd wanted to respond to your replies tonight (I hope to later this week) but I have a full as day tomorrow - Jackie & I are co-teaching a Reflexology course all day @ a wellness college and then I have an audition for a band tomorrow night! Doesnt leave much time for composing a LR so I'm gonna try & pull double duty tonight...
I'll get to the teaser from Mon's report later but first I want to share a bit more bout NZ -(pronounced N' Zed)
NZ being a rather small country alot of folks don't know much bout it (hell, I didnt and I have a cousin who moved here ~20 years ago after meeting his partner in Portland OR. I do recall being blown away seeing the pics he sent us but I was in my early 20's then and pretty much occupied with other things like Women, Mazda Rx-7's and Pre-CBS Fenders...
Anyway, most Kiwi's get mistaken for Australians and/or Brits -mainly by American's (no offense to anyone) so its kinda a running joke here which is summed up nicely in the following clip....
Yep, there's also a bit of a long standing rivarly btw Kiwis & Aussies too which ya'll probably by now have suss'd...
*Note to Blarg & Aussie - I'm Switzerland ;) Just Sayin.
Moving on...
Here's a clip of a local kiwi musician, Lindon Puffin. I met Lindon last year at a local used/vintage guitar shop. We hit it off and he shared alot of stories bout the Finn Brothers and other NZ musos... he also gave me an unmastered copy of the album he was just finishing up and this is the opening track from it -
Turns out Lindon's girlfriend at the time was (and perhaps still) Victoria Girling-Butcher whose band Lucid 3 (now defunct) was the first NZ band Jackie hep'd me to. Apparently Victoria has just completed her solo album which sources say is Absolutely Fab so I'm looking forward to its release.
Here's a couple great tunes from Lucid 3's 2nd album - All Moments Leading to This
As I mentioned, the LOTR movies were filmed here in NZ and actor/film director, Peter Jackson, is definately a home town hero.
Avatar was also filmed here as well as Whale Rider which came out several years ago.
Next Up -
I had already planned on posting this but due to someone's very recent acquistion of a certain JJ, I thought it would be even more fitting to share it now. For those of you that don't know that's John Jorgensen, one of the first G&L players and endorsers along with our own Will Ray - and obviously both of the Hellecasters fame.
I found this ad in a copy of the short lived Guitar Shop Magazine that debut'd sometime in the mid 90's. Fab zine full of cool gear reviews and such... esp since the internet was still fairly new.... Anyway, most folks have seen this ad but here's what I found on the next page...
Image
How Cool is that? Wonder who won it??? Hopefully someone hep to the Coolness of Will Ray.
Anyway, thought ya'll would dig that.
Oh, speaking of the internet and Will Ray... many of you know that he wrote a column in GP bout scoring gear on Ebay called Ebay Strategies... I havent picked up a copy of GP in years... Is Will is still writing said column. ???
What cool deals have ya'll found? Share em if ya got em - and you know the rule - no pics = it doesnt exist...
Btw, Leidergeist's Sunburst SC-3 Ebay score is SWEET! Man, that thing looks gloriously vintage and gots the Leo Mojo full on as! Nicely done.
Ok, I mentioned Pawnshp Prizes yesterday... I've only been to a few shops since my arrival but a week ago I found one that was selling a pile of gig bags for $5 ea. Some were crap, some were trashed, and a couple were like new - didnt matter - every single one was $5. I pulled out the cleanest fender bag and handed over a fiver... so here's my lastest - which just sold -
Next -the answer to yesterday's trivia question -
Image
Might Joe Young was the original name of STP. They rec'd a letter from a attorney of the bluesman of the same name and out of respect they changed their name to Stone Temple Pilots.
2 of you got the answer to the bonus question - Fictitional Film maker of THis is SPinal Tap aka Meathead. Well done.
Here's 2 more vids - this is the best live version of a Beatles tune I've heard/seen - they simply nail it -
You can definately hear the Beatles influence + others on the band in the latter song -as well as what Dave said, a mark of a great band imo is one where you can hear their influences but they still retain their own style - not an easy task to pull off as it can be a fine line btw showing one's influences and just plain copying them.
What band's/artists are you fond of that you think fit this bill. 2 of mine are Matthew Sweet & early Radiohead... Yes, I know more 90's era... starting to see a trend here? :)
Trivia Question -
What artist along with John Lennon does Scott Weiland say he's influence by and whose vocal stylings he's studied?
Hint - you can hear one of said artist's most popular song from the early 70's in the music and singing of Lady Picture Show...
Alright, that's just bout it for today's LR...
