Greetings from the future (its Tues here) and from Land of the Long White Cloud or aka Land of Lord of the RIngs - Yep - we're talkin New Zealand.

I know there's a lot of new folks on here now so I'll give a brief introduction...
My name is Jason and I'm 44 years of age. Aside from being a musician and a fan of all things Leo I am a Board Certified Reflexologist. If you're not hep to Reflexology, I highly recommend checking it out and giving it a go as its Fab stuff!

I am orginally from Seattle, WA but also lived in San Diego, CA for 2.5 years. I moved here 6 mos ago (today to be exact) to start a new life with my partner, Jackie. SHe is a Certified Reflexologist as well and a Reiki Master. We met 2 years ago this month when she was in Seattle teaching a reflexology workshop and I was actually doing LR duties! Man, how time flies...

Anyway, this is my 5th time now as LR'r if I recall correctly, so I'm not new to this board but I don't frequent it as much these days - one reason being is we have limited internet usage and this site eats up heaps - the other is I spend more time playing & making music now. Still, I like to log in from time to time to see what's new. I have to say the new site looks great and it seems like alot of the bugs have been worked out plus there's a lot of new blood. All very cOol. THis past month I've been doing a housesit so I've been taking advantage of having unlimited internet and catching up on music vids & reading gear reviews. Gear over here is damn expensive and I'm in the process of building back up my arsenal so been checking out gearsites & viewing youtube vids. I plan to share some of what I've stumbled upon hope to provide a fun week's worth of porn, music vids, plus trivia and try to tie it all together. So to quote Marty Dibergi - Enough of my yak'n...


LUnch for me is the smallest meal of the day if I eat it at all so that's why in the past I havent reported them. Today tho, I'll be seeing a client + doing some work of a farm (lots of em here) so my lunch will consist of some leftover salmon from the night before that Jackie fixed w/ soy sauce, miso, sesame seeds and garlic - Yummy stuff! - on top of some organic brown rice. Probably will have a cuppa of earl grey at some point as well as some fruit. Exciting stuff - eh?

Here's is my main guitar, Char, and at the (mo)ment my only electric... I got her back in August of 2003 for $10 at the now defunct Midway Swapmeet bout 20 miles south of downtown Seattle. She had nearly perished in a fire and looked pretty much unplayable with the p/g melted up into the strings. The seller thought she was basically worthless hence the low price. Needless to say I was stoked (hehe) to get her esp since 2 weeks before I had sold all my guitars Including a very cool sounding (orig pu's) mustang body SC-2 I had put together to finance a move. Anyway, I took her home, cleaned her up and plugged her in. TOok her to my first singing & playing gig the following weekend and later replaced her original melted p/g with the one pictured which I bought from a member of this board for $5. I also had my guitar tech, Mike Lull, clean her up and install a bone nut. My friend, Mean Joe Page, dubbed her Char and it stuck. Many folks have seen her before so I took some new pics yesterday...






I recently swapped out her stock MFDs with some Custom made alnico ones and that's what you see in the pics...

I got bit by the gear bug back in '91 not long after discovering that particular swapmeet. That led to me getting back into playing guitar which I had stopped for a few years... and subsequently unearthing and procuring heaps of guitars, amps, f/x pedals via classified ads, Pawnshops, Thriftstores (called opshops here - short for opportunity shops), swapmeets and occasionaly used/vintage music stores.
Finding & scoring gear cheap was always a rush and that brings me to the next bit...



THis column in Guitar Player Magazine started circa '93 and became an instant hit. Each month Mr. Art Thompson would feature some really cool stuff - usually overlooked and not well known.

So what's the tie in with G&L? THe debut column featured....

A broadcaster and a hardtail F-100 to be exact...

So, what I propose is that every day this week folks share a piece of gear that they scored on the cheap in the past - AND (esp if you havent done so) take some time out of your busy day and go into a local pawnshop and see what you can find.... JUst like the lottery - you can't (score)win if you don't (go)play.... Use your lunch hour if you have to - you may thank me later.... Seriously.
A lot of folks think now that shops can look things up on the web, that's there's no more good deals. Nope, most pawnshops don't bother spending alot of time with checking things - they just want to sell stuff & get it out the door fast. Besides, for most pawnshops, music gear is just a small bit of what they inventory. And even tho it sounds absurd to us, guitars look all the same to folks that don't play...
I know a guy who repeatably would get 80's AM STD Fender strats at Mexi strat prices b/c the shops wouldnt take the time to spot the diff! You also have to remember, shops loan/pay out at best .25 on the dollar for what they're acquire so they're way ahead of the game even if they let things go cheap.

Having said all that, as far as sharing stories, I'll widen the scope to include finds from opshops, flea markets, gifts from friends & family and items found in dumpsters or on the side of the road. But really, I encourage ya'll to at least one day this week hit up a pawnshop and report back what you find. C'mon, DO IT.

I just fin'd reading NOT DEAD & NOT FOR SALE - Scott Weiland's recent book on his life & times... good read. STP are one of my fave bands and I am quite pleased that they reformed (Velvet Revolver wasnt my thang) and that Mr. Weiland is still with us.... Like him or loathe him, the man's got talent and has been quite successful in the music biz.

Probably the best find I have had was the local Tip shop. (Dictionary definition to make sure everyone is on the right page - Tip - a mound or mass of refuse or rubbish). Where we go to dump our big loads of rubbish has a shop you can drop off stuff that is sort of good (Some stuff is still like new)

OK to the point, what did we get-
2pole speakon leads (4 wire) about 60m all up in 3 different leads
2 4 channel mixer (Nothing flash, just a volume control to 1 output)
a couple of mic leads
Various different theater lighting
and some other stuff - Can't remember the whole list, too long ago

We had a quick calculation of street value worth at about $1100. They charged us $10, yes ten dollars. We mainly wanted the speakon leads as ours were just power cords and this would neaten the system.

That was the steal of the century for me

While I haven't gotten anything cheap like that, I have WON 2 guitars on another forum, a one off tele and an Eastman AC508 acoustic. Sometimes it pays to be in small raffles, vs larger lotteries.

You are my hero, I spent 6 weeks in NZ in 2005, including a week staying in Auckland down by the harbor and 5 weeks traveling both islands. Didn't get that far north, next time. I want to move there soooo bad, I just loved it. Due to family circumstances etc, we didn't do it, but I really wanted to go there, either north or in the coramandel.

Congrats to you for doing it!!!!!!

By the way, go once a month for a massage and have done reflexology, great stuff!

I have seen the pictures of Char before but not in the detail that you posted today. What a find and the price was nothing. Do you gig this? It certainly has to be a conversation piece if you do. Can you still smell the burnt oder. Boy, it is cool.

I will listen to the videos this evening when I have more time to download them.

I have really found some deals over the years and pawn shop can be a good source. I have found the local GC to have some rare finds over the years as the young dudes working there have no idea what they are selling. That is where I found my 88 Tanqueray Strat and a pristine 88 Strat Plus. They didn't have any idea on dating a Fender and they are focused on selling the less than $500 guitars. Our gain.

I have extremely limited pedal knowledge. I only have a couple and the one that use all the time is a BBE Sonic Stomp. Good to see the early LR- Thanks. -- Darwin

I remember Char very well. One thing I had not noticed before though is how good a shape the fretboard is; that is pretty amazing considering what the poor thing must have been through. Did you have a refret done, because the frets in the picture appears to be really wide?

I do not frequent pawn shops, but I do scour Craigslist often. One of my best bargains is this L-2000 that I got a few years ago for less than what a used Tribute L-2000 would cost. And it has scraped body binding and the original hardcase. The bass is almost pristine, but the case is somewhat banged up.



STP has some great music. The hobby band that I was playing in did a couple their songs including "Interstate Love Song."

New Zealand is one of those places I hope to visit before I die.

I hate to be that guy, but I hate pawn shops and I am ideologically opposed to them. Kind of like how some guys wont buy Chinese made instruments because of work conditions, I wont buy anything from a pawn shop. No need to go into detail here, I'm sure you know my angle.