As mentioned, re the teaser from yesterday - here's another clue for ya'll (I'm building up to something so perhaps I should I say... another brick in the wall)
Enjoy & pay particular attention to Gilmour's Strat... like its difficult -Ha!
Til Tomorrow!
Howdy Kf,
Woke up in the middle of the night and once more enjoyed the STP vids.
And here I am just thinking that Kiwi's were a fuzzy fruit ....
Katefan wrote:Oh, speaking of the internet and Will Ray... many of you know that he wrote a column in GP bout scoring gear on Ebay called Ebay Strategies... I havent picked up a copy of GP in years... Is Will is still writing said column. ???
Haven't seen it in years so I'd say no. And under Michael Molenda the mag is changing about every 2 years. Now the 'column' is written by Carl Verheyen on session work after Steve Lukather did it for a while.
Katefan wrote:What cool deals have ya'll found?
One of the most surprising models I found on the cheap is this 2004 ASAT HB. Great sounding guitar. One is on sale on daBay listed as a 25th Anniversary model, although the description then makes the correction.
Katefan wrote:What band's/artists are you fond of that you think fit this bill.
There are plenty of band influenced by the Beatles where it is pretty clear. Some of the work by Tears for Fears, especially Seeds of Love, and Crowded House come to mind. And the Black Crowes I have always seen as strongly influenced by the Stones.
Katefan wrote:What artist along with John Lennon does Scott Weiland say he's influence by and whose vocal stylings he's studied?
I would say a certain David Robert Jones who changed his last name to Bowie. Think is also shows in Scott's 'dress code' ;)
Keep the vids coming Jason. Some good music.
- Jos
Hey Kf
Great to see you back on the forum. How are you enjoying life in the future. Haven't heard from your old pal Spot here or on the other forum for quite a while either - are you still in contact with him?
Katefan wrote:there's also a bit of a long standing rivarly btw Kiwis & Aussies... *Note to Blarg & Aussie - I'm Switzerland ;) Just Sayin.
LOL You're cool ... I knew you before you chose sides and we can excuse you on the grounds that love can impair judgement LOL. But while there is a definite rivalry an Aussie will still stand shoulder to shoulder with a Kiwi brother/sister against the rest of the world any day of the week!
Katefan wrote:Anyway, most Kiwi's get mistaken for Australians
Its a little known fact ... and a bit of an irritation to many NZers ... that the Australian Constitution provides for New Zealand to be an Australian State:
The Commonwealth” shall mean the Commonwealth of Australia as established under this Act.
“The States” shall mean such of the colonies of New South Wales, New Zealand, Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia, including the northern territory of South Australia, as for the time being are parts of the Commonwealth, and such colonies or territories as may be admitted into or established by the Commonwealth as States; and each of such parts of the Commonwealth shall be called “a State”.
Lucid 3 are a great band ... I picked up a copy of All Moments Lead to This after hearing a couple of tracks on JJJ in the mid noughties.
Trivia Question - Scott Weiland's Influences. Hmm ... more than a touch of Bowie in there. I doubt that he would acknowledge it but I always thought there is just a touch of John Lydon in there as well.
Bands where you can hear their influences but they still retain their own style. Only one I can think of at this stage of the evening are Oasis who I always thought of as Beatles with attitude ... not that I'd say that out loud within reach of Noel.
cheers, Robbie
KF - I enjoyed the Flight of the Conchords clip. Funny!
As to that G&L giveaway - Ha! I forgot all about that. It wasn't my personal guitar, just a kind of reproduction of my Hellecasters stage guitar, before I had any kind of signature guitar with them back then. I don't know who won that, but they got a nice guitar!
As to my column Ebay Strategies in GP Mag - I had that column for probably 8 years. It changed over the years, depending on the ever-changing directions of the magazine. My last column for them was sometime last year. Like someone else said, they seem to change almost weekly down there. Some people like that I guess. I like a more stable, traditional format I suppose.
I've been writing a new column for Premier Guitar Magazine since last December called "Bottom Feeder". It's about cool cheap guitars I find on eBay, yard sales, flea markets etc. Kinda fun.
Keep up the great Lunch Reports.
KF, all the videos you posted are great; I watched them over my lunch hour. I really like lucid3, their songs are exactly the style of music that I enjoy. "Echos" reminded me of how much time I spent during the early 1980s listening to Muddle and Atom Heart Mother.
Other people have already pointed out several artists with distinct Beatles influence. Off hand I can only come up with one more: XTC.
I consider myself lucky to have run across my 1990 SC-3 on Craigslist a couple of years back. Just to prove I did not conjure up the story:
Keep up the great lunch reports, I'm having a great time checking them out.
KF, a lot of cool stuff today. I really like the WR and Hellcaster promos. Will , it would be neat if you would post some of your finds one day. That would be very interesting.