I had reflexology once, it was great. It was the only time I've ever got a massage and still is. I'll have to get another one some day.

Char sure is a cool (pun intended) guitar. With a story. He's a real survivor. Does it still smell like burning?

NZ are playing some mighty fine rugby at the moment. They're looking good for a world cup win if they don't choke in the semi's as usual!

Great start to the week! I must admit that New Zealand has beckoned me from over the horizon for quite a while now.

My best find was at a yard sale in a small Maine town where I used to live. I had to haul some stuff to the town garbage dump, which was only open for drop-offs early on Saturday mornings. On the way home I stopped by a yard sale which was about to begin. Just as I got out of the car, the homeowner was dragging a Fender Reverb out for the sale. It was one of the transitional models from '68-69' with silverface cosmetics on a blackface circuit, and it was 100% original. I couldn't believe it when he only asked $200 for it. I asked about the amp's history and condition; he said he had bought it in college many years before and really loved it, but his wife told him it was time to grow up and he needed to get rid of it that morning. Right on cue, she came outside and started yelling at him that he had better be selling it so he could start growing up (I would put his age around 40). I felt kind of guilty only paying $200 for it, but definitely deserved a better home. I'm sure the guy ended up regretting that he ditched teh amp and kept the wife...

I second Darwin on the deals to be had at Guitar Center if you're patient enough. I just got home from picking up a John Jorgenson Signature ASAT at my local GC, which was also autographed on the back by JJ. It wasn't in the same territory as a $200 Super Reverb, but I think it worked out pretty nicely going in on a dead slow Monday near closing time. I heard that somebody was looking at it very seriously this afternoon; if it was Ed, Bill or anybody else off this board let me know and I'll shed a few crocodile tears.

Time to bond with my new guitar!

It took some heavy rationalization and the promise of a new couch to get my wife's consent. I played it a couple of times in the store over the past two weeks and wasn't immediately won over, but tonight I plugged it in and that's all it took. Usually I make the love/leave decision on the basis of playing unplugged, and then plug it in just to confirm the electronics work. I'm glad I didn't rule this one out right away.

Now I need to track down some CDs JJ played on. I hate to admit this, but I don't think I've ever heard his work. any suggestions on a starting point would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, they did have a very sweet 30th Anniversary Legacy hanging right next to the ASAT. If I didn't have an absolute preference for tinted necks, I could have been swayed toward the Legacy instead. I didn't plug it in, but the acoustic feel was great.

Get the first two Hellecasters and the Essential Listening, Vol. 1 CDs. The third CD, "New Axes To Grind"
is great too, but no G&L guitars were played by John and Will on that CD. You can get these CD's and more
on the Hellecasters website. If you are country (rock) fan, check out the Desert Rose Band, too.

Also, check out youTube and you should find a bunch of videos to be amazed by. Will, John, and Jerry are jaw-dropping
amazing guitarists. And yes, Will (aka helle-man) is a member here on the G&LDP.

prolly the best finds were at yard sales. some old RCA ribbon mics, a Ross compressor, a beat to hell Martin Uke, and some cheapie amps that are long gone. the best lucky find was a Gibson tenor banjo that my friends neighbor put out with the trash. though it pains me that even after i told him what it was he still thought it was just old junk. i can only imagine how many cool things from back in the day were tossed out as junk. and then comes along another "gem from under the bed" and you wonder what's still out there?

My sister cleared out my father's house when he passed away. I found out about the clean out just in time to have her retrieve our grandfather's Bacon tenor banjo from the curb. To this day she can't understand why I would want "that beat up old junk".

I don't play tenor banjo, but just holding it and knowing he played it in New York City speakeasies during Prohibition is enough for me. It makes me wonder what my children (and hopefully grandchildren) will think of my G&L collection one day - Heirlooms? Scary evidence of congenital OCD? A down payment on something? Yard sale fodder (in which case I would posthumously disown them)?

Time to put the JJ down and get some sleep...