I am not a good trivia person as out of the business for so many tears and did not start again until 2000.
Maybe we can get this Aussie/Kiwi thing straightened out by the end of the week!!!! No doubt that you guys would stand up against us outsiders!
I have not scored any great stuff in garage sales as I usually don't stop at them. There is an occasional good find on CL and sometimes in stores.
Didn't listen to the tunes today as I have been up to no good and haven't had time. I made the mistake of stopping by American Guitar and Band for a half hour while waiting on an appointment near by. Ginny has warned me to stay out of harm way and I think she may be right. Good week KF-- Darwin
(I am happy to have read about the mishaps of timing out while the hosts are composing LR's. I lost my post then recovered it by back buttoning a number of times. :D )
Well I don't hear it in the Lady Picture Show video so this may not be the answer you are looking for but Weiland says Jim Morrison. About the only entity that I hear Jim Morrison in is Eddie Vedder.
I agree with the previous comments that there is a strong Beatles and Bowie color to that song at least. Personally hearing the song for the first time I did not like it at all. I see it as a borrowed sound that they are introducing to a fresh audience. STP is a band with a couple of songs that jumped out at me yet when I dug deeper into their oeuvre those songs turned out to be exceptions rather than typical examples of their style. I like Weiland's voice. Sometimes the band sounds like there is too much missing when playing live. IMO they would benefit from a second guitarist. The band is better than I expected hearing them play their own music. They warm up playing Zeppelin and I heard a few songs on the radio. They sounded great. I was surprised the guitarist was so good. It was not evident to me when he played STP music. The other video is also a good performance of Revolution.
I am new here as a G&L owner and forum member. After reading the LR Monday and today I am wondering whether you are a native to the US or elsewhere. If you lived in the US what motivated you to move all the way to NZ? Many people think about places they would like to live but actually relocating is a major task. Do you have family there other than the cousin? It is a beautiful place. Considering the work surrounding Peter Jackson, NZ is on the radar and can hold its own on a world class level in certain categories at least.
It will be interesting to see where your teasers lead. I have not seen enough to understand whether they are day to day or one arc culminating on Friday. I have no idea.
That $40 organ is sad. It did not sell. It reminded me of the organ my grandmother had. The history that is connected to used gear is something I had written about in response to yesterday's LR that I deleted because it was too much for anyone to be interested in reading. I don't buy gear from pawn shops, thrift shops, or Craigslist. I was against buying used equipment up until recently. I am now open to buying through ebay when something is no longer made that must be found as NOS or used in good shape "mint" but I have a list of requirements that must be met.
I don't have any music related items to show (yet) but I am using an Apple Cinema Display that is as good as new. I picked it up on ebay because the model is no longer made and I wanted a 2nd to match with the one I had. I found this and it met every requirement on my list including a great price, seller covers return shipping, honors full refunds, a warranty, mint condition, shipped in original box (very very important), etc. Now with music gear the list will be adjusted but there are restrictions I will not compromise. I would do without before loosening up on a few. I would rather not have it.
I posted this then proofread it again and an idea came to me. Your LR themes and teasers included pawn shops, a used organ for sale and you said to pay attention to Gilmour's guitar in the Echoes video. Does this have anything to do with the pedal steel guitar Gilmour picked up at a pawn shop in Seattle?
Hi Katefan,
It's been crazy at work so I haven't had time to respond to any of your LR's, but I'm really enjoying the contents so far.
10 Things I Like About New Zealand (in no particular order)
1. They have virtually no armed forces to speak of.
2. They have a no-nukes policy.
3. There are no snakes in NZ.
4. Everything is made of wood, even the freeways (at least in Wellington anyway). A cab driver told me it's to minimise damage in an earthquake.
5. Everybody calls each other bro or duckhid.
6. Awesome landscape.
7. Flight of the Conchords, Split Enz, Bic Runga and a whole host of other left field musical gems come from there.
8. There are some great boutique beers from NZ.
9. NZ airports are relaxed about security screening to the point of not really caring. It's much nicer that way. :D
10. Customs dudes at the airport say 'Welcome home Kiwi' when you flash an NZ passport on re-entry. In Australia customs dudes look at you like you ran over their cat.
Some things that worry me about NZ
1. They have virtually no armed forces to speak of. If a populous Asian 'neighbour' decided to land 100,000 troops, the whole country would be theirs in about 10 minutes. It would take Australian or US forces about 12 hours to arrive and it would be too late by then!
2. About 50% of the NZ population seems to be in Australia looking for work. There aint any! There's hardly enough for us natives! Stay home Kiwis!