Greetings from your old stomping grounds. Although I have been to pawnshops a lot, I never bought anything. The closest I got was a early seventies Princeton amp but it was advertised as including a foot switch. When that thing turned out to be AWOL, they didn't want to take any of the price. Still don;t know whether I was the winner or loser in that deal.

And thanks for bringing one of my fave bands to everybody's attention. Ever since I heard 'Interstate Love Song' while still living in Sicily listening to Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown on the American Forces Network (AFN), I have always loved STP. Best 'non-Seattle' grunge band out there and handily beating many of the locals of that era IMHO.

Bonus Question - Who is Marty Dibergi?

Marti of course is the documentarian of Spinal Taps ignominious 1984 American Tour. (Played by Rob 'meathead' Reiner).

I suppose anything I picked up in the late 70's-early 80's would be considered a bargain in todays market, too bad i traded away a lot of cool stuff.
Probably my most recent bargain find was a sweet '91 SC-3 on the bay a couple years back... $500 with a new TKL case and shipping included...

Wow, what a find! Nicely done. My gf corrected me - inorganic collection is every 2 years here... but its coming soon to the hood near the farm that I visit so will be fun to scope it out.

Thanks. Cool you've been here...yeah its Fab - eh? I havent ventured to the south island yet but will at some point tho we have a friend who has a batch (summer house) in the coramandel so we stay there quiet a bit. We also have friend's up north @ Baylys Beach and its Lovely up there. SOme full on strong current tho... Both definitely worth seeing.

I'm on the fence whether to choose the sonic stomp or the the green screamer... I've had the latter and wasnt too impressed sound wise. If I were to get another, I'd swapped out the op amps. Don't get me wrong, nice pedal but seemed to be missing the midrange factor that I dig on some tubescreamers... btw, I've had quite a few over the years and they ALL sounded different....

The glue on bicut seam as well as the fingerboard started to melt due to the heat so the bicut started to separate and the rosewood f/b shifted a bit... but yeah, it could've been much worse... Nah, those are stock probably just the lighting in the photo.

Strangley, I'm noticing overall the finish lightening over time- esp on the headstock. Can see the logo (what's left of it) much easier now - nearly illegible a few years ago.

Def some cool finds... How true.... had a friend in Seattle who had a hauling biz and he'd bring home all sorts of stuff that he 'saved' from its final resting place. Lots of amps... most just having minor things wrong with em...

The clerk brought it out from the back as it was just coming out onto the floor and hadn't been priced yet... Upon seeing it, I nonchalantly asked - how much for this - and her reply was 'Oh, that OLD thing - how's $25 sound? GOt it for that out the door and turned it the next day at a guitar show for a nice profit

Greetings from your old stomping grounds. Although I have been to pawnshops a lot, I never bought anything. The closest I got was a early seventies Princeton amp but it was advertised as including a foot switch. When that thing turned out to be AWOL, they didn't want to take any of the price. Still don;t know whether I was the winner or loser in that deal.Hey Jos -Yeah, they can be a bit dodgy in their dealings but most of the time (most of) they're straight up.

And thanks for bringing one of my fave bands to everybody's attention. Ever since I heard 'Interstate Love Song' while still living in Sicily listening to Casey Kasem Top 40 countdown on the American Forces Network (AFN), I have always loved STP. Best 'non-Seattle' grunge band out there and handily beating many of the locals of that era IMHO.Cheers -Very COol - yep, not a lot of folks realise this but chart/album sales-wise, they were the biggest band of the early 90's - not Pearl Jam, not Nirvana, and not U2...

I suppose anything I picked up in the late 70's-early 80's would be considered a bargain in todays market, too bad i traded away a lot of cool stuff.I hear ya - been there done that - ALOT.
Probably my most recent bargain find was a sweet '91 SC-3 on the bay a couple years back... $500 with a new TKL case and shipping included...

Man, that's Nice! Looks very PRE-CBSish to my eyes. SCORE!

Not really looking for a G&L myself, but I am a pedal guy. I can't afford to do the pawn shop thing it will cause me to be murderred in a domestic dispute

Pawnshops are great for scoring deals on pedals but yes - best to tread carefully re the spouse/domestic bliss factor...
